Kelly's said previously that fun, happy songs aren't as enjoyable to write. She's seemingly been in a good place the last few years, so she's probably not having the same intense experiences as she did pre-My December, ones that would produce her ideal songwriting material. So it doesn't surprise me she's outsourcing to other writers.
I love when she writes her own stuff, but I'm glad she's open to other writers too. Some of her best interpretations have come from songs she didn't write ("Someone," "Beautiful Disaster," "Stronger," etc.).

I wish she was writing more because the emotional delivery in her songs have been phoned in since My December, with the track Piece By Piece being the only exception. Tightrope and Already Gone would like to have a word with you. ;) My statement stands? Already Gone is actually one of the more phoned-in vocals in terms of emotional delivery. Maybe, How I Feel, Irvine, Because Of You, Piece by Piece? Maybe not everyone can hear when someone really means it.

Insert gigantic eye roll here -----> <----- Kelly doesn't phone in anything she's as real as it gets bruh

The recorded version of AG sounds 'distant' but I always felt that was an intentional production decision on Tedder's part. AG live elevates that song to absurd levels of emotion. But then, Kelly could sing The Muffin Man live and I would think it's above and beyond. She even made me bop to MLWSWY and I didn't think it would ever be possible for me to fully enjoy that song. I never really thought about it til now, but Kelly's best penned songs do tend to be the sad/angsty ones...the bridge of MI, I Want You, and of course the original songs from WIR are happy-Kelly standouts. Her worst ones (for me) are the pseudo-inspirational attempts (I Had a Dream, If No One Will Listen).

Maybe, How I Feel, Irvine, Because Of You, Piece by Piece? Maybe not everyone can hear when someone really means it. The studio version of "Already Gone" is one of Kelly's most restrained performances. I think that level of "distance" (as cynthia & friends pointed out) adds a very ethereal and haunting quality to the song, and it allows her to skillfully express the feeling of love long lost. Her vocals are stunning in that regard. ETA: I think if she phoned-in anything, it was MLWSWY. I believe Slant suggested that her performance there was akin to a "vocal eye roll." For some reason, that description has always stuck with me lol. But the song is a bop nontheless, so I'm not too concerned.

If No One Will Listen is so ironically titled since after hearing it once no one will listen to it again.

Would someone be so kind and explain to me what her role was during the creation of INWL ? Cuz she certainly did not edit vocal and instrumental tracks. I actually love the whole album except for IDNHU

This kind of makes it worse for me b/c I even dislike how she sounds on INWL, a problem I have never had with any other recording she's ever done. But I always forget she has producer credit rather than writing on that one, so I guess it is a relief to be reminded she didn't also have a hand in the lyrics, lol. StrongBreakaway a producer's general role is to oversee the overall creation of a track or several tracks. Kelly likely handpicked the song and dictated how the finished version would sound, while letting an engineer handle the technical tasks of editing and mixing it to her standards.

Didn't she collaborate with Kurstin on most of WIR? I know he produced most, if not all of it. I could be totally off (meaning I don't realize there are some songs she wrote and produced solely with Jason and her bandmates) but I don't tend to like her self penned material unless she collaborates with someone outside of her "inner circle," for lack of a desire to come up with a more precise term.

Kurtstin produced the whole album but only has writing credits on "Underneath the Tree" and "4 Carats." Kelly wrote "Wrapped in Red," "Every Christmas," and "Winter Dreams" with Jason and her bandmates/friends.

OK. I guess the producer she works with on her/in-house self-penned songs is key, bc I live for all the songs there (except 4 Carats, ironically).
I'm not familiar with big R&B producers nowadays - anyone know of any Kelly will do well with? I know it's not 2006 but I would love a Timbaland collab.

Her and Kurstin clicked on a new level for WiR, but didn't seem in sync on PxP at all. I'm wondering if the style of music and her obviously clear vision for the WiR were the big reasons for that.
Either way, with this album seeming very driven by her in a way we haven't really seen since My December, that the production is up to par. Jason gave us Catch My Breath, and I think he "gets" how to capture her voice, but I'm a bit uneasy about him helming the whole album.

I forgot about this performance from 6 years ago, when KC entertained the POTUS/FLOTUS, among other political dignitaries.

Kelly just dragged that soul to the deepest pits of hell and back. God BLESS.
Also, I am terrified when she political tweets, because it's only a matter of time before it goes way wrong and causes a shitstorm.

That had better be a demo, because I don't think I've ever heard her sound so flat (both in terms of off-key and in delivery).

Booooo. I was hoping she'd do more actual pop/rock (Breakaway tbh) because that was when she shined the brightest. Although, I'm sure she'd sound great singing soul songs as that was what she primarily sang on American Idol, and knocked every performance out of the park. In the end, it's gonna come down to the songwriting and how decent the songs actually are. Kelly is one of the best vocalists hands down in the music industry but her actual music this decade has been lacking, especially in the last few years or so. Hopefully a new label will pair her up with different songwriters, maybe some who have worked with her label mates (Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars) and can really give her some new classics.
I hope Atlantic markets her as an Adele type and really promote her for her voice. I actually think she's a much better singer than Adele, she's a lot more consistent live and has a nicer tone in my opinion. She's just gotta have good material this time around. Piece by Piece was terrible.
