I'm hoping for a soulful / poppy sound still. I'm definitely way more into her pop anthems than anything else. I like the new beginning and Atlantic will make her a big focus / priority (like RCA used to do). But the thought of her doing a straight up soul / R&B album kinda scares me, since Thankful is my least fav album of hers. I want to start by saying I totally respect that-- just keep in mind the context of Thankful. She had international fame without having released a single piece of music by her name (aside from AMLT) and had spent months on national television just covering various Aretha Franklin songs. The label-- and, honestly, probably Kelly-- had very little idea which direction was right for her voice, and was largely playing it safe and recording some middle-of-the-road R&B. Fast forward fifteen years of experience in the industry, a matured musical ear, a label that specializes in R&B / soul / blues, an established place in pop and music culture... the scenarios are quite different. I'd be shocked if anything like Thankful materialized from this partnership. Other than maybe something like "Miss Independent," in which case... no complaints.

The wording they used to describe this next project as soul/R&B-inspired makes me think it will still be pop but with those influences more than a straight R&B/soul album. At least I hope so. Also, re: her songwriting. I know there are some diehard fans of My December on here, but that album was really, really not good. And most every song blended together to the point of almost complete sameness. "Tightrope" and "Piece by Piece" make me think she has good songwriting in her, but I also don't think it's really necessary for her as an artist. (Let's also never forget she co-wrote "Einstein" too )

I'm excited for this. I do hope that she does have a mature sound, but she also does make it mainstream. There are ways to be adult and mature, but she can still (And should) make anthems and get hits. and if radio does abandon her, at least songs that WOULD song on place at radio.

A few things...
...this will not be Thankful II. That doesn't compute. Thankful has some tinges of R&B/soul, at least more so than her other albums, but is by no stretch of any stan imagination an R&B/soul album.
...flawed as My December is, a lot of that has to do with the same-y production. Looking at the variety of song structure and lyrics across that album, and several songs as a whole (Maybe, Sober, Irvine, Be Still, Can I Have A Kiss) are really wonderfully written. That the album exists in this weird contentious space and is bogged down by a limited POV (who knows whose fault that is) and one-note production (we know whose fault that is) doesn't really have anything to do with who she is as a songwriter, then or--especially--now. In recent years alone, she's written the gamut of sounds and styles, from "In The Blue" to "Tightrope" to "Underneath the Tree" to "Bad Reputation" to "4 Carats" to "Catch My Breath." This will be good.
...I finally got a chance to peruse the Atlantic Records roster and...I'm even more here for this transition. I'd be interested, if not thrilled, if she gained inspiration from and/or collaborated with any of the following: ABBA, Aretha Franklin, Bette Midler, Bruno Mars, Cee Lo Green, Charli XCX, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Flo Rida (if for no other reason than to keep you power-pop girls happy, and she could kill a chorus to one of his songs), Icona Pop, Janelle Monae (probably the most exciting revelation in my review), Missy Elliot, Stevie Nicks.

So exciting! Thrilled that she's moving in an r&b/soul direction. We've been lucky enough to get 6 really great pop studio albums, a greatest hits record, a few good country singles, an immaculate Christmas album, and now we'll finally get the r&b/soul/pop hybrid a lot of us have always wanted. Great day to be a KC fan!

I'm honestly surprised that she's not going to make a country record. But I am looking forward to this.

Good. She should be doing something with a traditional R&B/blues flare. Her voice is perfect for it.

Yesssss. So happy she chose to leave RCA.
Does this mean we get quality music videos again ala BOY, BTHE, and NA?

*pulls out Wrapped In Red and plays "Every Christmas"*.
Can some die hard fans list any unreleased or album tracks that's heavily R&B/soul? I need a playlist now.

Wonderful news! It's exciting that she seems to be entering a whole new phase in her career rather than just sitting comfortably on her past success, which she could easily have done. I can't wait to hear her doing something more soulful!

I'm so excited for Kelly and this album, but most of all for her freedom from the clutches of RCA. They are literally my least favorite label and I think Kelly will be so much happier and better off.

Wonder if RCA will do a re-issue of her Greatest Hits (w/added Heartbeat Song, Piece By Piece, may be an unreleased song or two) or repackage it as a double disk with the Christmas record in order to squeeze a lil more cash out of Kelly before she releases the first new record on Atlantic in 2017.

Some Kind of Miracle What's Up Lonely Thankful Anytime WHY DON'T YOU TRY Baby Blue Eyes Drowning I Can't Lose Slamming Doors What Happened Here Wonder if RCA will do a re-issue of her Greatest Hits (w/added Heartbeat Song, Piece By Piece, may be an unreleased song or two) or repackage it as a double disk with the Christmas record in order to squeeze a lil more cash out of Kelly before she releases the first new record on Atlantic in 2017. I was wondering the same thing. Obviously Atlantic Records wouldn't necessarily release RCA songs on their Chapter 2 (but then again, RCA put Don't You Wanna Stay on theirs). Heartbeat Song especially would be completely out of place in a collection of soul songs. However, Piece By Piece would be a nice addition.

I'm pretty sure they will release a random compilation later this year and it's gonna be either this cheap Playlist or a 2-disc Essential. Or both in the coming years since it's what Sony does with their catalogue.

i was wondering... do u think she bought the rights to her own catalogue (released & unreleased) or rca has it? if hope she got them, i think it's more likely we get unreleased stuff here & there from her than from them, like the Already Famous stuff
