This week starts a new chart year. What are some of your observations from the past year? What are some of your predictions for the upcoming year?

I'm going to say this, and I actually think it will happen. Shania releases her long awaited 5th album. According to her want to have the album drop before she turns 51 (August 28, 2016) and the studio evidence - I'd say it's actually close to completion. I'd say the single gets released sometime in April and we have the album sometime in August.

These were last year's, so I'll sum up how I did.
-Blake will continue to put up #1 songs with middle of the road to mediocre quality singles, after "Lonely Tonight" peaks at #1. I say 2 additional hits this year. --True, not exactly sure how many hits he had, but true none the less. -Luke Bryan's domination continues, he will release three #1 singles, that will follow the same pattern as the Crash My Party era. At least one of the singles will be universally panned by most everyone, a la, TMKON. His new album will come out between August and September and sell north of 400,000 copies. Entertainer of the Years should be in his future. --Almost 100% true, album didn't sell over 400K, but close. And maybe not a universally panned single but not very well liked either. -FGL fail with "Sun Daze" as the time of year is bad for this kind of single and the incredible levels of suck that this song achieves, however radio will quickly forgive them and they will be tops again with the next single. --Unfortunately SD didn't fail, that was more wishful thinking, I guess. -Bro-country starts fading a little more and while not totally traditional country music will take hold a style similar to the early 2000s comes back. --I'd say things are swinging this way. -Miranda will consistently reach the top ten, but only reach #1 with one single from Platinum, probably "Another Sunday in the South". She will continue her streak of FVOTY awards. --The only true part is the end, that's the part I didn't want. -Maddie & Tae, make waves at the award shows by getting New Artist and Vocal Duo nominations, as well as a Single of the Year nomination for "Girl In A Country Song". They will, unfortunately fizzle out by only reaching the top 20 with the next single and then outside the top 40 after that. --Thankfully, there's some staying power here. That makes me happy. The nominations were generally right. -Garth Brooks doesn't make the impact a lot believe he will. His tour will be huge but that's about it. His album should make Gold, but Platinum will be unlikely. His songs perform even more dismally. He may receive EOTY nominations, but won't win. --I don't know if the album went platinum, I don't believe it did, but spot on. -Carrie will hit #1 with SITW and "Little Toy Guns" by the late summer. Her debut single from her fifth studio album will be released and rocket to #1 and sell like crazy. Her fifth studio album will be released between October and November and will open with around 300,000 copies, and a #1 debut on country and the 200 chart. She may get her first CMA EOTY nomination, but won't win. Maybe 2016 will be her year. --Okay, SITW and LTG, right on different charts. SB did rocket up the charts, at first. Didn't sell like crazy though. Album in October, not 300,000,but the sales climate crashed hard even from last year. Unfortunately, no EOTY. -Tim McGraw will continue with his mediocre music, but the success starts to fade with it. He will probably release another album in 2015. --Of course another album, some decent songs though, not TOTW. -Reba will release her new album in June to coincide with her Vegas show. The first single will be amazing, may make the top 20, but subsequent releases, unfortunately, struggle. The album will open with around 50,000-70,000 copies and between #1 and #5 on the country chart. She does receive FVOTY nominations. --April release, no FVOTY, not top twenty, but not too bad. -Overall women will still struggle, but a few more than this year will reach the top 20. --Yes, I think?
Predictions later.

