-OneRepublic had a smash hit that year (Counting Stars, I Ain't Worried)
-The summer was dominated by a sci-fi blockbuster bringing decade old songs back into the mainstream (Guardians of the Galaxy, Stranger Things)
-Sam Smith and Meghan Trainor, two of 2014's biggest breakout stars, saw brief resurgences in their careers.
-EDM had a brief comeback with I'm Good (Blue).
-The year ended with a massively successful Taylor Swift album with a synth-pop hit (Blank Space, Anti-Hero) as the last smash hit of the year.

There seems to be some discrepancies as to what was #1 in earlier years. I know that Surfin' USA was ranked at either #1 or #2 based on what list you look at (I think it was later revised), but where are you seeing California Dreamin' at #1? (at the list I'm looking at, it's #10).
