I like this and I think it's a smart move on his part. It separates him immediately from One Direction musically. And it also showcases his voice, which I think is his number one priority right now, because I don't think anyone has a solid idea of what he's capable of vocally based on his tenure in 1D. He sounds good on this. The video is EH.

Next day effect: 1) The hook does get stuck in your head but it's still boring. 2) I'm still STRETCHING to find the "urban influence" he's been building up. 3) I still can't watch the video while keeping a straight face. His (convenient) new relationship with Gigi seems to involve more chemistry with camera time than each other. And those random painted lady silhouettes?? I don't even know. I'm more convinced that this will be a big hit than I was on first listen, but I'm still disappointed. He could have easily come harder. I didn't want the type of Urban material that would polarize his potential for mass appeal, but I fully expected a Beauty Behind The Madness/ Purpose level jam. Instead we get this sleepy Nick Jonas/One Direction/Leona Lewis ( Mic Technique, you're so right. This is so her) snoozy ballad.

I dont see how this is some big break in sound from 1D. Lyrically, sure. But it would fit musically with the rest of 1D's discography.

I liked it way more than expected.
And this is a smart move, the song is a departure from OD song but not a big break, the kind of song that his older fans could like (there will be more than enough time to explore more different sounds). His vocals are really good, but that's not a surprise because he was a best singer in the band (and all of them can sing)

LMAO. Justin Beiber wannabe much? This is total crap. Plus the guy has the ZERO screen presence and a bland personality. *SMDH* girls and gorls will worship anything with a dick these day.

I like it, it's not the earthshattering song some people are making it out to be. Pretty standard boy band solo record stuff IMO. I'll see how the next single is before writing him off entirely though

Not to nitpick, but this sounds like every other alt/sexy R&B song that those R&B cats that are relegated to Urban and Urban AC are doing. If this becomes a hit here, then I know why.

Sounds middle of the road at best. For him being his own hypeman in some ways and what I thought he would be stretching for sonically here is sparse here. The video is a mix of hysterical and cringey all rolled into one.

This is going to be huge. Just think about it. The fans will buy and/or stream the song, the video will get a good amount of views. This should be big on airplay too. You could say that, but when he was part of 1D not even a year ago, why wasn't that the case? He probably had just as much fans then, if not more with the added 1D members also having their own fanbases, yet they don't seem to do much on the Hot 100 past debut week. Well, that is true

Did you listen to the song?! Um, yes. Otherwise I wouldn't have posted in this thread. And yes, I listen to urban radio, music, etc. as that's my favorite style of music. "Pillow Talk" sounds exactly like what I said it sounds like, and saying it doesn't is weird. He said he was going into a more R&B direction, and that's exactly what "Pillow Talk" is.

I like it. It's catchy enough and shows off his voice. Not to nitpick, but this sounds like every other alt/sexy R&B song that those R&B cats that are relegated to Urban and Urban AC are doing. If this becomes a hit here, then I know why. Did you listen to the song?! Eh, it could be a Tank or Jaheim track (obviously with their vocals it would sound more r&b, but nothing about the arrangement would have to be changed except softening the drums a little). The Chris Browns, Bryson Tillers, Torey Lanez, etc. are not doing anything like this. Maybe Trey would but it would never be a single for him. Hence the real issue with it, if we're going to consider it an 'r&b' song - it's just not a standout in that sense, and in fact terribly dated by urban standards (but fine filler for UAC). But for pop, it is simultaneously extremely safe yet a standout. Timing really worked in his favor here - not many male ballads out right now, and the stronger male vocalists (Sam, Bruno) are on hiatus at the moment so Zayn can distinguish himself from the Biebs without being overshadowed by someone else.

The song, video, and vocals = SEX!!
It's like August Alsina gone pop. Go ahead Zayn, I'm here for you!

Haven't seen the video yet but...I like the song. I'm not blown away by it but, then again, I was never expecting to be. It's definitely on the level of Nick Jonas but, hey, that's not a bad thing! I feel like Nick is pop with R&B leanings (Chains and Numb are pop, for sure, but still edgy enough to flirt with R&B and get people that shun pop to nod their heads) so if that's the lane that Zayn is cruising down, I'm on board. I'm just glad that I am able to hear his voice distinctly now. Since Malay didn't have a hand in this, I am hopeful that I will enjoy the songs he worked on even more.

Now I can't get Omarion "O" and Avant "4 Minutes" out of my head.

I really like the song it's kinda catchy and this is so shocking to me because i have never EVER liked a song for 1D. But that video? Come on it's so weird and what's with that pokerface in all the video? It's like he doesn't give any f**ks about the whole damn thing *inserts straight face*
