"fad" songs are what they are, red-hot for the moment but no staying power after the "fad" burns out

Ugh please do not mention that horrible song. It spent way too many weeks at the top. My entire school did a dance routine to it with teachers and all. Awful times.

05 05 Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix) - Los Del Rio Ha! Y'all had to listen to this a lot over those 14 weeks @ #1! I wasn't alive then...It didn't get as much airplay as it had sales, but yes, we had to listen to it on radio and more so at weddings and the like. The advantage it had on the chart is that it charted initially off the original version, but then the remix came out and helped take it to another level. But yeah, "fad" songs are not my favorite.

Depending on how long One Dance stays #1, it looks like "This Is What You Came For" will dethrone its spot some time.

I'm not surprised you don't know EMF but you've never heard "Unbelievable"? Nearly every movie or TV show set in the early 90s has used it. That distinctive "Oh!" at the beginning of the song is pretty well known. It sounded somewhat familiar, so I'm sure I probably heard it before. So y'all don't like The Macarena? I'm surprised, I thought it was a fun song, and made a huge impact in pop culture! Actually, I'm pretty sure the original previously mentioned charted separately, so the most well-known version (what was it, Bayside Boys Remix or something?) went to the top all on its own.

It's great to see so many artists on the iTunes hot 100 that have been around since the 90s. Hope Fergie has a great comeback, her last two singles did nothing.

If TIWYCF were to hit #1, Rihanna would have two #1s each with Drake, Eminem and Calvin Harris.

Everyone's favorite song charted in multiple versions, including this one: ;) That is one of the most half-assed remixes I've ever heard. Did they even listen to it to see if any of the parts actually fit before slapping it onto the Macarena? Also, since when have fad songs ever been known for dying off quickly? Most of the ones I remember (Macarena, Gangnam Style, Watch Me, etc.) have stuck around like glue for months or even years on end. I still occasionally hear the Macarena on the radio.

Didn't say "fall off quickly". I said "no staying power". Today's generation generally does not care for yesterday's fads. . Gangnsm style is not a "fad" song.

Gangnsm style is not a "fad" song. How is it not? I think "fad" songs have staying power. For better or worse people do still know a lot of them.

A "fad" according to the dictionary is a temporary style, notion or manner of conduct followed enthusiastically Macarena was a dance craze that not a lot of people do anymore. Whip/Nae Nae also a dance craze that may not be done much in five years, Gangnam style is a song that does not describe anything in society that was popular. "The Streak", "Pac Man Fever" are examples of songs related to historical fads.

"Gangam Style" definitely had a dance to it that people did and there are plenty of videos of people making their own version (a la whip/nae nae). In a general sense people may not do the dances you mention on a regular basis, but "Macarena" (for example) still pops up at occasions like weddings. Regardless of that, I think in general a 'fad song' can be also just be a song about something specific that isn't what most songs are about and more so feel like a novelty. Personally I consider songs like "Baby Got Back" and "Thong Song" to be fad songs even if they aren't about a dance.

Random wedding or random radio station giving it a spin probably happens but if it was regularly, it would still be popular? Rather than generally despised? In particular by people in this thread? I usually think of novelty songs and society fads as two different things. Sometimes the fad is something done in society created by the song. Weird Al for instance made a career of novelty songs most about food. Food may be something society does but don't think society has stopped eating. Blending the two terms I suppose is up to you.

I think using people's opinions in this thread to mean anything in a larger sense is limited. There is also a difference in being popular and being known. I can't stand "Macarena," but that doesn't mean I don't hear it or even that I wouldn't dance to it at a prom or a wedding. That still doesn't explain how "Gangam Style" wasn't a fad song.

at anyone thinking Gangnam Style is any different from Macarena or thinking no one does the Macarena anymore. Both songs, including Watch Me, Cha Cha Slide, and the Cupid Shuffle are standards at any middle school/high school/college dance. Hell, the latest Macklemore single references the Macarena. Though, I would agree that none of those are fads considering the staying power they have had. A true fan song is something like Harlem Shake. THAT is a dance no one does anymore.

Both songs, including Watch Me, Cha Cha Slide, and the Cupid Shuffle are standards at any middle school/high school/college dance. Hell, the latest Macklemore single references the Macarena. Right. It might just be that people use words differently. I consider them fads because the songs are about something 'random' and the height of their popularity is a moment in time. Even if people still do the macarena at weddings and what not, it isn't a dance the same way the tango or something is. Swing is a style of dance that has been around for awhile, but there was undoubtedly a resurgence in its popularity in the latter part of the 90s. I consider that resurgence a fad even though swing existed before it and still does. I don't think "fad" means something becomes obsolete after, it just means it suffers a decline in popularity.

Is M.I.L.F. $ getting any airplay yet? It's high up on iTunes and the video is getting a decent amount of views. It's showing early signs of becoming a big hit, but I just don't know yet.

Doubtful that it got much airplay yet... mostly because it's a holiday weekend. The jury is still out on radio, and it may take awhile to deliberate. It'll be interesting. Hopefully we'll see some action starting tomorrow (Wednesday morning's update).

But, I mean, if that last sentence were true, then wouldn't all songs be fads, thereby making the whole "fad song" discussion obsolete? I'm okay with that, I just want to make sure we're all on the same page here.

I'm confused about Kanye's Famous video... why are view counts "zero" on vevo? Is it not going to count for the Hot 100? Am I missing something? What gives?
edit: I got logged into YouTube and see it has only 4.3m views. I guess I was expecting a lot more than that. Still don't get why vevo says zero though.

^ That is odd, I guess I really don't know. Maybe just a glitch, or it has something to do with the fact that it's viewer restricted, or his label doesn't want to release the numbers. But then I don't know why they would show the numbers on YouTube.
I would be fine with it not counting though. The video was just.....bizarre, grotesque, boring, bland, didn't see the point he was trying to make....and it was too long!!
