Name some artists whose signature song was at some point eventually surpassed and thus disqualified, with their newer signature song being their biggest. Rule 1: The song that eventually disqualified their previous signature hit must be at least a year old. Rule 2: The peak position of the artist's song on the Hot 100 does not always determine the status of their biggest hit, so not all examples of that qualify. For example, 1D's highest-peaking hit is "Best Song Ever" (#2), but it is most certainly not their biggest hit lmao.
Here are some examples:
"Best I Ever Had" was Drake's highest-peaking hit and thus his biggest hit/signature song until "Hotline Bling" surpassed it six years later despite sharing the same peak position (#2). However, a few months later, Drake finally scored his first ever #1 single in May 2016 with "One Dance", and eventually it was viewed (no pun intended) as his biggest hit of all-time.
Daft Punk's biggest hit for the longest time was "One More Time", but then Get Lucky far outpeaked it in 2013 (#2). If you're counting features however (which I most certainly don't lol), Starboy may at some point outpeak Get Lucky by one spot above, but GL will probably still remain their all-time biggest hit regardless.
Party in the USA from 2009 was Miley Cyrus's signature song until being outpeaked one spot above by Wrecking Ball in 2013.

Literally any artist whose biggest song was released at least a year after their first song applies here.

I think this would be more interesting (and perhaps there's already a thread on it) if we were talking about songs that were not an act's signature song being surpassed years later by a different song of theirs that wasn't necessarily just a new hit single. Think Mariah Carey and Journey.

twenty one pilots: Tear Of My Heart -> Stressed Out Young Thug: Stoner -> Best Friend TBH I don't think Best Friend is really Young Thug's signature song. I think that most people view Lifestyle as it despite it not really being his song.

Bruno Mars-Just the Way You Are -> Uptown Funk Rihanna-Umbrella -> Diamonds Uptown Funk is Mark Ronson's song, not Bruno's. Also Umbrella is probably still Rihanna's signature song, although Work might be a secondary option. Diamonds doesn't feel as big as the other two tbh.

It's either Umbrella, Work or We Found Love. I think it's probably Umbrella since it had far more longevity in terms of airplay unlike Work. Maybe it's just my local radio station, but Work got airplay on my station all the way from the day of its release up until mid-April where it inexplicably stopped receiving airplay and never came back despite it still holding a strong spot on the Hot 100. It received a little more airplay on my Hip Hop/R&B station afterwards though, but at there it stopped receiving airplay around, say, mid-June. Maybe that's either saying something about its genre not really being made for Top 40 radio or the Hot 100 charts not being the be-all-end-all in terms of a song's success. Idk.

Bruno Mars - "Uptown Funk" is almost certainly his signature now. Drake - "One Dance" may be his biggest hit, but it feels like "Hotline Bling" is still his sig. Justin Bieber - It's between "Baby", "Sorry", and "Love Yourself". "What Do You Mean" feels forgotten already and none of his other hits are well remembered aside from the "Believe" hits. Rihanna - "Umbrella" and "We Found Love" are both going to be far better remembered than "Work" in the future. The Chainsmokers - Definitely. "Closer" will likely remain their biggest hit. Sia - No. I still think "Chandelier" is more iconic. Twenty One Pilots - "Stressed Out" will likely be their best remembered song in the long run. Adele - No. People will probably think of "Rolling in the Deep" first. Justin Timberlake - No, "SexyBack" will always be his signature. Desiigner - Nope. He'll always be best known for "Panda". Lukas Graham - No, they'll always be known only as the guys who did 7 Years. Mike Posner - Yes. I'd definitely say "Ibiza" has eclipsed "Cooler Than Me" in the public eye. Flo Rida - "Low" is still his signature hit and it will remain that way.

What about Usher? After the singles from "8701," did anybody expect the first single from his next album to be as popular as "Yeah!" was?

let me interupt the thin voiced convention and talk about a singer. Mariah Carey had 18# hits so its hard to narrow them down
Vision of love passed the torch to We Belong Together
however as time has passed, it was her 1994 non #1 hit, that turned into her signature song. All I Want For Christmas
it might not fit the narrative of the "rules" but really who cares.

TBH all these Rihanna 'songs' can take a backseat to 'Work'. When will YOUR faves craft an iconic masterpiece out of a made-up language?
Bitch do not come for me I know it's actually Jamaican patois okay

Rihanna's biggest song as of 2012 (no Work, no Diamonds) was We Found Love. (Umbrella was actually #4). Source: www.billboard.com/articles/list/513463/rihannas-20-biggest-billboard-hitsI love Disturbia and Hot N Cold but those were never "signature songs". IKAG's popularity and the controversy over the song's lyrics eclipsed Hot N Cold, and it actually reached #1 which HNC didn't. Disturbia never came close to Umbrella's popularity. (In both cases I do agree they're the better song, but still). Tim McGraw only peaked at #40, I don't believe anyone ever thought it was Swift's signature song. While Wrecking Ball was a bigger success chart-wise, Party in the USA will probably end up being more remembered because it's constantly used on TV shows, and it gets a surge of popularity every year around the 4th of July, similar to All I Want for Christmas and Thriller on Xmas and Halloween (on a smaller scale than either of those, but still).

Disturbia never came close to Umbrella's popularity. (In both cases I do agree they're the better song, but still). " I put more emphasis on longevity then I guess. I do agree Umbrella and I Kissed A Girl are more memorable. Disturbia never came close to Umbrella's popularity?? I think it did. Even on the list you linked they are right next to each other. They must have used a weighted system or something. Disturbia spent 26 weeks in the Top 20, 36 weeks in the Top 40. Umbrella spent 17 in the Top 20. 23 in the Top 40. Umbrella was probably very front loaded on the weeks it was #1. Disturbia I believe did come close. At least give it some credit there. "Tim McGraw only peaked at #40, I don't believe anyone ever thought it was Swift's signature song. " Well it was her only song at the time so... "While Wrecking Ball was a bigger success chart-wise, Party in the USA will probably end up being more remembered because it's constantly used on TV shows, and it gets a surge of popularity every year around the 4th of July, similar to All I Want for Christmas and Thriller on Xmas and Halloween (on a smaller scale than either of those, but still)." IDK. I think Wrecking Ball is the most iconic and memorable music video of this decade. To the point where people put it in political cartoons meant for middle aged men 2 years later and people immediately know what they're referencing. I think "Wrecking Ball" will always be a somewhat memorable moment in pop culture. Maybe somewhat like Miley's "Like a Prayer".
