With all the great press and accolades this one is getting, they should try and push a single to country radio. Even if it could just hover around the bottom 50-60, I would love to see it. "Sea Stories" or "Keep It In Between The Lines" would probably be the best choices for any radio consideration.

I heard the renditions of "Call to Arms" and "Keep It Between the Lines" on SNL. They still didn't impress at all.
The former was just whining about "war is bad bawwwwww". Like I care. Same reason "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath does nothing for me. "Keep It Between the Lines" was just a lame knockoff of "Don't Ask Me How I Know" by Bobby Pinson and 40 billion other "life lesson" songs just like it.
WHAT is his appeal? If he's not wholesale ripping off others, then he's doing stuff so contrived that no one can make heads or tails of it.

So far he's not grabbing me. All of his stuff is way too convoluted and spacey, and just goes right over my head. I can't even understand a word of that pollywog song, and I was looking at the lyrics as I listened to it. ^ Yeah, I will say the one thing that I don't like about Sturgill is that I can't understand his words well sometimes. I don't mean in a "can't make out what he's singing" means. I can understand his diction and articulation okay. It's just that his vocabulary, phrasing, and subject matter are often so opaque to me that I can't comprehend the song's subject matter in any way. As I've said before, I've had "Turtles All the Way Down" explained to me, and I still don't know what the song is about topically. If you still want to try to get into him, I recommend his first album ( High Top Mountain). It's a lot more conventional in just about every way. No Nirvana covers or LSD references. "Hero" (a dedication to his father) is probably my fave track. Finally tried a couple tracks off High Top. "Life Ain't Fair..." just sounds like he's parroting outlaw country cliches we've heard a billion times. "Hero" sounds like he's just parroting "my dad was an amazing man" cliches we've heard a billion times. "Railroad of Sin" is just a ripoff of "Long Black Train", only about four times faster. Seriously, how did he go from a cheap dollar-store knockoff of Jamey Johnson to being such a frickin' head trip?! What is even the appeal?!? The "too long/didn't read" version? This song contains a hell of a lot of symbolism. It is an absolute treasure trove for critical thinking and literary analysis. I tried to use my above thoughts to draw comparisons between the lyrics in the song and Civil War soldiers, since that is the context surrounding the founding of Decoration Day, but that is only one of many perspectives through which this song can be analyzed. So just like Sturgill Simpson, you have to have an IQ of 300 just to know what it's even about. Whatever happened to country music being a plainspoken, straightforward genre? No, but it's usually easy to understand the overall story or emotion being expressed. And I can't even get that far. On any of his songs that I've listened to (except the High Top Mountain stuff, where he just sounds like a severely watered-down Jamey Johnson instead). Or that Decoration Day song. Or much of anything outside the mainstream. Again, all of it is just gibberish to me, expressing stories or emotions that I can't figure out how ANYone can pick up on because they're so freaking convoluted and obtuse.
