Until we get figures from HITS... www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6842826/david-bowie-first-no-1-album-blackstar-us-billboard-200 David Bowie Heading for First No. 1 Album in U.S. on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Blackstar'1/12/2016 by Keith Caulfield The late David Bowie is heading for his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 albums chart with Blackstar. The set, which was released through ISO/Columbia Records on Jan. 8 (Bowie's 69th birthday), could sell perhaps 130,000 albums in the week ending Jan. 14, according to industry forecasters, and debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart dated Jan. 30. Bowie died on Jan. 10 after an 18-month battle with cancer. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the new Jan. 30, 2016-dated Billboard 200 chart is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard's websites on Sunday, Jan. 17. Blackstar's total equivalent album unit figure for the week will be higher than 130,000, and should easily bump Adele's 25 from the top slot. The latter title (released on XL/Columbia) has been No. 1 on the chart for seven consecutive weeks. In his lifetime, Bowie charted seven top 10 albums on the Billboard 200. His highest-charting album was his last album, 2013's The Next Day, which debuted and peaked at No. 2. He previously visited the top 10 with Let's Dance (No. 4 in 1983), ChangesOneBowie (No. 10, 1976), Station to Station (No. 3, 1976), Young Americans (No. 9, 1975), David Live (No. 8, 1974) and Diamond Dogs (No. 5, 1974).

hitsdailydouble.com/rumor_millTHIN WHITE DUKE TO UNSEAT QUEEN1/12/16 It appears that David Bowie will be the first artist to unseat Adele from her perch atop the sales charts, albeit posthumously. Bowie's final album, Blackstar (Columbia), looks set to do more than 160k in its first week, as the rock icon's death drives a giant wave of consumer interest. Stay tuned for updated sales forecasts.

I honestly think Hello and 25 are both mere afterheat of 21 and they wouldn't have been sensationa at all standing on their own.. Adele may be an icon for love songs, but she didn't transform or define any generation. I think her and her music will gather dust after years

So what album will get the SEA/TEA units from sales of Space Oddity, Changes and the rest? Their parent albums? He's had multiple GH releases that feature many of the same songs.

^Has Billboard resolved this? I assume songs TEA are applied to the album on which they first appeared.

So Bowie's getting #1 after all. I thought he would be blocked, but Adele dropped way harder than I thought (I assumed it would stay in the 190k-200k range SPS).

I agree with one thing though, my CD copy of '21'('19' as well) probably does have dust on it, since I play mostly digital music now.

Twas a slightly bigger drop for Adele than I was expecting.

That's a really soft drop of only 25% for Adele. 25 is in its eighth week. With how well Hello's still doing and with the WYWY anticipation I thought it would have smaller drops by this point, even if I wasn't expecting stability as good as Purpose's.

The impact of "Hello" at this point is a bit minimal since everyone knows the song. "WWWY" is on the rise, but it isn't rising as fast as some other singles. Plus, 25 has already sold a huge amount of copies, so to expect it to keep selling huge seems odd. What did 1989 sell in this equivalent week last year? It had sold less overall than 25 has, and it had 2 big hits at that point.

With how well Hello's still doing and with the WYWY anticipation I thought it would have smaller drops by this point, even if I wasn't expecting stability as good as Purpose's. I think this 8th-week-drop is different from a normal album for 2 reasons. 1. 25 has been a monster and has already sold 7.6 million albums. She is Adele and she has defied all expectations but at this point, each sale is an extra cherry on top. 2. It's mid-January and there are usually a few weeks of heftier-than-normal drops coming out of the holidays, particularly for newer albums. Justin Bieber is expected to have the same percentage drop and I think everyone agrees that he has been hugely over-performing. I'm happy Bowie will get his 1st #1 album. It's obviously very sad that he passed away but the lyrical themes of Blackstar (and the "Lazarus" video) and the wave of general love and praise has been quiet beautiful and poetic.

Week of January 4th - 244K equivalent with 172K in pure sales (Blank Space sold 294K, SIO still Top 10) Week of January 11th - 155K equivalent with 111K in pure sales (Blank Space sold 176K, SIO still Top 10) At this point 1989 has sold 3.94 million.

Yeah the weeks don't quite match up because of the sales week change, but basically 1989 had a fairly big drop in mid-January last year.

Wouldn't be surprised to see him pull an "upset" over Adele at the Grammys next year as well.

The last posthumous winner for Album Of The Year was Ray Charles back in 2004. I think Adele's power is too strong to lose though.

I actually thought it would have done closer to 200k with the news of his passing. I think without his passing, it probably would have bee like 90k-110k. I think more people are interested in his OLDER stuff than the new. It is possible the new album could be a steady seller, but who knows.

This album was getting the best album reviews he's seen in decades even before he passed and people realized he intentionally released this right before his death as his "swan song". Not a lot of final albums are already getting exceptional reviews before the artist passes.

Do you think it is a given it will be nominated though? We still have many months...with plenty of huge potential releases along the way from Grammy favorites like Kanye West, Lady GaGa, Beyonce, not to mention un-announced stuff, surprise picks, etc

No one has a song that spends ten weeks @#1 and an album that comes close in sales with its predecessor by mere "afterheat." "Rolling in the Deep," "Someone Like You," "Set Fire to the Rain" and "Hello" will be AC/HOT AC recurrent staples for years to come. Not to mention, all of the catalog sales her albums have received and will continue to receive. You're thinking about Frank Ocean when you say "gather dust after years."
