8 songs have peaked at #4 so far this year.
1. 24k Magic (peaked in 2016 but was at it's peak on 1/7/17)
2. Bad Things
3. Million Reasons
4. Chained to the Rhythm
5. I Feel It Coming
6. iSpy
7. Sign of the Times
8. DNA.
It's even funnier when you consider that IFIC to DNA all peaked consecutively, so there where 4 songs over 4 weeks that peaked at #4.

^Million Reasons re-entered at #4 after the Super Bowl performance. Chained to the Rhythm, Sign of the Times, DNA. and Wild Thoughts debuted at #4. It is easily the most common debut position in the top 10 for this year's Hot 100.

^It's not only using the title of the biggest song currently. Apparently, some ghost artists have cashed in at Spotify when people do a search and don't recall the name of the artist singing the song they're looking for.

Interestingly, that's not a *completely* new phenomenon. In fall 2008, a few generic cover versions of Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" charted from people buying them on iTunes. A version by "The Rock Heroes" peaked at #29 during the same week that Kid Rock's version was at #28, and a version by "Hit Masters" peaked at #19 a month earlier, actually beating the original's eventual peak of #23!

Songs with similar titles being hits at the same time is not uncommon. En Vogue's "Hold On" was back to back in the top ten with Wilson Phillips' "Hold On" in 1990. Other times, one song title had to be modified to avoid confusion. Lisa Loeb's hit became "Stay (I Missed You)" because of Eternal's top 20 "Stay" earlier in 1994; Sheena Easton changed her title to "Morning Train (9 To 5)" in 1981 because of Dolly Parton's smash "9 To 5" (and both of those songs would reach number one); and the Pointer Sister's released their song as "Jump (For My Love)' in 1984 after Van Halen's "Jump" had gone to number one a few months earlier. And of course we had Rihanna's "Work" charting at the same time last year as Fifth Harmony's "Work From Home".

If Thomas Rhett's Unforgettable does make it to the Hot 100, that would be the fourth song with that title, the other two being covers of Nat King Cole's Unforgettable which pre-dated the Hot 100, one by Dinah Washington and the other with him in a duet with Natalie Cole. Interestingly, no 'Forgettable' have charted in the Hot 100.

This has been pointed out elsewhere, but the last two times Billboard has had a legendarily bad week getting the charts right, Lana Del Rey was (at least indirectly) involved... first it was reporting that "High by the beach" was #7 when it was actually #51, and now this time it happens to be the week she's expected to top the BB200

Don't think this has been said already but on the 08/04/2007 chart Boys Like Girls' The Great Escape and Gwen Stefani's The Sweet Escape charted right next to each other at #31 and #32. That's awesome.

Maroon 5s This Love and She Will Be Loved both peaked at 5 in 2004 for 3 weeks. BUT, thats not all.
BOTH of them made number 5 peak for a week, and then they fell off then 3 weeks later they returned to 5 and stayed for 2 more weeks.
This Love was Late Spring, SWBL was Early Autumn.

- The only two Top 10 songs Natasha Bedingfield have ("Unwritten" and "Pocketful of Sunshine") both peaked at #5.
- In the week "Paper Planes" peaked at #4, a song that sampled it called "Swagga Like Us" debuted right next to it at #5.
That second coincidence made me wonder, is that the only case where a song and another song which sampled it is at the Top 10 at the same time? I do know something like this has happened with the Top 40 when "24K Magic" and "LOYALTY." was in the Top 40 at the same time at one point this year, but has there been any other instance where this has happened with the Top 10? |
