Released in the fall of 1982 as the first single from his album of the same name. Hit #4 on the R&B chart, but stalled at #44 on the Hot 100. It was re-released after the success of "Little Red Corvette" and reached #12 on the Hot 100. One of his signature songs. I love it.

I've always wondered, when was this re-released exactly? Or rather, did it peak during, after, or in between the chart runs of "Little Red Corvette" and "Delirious"?
Anyway this is always the first song that comes to mind when I think of Prince. B-side "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore?" is one of his best as well.

Its re-release was in between "Little Red Corvette" and "Delirious".

One of Prince's best songs even if the title seems outdated nowaways as we're well past 1999. When I was younger, I heard this as an 80s flashback/old school cut on WGCI, V103, B96, and defunct 103.5 Jammin Oldies.

Love it! I'm surprised it only reached #12 on the Hot 100 as this feels more like a multi week#1 to me. There's no denying the song's impact and longevity.

I missed the 40th anniversary of 1999 being released by 4 days. The message in this song still resonates today: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_(Prince_song)Release date: September 24, 1982#25 UK and then a re-release in 1985 had it peak at #2 Some music critics have suggested Phil Collins' 1985 song "Sussudio" sounds very similar to "1999". Collins confirmed this claim,[8] and remembers listening to "1999" frequently while he was on tour with Genesis. VH1 notably played this video continuously from midnight Eastern Time on December 31, 1998 to the next midnight on January 1, 1999.

People say that Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" was the first video played by a black artist on MTV.
It was actually Prince's 1999:
MTV video adds 40 years ago this week on 2/18/83:
