Totally shocked this doesn't have a thread already.
CHR: #3 The Billboard Hot 100: #5 Billboard Album Rock Tracks*: #3
*Now Mainstream Rock.
Also one of three singles to peak at #2 in their native Australia (along with "Good Times" and "Suicide Blonde"); "Original Sin" is their sole chart-topper there.
This is one of those songs written as a last-minute response to somebody (label, producer, or whomever) telling the artist(s) that they're just missing one last song in order to truly complete their album. Listen Like Thieves was essentially completed, but producer Chris Thomas told them that the album had no "hit". With only a day left before the album was due, the band subsequently gave him "What You Need".
I wouldn't call this my favorite song of theirs, but it's definitely good. I do think it's kind of interesting that this hit in the States when it did (early Spring 1986), for I'd be hard-pressed to come up with a single song from the remainder of that year that fared as well or better after this (besides "Addicted to Love") that had anywhere near this much of a rock edge.

One of INXS' best songs. Once heard it used as background music for a car commercial many years ago.

The instruments played on this track are very lively. I prefer this as opposed to their mellow and moodier tracks. The sax is great and 80's as expected.
