I'm surprised there isn't a thread for this. This was the seventh single off her Rhythm Nation album. It hit #1 in 1991 and made Janet at the time the only artist to get a #1 single in 3 separate calendar years from the same album.
I really enjoy this, it's an infectious song.

I'm just going to say it: one of the very best songs (and videos) of the 1990's (even though it's really from 1989). A terrific vocal performance which leverages her (rarely heard) lower register.

Behind "Black Cat" this is my second favorite single from RN. It's perfect - visually, lyrically, melodically, vocally. It makes me wanna fall in love again soon so that I can feel the song's blissful vibe the way it's supposed to be felt.
Janet at her absolute best.

This might be my favorite single from her. The "won't do, won't do, just will not do" parts towards the end are so well arranged.

My personal favorite version of the song and my favorite part is the ad libs she does (later accompanied by layered vocals) after the "won't do, won't do, just will not do".

Yeah the album version was the one I was referring to and that's my favorite part as well. It's well sung of course, but the way it's put into the track and synced with the rest of the production is what has always really made it pop out for me.

I remember at the time I was SO exhausted by this album from overplaying it and by the time this single came out I was completely over it. It was always an automatic station changer.
Thankfully, I've had over twenty years to get over it. It's just a great pop song, I love that beefy/chunky production that JJ and Terry were doing (and LA Reid and Babyface as well) at the time. And she looks so GORGEOUS in the video.

Awesome song. Love both the color and black and white videos, she looks so beautiful in them, love some Janet!
I also love the trumpet solo on this, Herb Alpert did a great job on it. Love when she say "what do you want, if you believe in love sang." Always gives me a giggle, but in a good way.

My favorite song from her! I'm curious, does anyone know if it was always planned that this would be the last single? I just can't imagine a scenario where this wasn't released. I didn't own the album at the time and didn't know the song until it was released, but I get anxious just thinking about this being passed over for single #2, 3, 4, 5, AND 6!

Growing up, I was a huge Janet Jackson fan. Nearly anything she put out between 1986 and 1998 could do no wrong. So many strong tracks from the "Rhythm Nation" album with "Love Will Never Do" being one of my favorites. Not sure which of her tracks I liked better: this one, "Escapade" or "Miss You Music" (among the dance-pop leaning-singles as "Rhythm Nation" and "Alright" are more on the R&B/New Jack Swing tip). Tune got heavy airplay on B96, WGCI (which played the the more urban-friendly UK Funky 7' version instead), and on the Hot AC/Adult Top 40 stations (100.3 and 101.9 the Mix) in my market.

a literally perfect song, 6 minutes long and none of those minutes are wasted. I could go on forever about this f**king song. the radio edit ruins it, its still a banger but when that final chorus only plays once instead of three times at the end, my kidneys fail a little. what a delicious, euphoric, beautifully sung chorus. Opening 30 seconds are among the best in her discography, although her best opening seconds will always be between all for you & rhythm nation.