Let's check out my 2015 predictions: "Perfect Storm" went #1, but "Crushin' It" peaked at #9. We'll see about "Country Nation". "Homegrown" and "Loving You Easy" both went #1. "Beautiful Drug" hasn't done too well at country and I doubt it sees much success on other formats, but we'll see. Nope. Little Big Town won. I wasn't expecting the "Girl Crush" success. "Talladega" went #1. I correctly predicted the release of "Like A Wrecking Ball", but it only peaked at #11. So close. No, no, and no. Although Pageant Material was still very successful. "What We Ain't Got" peaked at #14. "Real Life" was closer to "Barefoot Blue Jean Night" than "What We Ain't Got" was, but they're not really that similar. Bingo. "Blue Bandana" peaked at #32 and was more traditional than his High Noon singles. "Baby Be My Love Song" peaked at #3 and his album came out. So no and no. No. "Fly" peaked at #8. No. "Jim And Jack And Hank" peaked at #50. Yikes. "Better Than You Left Me" sadly peaked at #34. "Lonely Tonight" went #1 but is only Gold. He did not release "Buzzin'". "Sangria" became the album's biggest hit, and it seems like "Gonna" will extend his #1 streak. We'll see about "We Went". "Lonely Eyes" peaked at #2, but he chose to end the A.M. era and release the huge #1 "I'm Comin' Over"."Say You Do" became a big #1 hit. We'll see where "Riser" ends up. Nothing. But I'm hoping for a big 2016 from Charlie. Fingers crossed. I don't know much about it's awards. Did it get any nominations? "She Don't Love You" sadly peaked at #14. I don't think it got any nominations. Pretty much correct. Both "Take Your Time" and "House Party" went #1. "Take Your Time" peaked at #12 at Hot AC but only #27 at Pop. Bingo. "Til It's Gone", "Wild Child", and "Save It For A Rainy Day" all went #1. I'll give it to me. "I See You" and "Strip It Down" both spent two weeks atop the Billboard Airplay chart. "Kick The Dust Up" spent one week atop the Airplay chart, but it spent two atop the mongrel chart. "Something In The Water" topped the mongrel chart at least (peaked at #3 on Billboard Airplay). "Smoke Break" did not go #1, and I somehow didn't anticipate the "Little Toy Guns" release. Yes and no. "Just Gettin' Started" went #1, but he decided to release "Tonight Looks Good On You" and "Gonna Know We Were Here". Correct. Not sure when "Hard To Be Cool" peaked, but it peaked at #22. "Freaks Like Me" might take off, but I'm not betting on it. Just no. This whole era was a mess. "I'm To Blame" was more radio-friendly but didn't go Top-10. It did get his great album out though. Yes. "Ain't Worth The Whiskey" and "Let Me See Ya Girl" (MB only, I believe) both hit #1. Wrong. "Hell Of A Night" was a lot bigger than I expected. Man Against Machine went Platinum, but it had no radio success. "Drinking Class" peaked at #2 (not sure about MB) and "That Don't Sound Like You" definitely won't hit #1. Dead wrong. Although it hasn't seemed to help their momentum as "Pain Killer" has struggled. I don't even know what the basis was for this prediction.Never released. "Homegrown Honey" went #1, but "Southern Styler" bombed peaking at #33. I don't know about this. Mickey Guyton: No. A Thousand Horses: "Smoke" was a pretty big #1 hit, but "Drunk Dial" has really struggled. Not breakout stars in my book. Will Hoge: Well this was the hopeless optimist in me speaking.

2016 Predictions:
1. Kip Moore gets two big hits in "Running For You", and "Girl Of The Summer", and also an Album of the Year nomination at one of the awards shows for Wild Ones.
2. Blake Shelton releases a tremendous lead single, something that would remind us of his old music.
3. Sugarland and Montgomery Gentry both call it quits.
4. Gary Allan hits top 20 with "Mess Me Up"
5. Brett Eldredge gets two chart-toppers: "Drunk on Your Love" and "Wanna Be That Song"
6. Billy Currington spends lots of the year climbing and eventually hitting top 10 with "It Don't Hurt Like It Used To"
7. Carrie Underwood comes up with 2 huge number ones: Heartbeat and Choctaw County Affair.
8. Chris Stapleton peaks right inside the top 10 with Nobody To Blame, but gets a #1 with Tennesee Whiskey afterwards.
9. Chris Young hits #1 with Think of You and Sober Saturday Night.
10. Miranda spends lots of 2016 writing and comes out with a kick ass lead single near summer time.
11. Eric Church has a huge year. Mr. Misunderstood, Record Year both hit #1 and BOTH will garner song/single of the year nominations, along with an album of the year nomination for the album. He also wins EOTY at the CMAs.
12. FGL scrapes the top 10 with Confession and releases their best song yet as the lead single for the upcoming album in Spring.
13. Lee Brice releases an extremely different sounding lead single mid year and it flops.
14. Luke hits #1 with Home Alone Tonight, Move, and Razor Blade.
15. Jon Pardi and Joe Nichols miss the top 20 on their lead singles but both release killer traditional albums that will get great reviews.
16. Brantley Gilbert hits #1 with Stone Cold Sober, takes time off, releases a bro-country lead single that ends up being huge.
17. Thomas Rhett will have the biggest country summer song in T-Shirt and it will skyrocket to the top of the chart.
18. Jake Owen releases something that sounds like Jake Owen in the spring and it hits top 10.
19. Brothers Osborne come out with a tremendous album, and hit #1 with the current single and the follow up.
20. Randy Housers new album will end up including a cover of "Stay with Me" by Sam Smith and it will drop jaws.

2016 Predictions: 10. I'm not really any good with posting yearly predictions, but these two I agree with for sure. There's going to be a lot of buzz and anticipation for new music from Miranda in 2016 and I'm thinking we'll probably get a new song sometime around the next ACM's in April. Eric should also have a great year and finally pick up some of the big awards at the CMAs's (strong contender for Album, likely Male Vocalist of the Year and leader for Entertainer of the Year). I'm expecting "Record Year" to be a huge hit (I'd say it'll be the next single); "Round Here Buzz" will also another be huge hit for him. And although "Mixed Drinks About Feelings" has received mixed reviews here on Pulse, I think it would be well received at radio and another big hit. My early 2016 CMA Predictions: Entertainer - Luke, Kenny, Eric, Miranda, Carrie Male Vocalist - Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Blake Shelton, Keith Urban, Chris Young Female Vocalist - Kelsea Ballerini, Cam, Brandy Clark, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood Album - "Kill the Lights," "Mr. Misunderstood," "Storyteller," "Ripcord," "I'm Comin' Over" (possibles include "Wild Ones" and Blake's album) Single/Song: "Burning House," "Die A Happy Man," "John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16," "Record Year," "Riser" A few artists to watch out for in 2016: Sturgill Simpson - It's been almost two years since Metamodern was released and just over a year since he signed with Atlantic records, so I'm sure we'll see new music from him sometime in Q2 or early Q3 of 2016. He and his band have been touring non-stop for well over two years building up his fan base, so any new music from him should sell very well. I'll say he'll debut at #1 with his new album and any new single release should receive some good buzz (especially after the success Chris Stapleton received in 2015). Speaking of Chris and Sturgill, how great would it be to see both of them hit the road together touring the country? That would be a hell of a show. Cam - She'll likely receive quite a few Single/Song nominations for "Burning House," and should easily earn a nomination for Female Vocalist of the Year at the CMA's. Chris Janson - His debut album is pretty solid and I'm hoping to see further success come his way in 2016. Granger Smith - I don't particularly like his music, but he has the looks, name and sound that likely appeals to what country radio is aiming for. "Backroad Song" will be a #1 for him.

I'll do a few here:
1. Will Carrie Underwood EVER top the airplay chart again? It's been three years since Blown Away and she's peaked at #2 four times and #3 once (Something In The Water which topped the Hot Country Songs chart for seven weeks).
2. I don't like the 'new normal'. 2015 is the second consecutive year of George Strait NOT landing a top ten. His prospects for breaking Eddy Arnold's mark of 92 top tens grows dimmer by the passing years.
3. If the r&b trend continues in country music and if done right, expect some great sounding music in 2016.

2016 Predictions
Maren Morris will be the Breakout Artist of the year
Carrie Underwood will have the worst Album era of her career in terms of sales and hits. She will do fine on radio but could end up with no platinum sales for the Album or any of the singles.
Miranda will struggle to get a radio hit in 2016.
Hootie and The Blowfish reunite with new tour and Album to be released in Country Genre.

Ok, giving predictions a shot.
-Overall, bro-country fades away even more. R&B infused and traditionally based country make more headway. Women make some gains as well, specifically new women. It will be better this year.
-Luke dominates again. I hold this prediction over again. He doesn't seem to be losing steam. ACM EOTY should be his to lose. I'll say three #1 hits, HAT, "To the Moon and Back" and "Razor Blade". Hopefully not "Move".
-Blake continues his #1 streak, though imo it should end with "Gonna", awful, but I digress. We'll get a lead single from a new album sometime this year. His material will go one of two ways, he'll have meaningful music from his divorce, or he goes harder on the party side, hopefully the former. Him and Gwen are done by June.
-Jason Aldean fades as bro and rock tinged country goes out of style, but he still gets to the top ten, albeit with very forgettable material. A lead single comes in the summer with an album to follow in October, sales will be around 100,000-150,000 for the opening week.
-FGL, in a desperate attempt to stay relevant inch away from their trademark crap and release a decent R&B style lead single. It will do well, but overall the album will fallback on what they do best, making awful music. Vocal Duo awards will still go to them.
-Miranda will be back with an album in the summer to early fall. She'll score with the lead single, it will make top 5. The material will rely heavily on her divorce, but it will be incredible. Subsequent singles won't fare as well as the lead, but not a poorly as Platinum era singles. She keeps FVOTY, even though her year won't be the biggest.
-Thomas Rhett breaks bigger as is type of music is in. Can't say singles, didn't listen to the album, but he'll be comfortable near the top.
-Sam Hunt's music is still appealing to a lot people, not this guy though. Follows the same formula he's had. He'll have a new album in the Summer.
-Carrie will have a massive year. Her album may not be her best seller, but today's world, who's is? It will go Gold in the Winter and Platinum by year's end. She gets a Mediabase #1 with HB, and follows it with "Dirty Laundry" and gets Billboard and Mediabase #1. "Church Bells" will follow, and reach the top, and if we finally get another fifth single they go with the granddaddy of the album "Choctaw County Affair", it's successful for sure. This is an era of incredible videos, but unfortunately awards at the country shows will be hard to come by. I've given up on EOTY, she won't get it or a nomination, but if there is ever a year, this is it. I don't think AOTY noms will come, and Grammys to be awarded in 2017.
-I think either Alan Jackson or Brooks and Dunn are inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
I'll post more if I think of them.

^Since there is an online petition to get Hank Williams, Jr. in the Hall of Fame, I wouldn't mind seeing him and Alan Jackson get in together. They can duet on The Blues Man.

Oh, I forgot to mention Chris Stapleton! You're avatar reminded me buffalocountry.
-Chris Stapleton will continue to make a name for himself, Traveller will sell well, but radio will, tragically, remain stupid and not play him like he deserves to be. He lands a spot as a tour opener on a major tour, furthering his name. Maybe even a new lead single by year's end, maybe.

However, I think Nobody To Blame will make a decent dent on the chart (maybe top 20). My fear is that when we get to January after the holidays, Traveller's sales will die down. Hopefully, Chris Stapleton will get performance slots on the Grammys and A.C.M.s.

Here's to hoping.

2016 predictions
SERIOUS
* "Mr. Misunderstood" goes to #1, showing Eric Church's knack for nostalgic storytellling
* Blake Shelton's streak finally ends with a song that stalls out in the #11-#15 range
* Cam has a huge crossover and multi-week #1 with "Burning House"
* Chris Stapleton will break out in a massive way
* More R&B country finally pushes bro-country out almost entirely
* "Confession" blows up the charts and inspires FGL to make more substantial music on their third album; some "bro" still sneaks through anyway
* Michael Ray and Canaan Smith, having had the blandest and most underwhelming #1 hits of 2015, will be toast by their third singles
* Zac Brown Band have their obligatory summertime smash with "Castaway", followed by a dark-horse hit with "Dress Blues"
* Saving Country Music continues to label the output of every male artist in Nashville as "bro"
* Dan + Shay finally release something else that I like
* Some low level alt-country/Americana/bluegrass act I've never heard of will win a Grammy
NOT SO SERIOUS
* RaeLynn finally has all the helium removed from her system, and is revealed to actually have a raspy, Bonnie Tyler-esque voice
* Richard Sterban of The Oak Ridge Boys accidentally goes too low on an "oom papa mow mow" at a concert in Nashville; the aftershock is felt as far away as Michigan
* Chase Rice unleashes a vulgar, profane rant on Twitter that takes up 125 tweets, calling program directors who didn't play his song enough brain-dead zombies who wouldn't know good music if it bit them on the ass, also threatening to do unspeakable things to their mothers and firstborn
* Luke Bryan's new song, "Drinkin' Beer with My Baby in a Truck", featuring a guest verse from Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, gets an inflated Clear Channel debut at #7; people realize the song is utter crap and it falls to #49 the next week before going away entirely. Despite this, the song still spends 14 weeks at #1 on the mongrel chart
* Sam Hunt, finally burdened by criticism over his style, asks Shane McAnally permission to cover "Are Your Eyes Still Blue", surprises everyone with his twangy take on the tune
* Session steel guitarists Paul Franklin and Dan Dugmore, finding their instrument of choice obsolete, learn how to program drum machines and run turntables
* Eric Church stops Mr. Misunderstood at two singles, leads off his next album with a screamy, 15-minute, noisy death-metal song that makes "The Outsiders" sound like Vince Gill in comparison
* Meghan Trainor goes country; Hammer committed to insane asylum
* Steve Holy releases six intended lead singles for his fourth album, all of which peak at #54
* Curb releases The Best of Star de Azlan, Vols. I-IV
* The long-awaited return of McHayes!

2016 Predictions
