At least it's Top 5 on American radio across all formats. Hasn't even peaked yet...

“Lights Down Low” - The Story of the Unstoppable Song A collection of quotes capturing the truly incredible CHR chart run of “Lights Down Low” by Max featuring gnash This song was recording in 2015 and was originally released as a promotional single to MAX's 2nd album on April 8, 2016. It was officially released as a single on October 16, 2016. It was listed under Cool New Music on All Access as of November 16, 2016. It’s CHR life began with 9 adds on February 9, 2017. Still going. 4 adds this week. SUNDAY PUBLISHED 4/16 UPDATE:CHR/Pop:51 49 MAX Lights Down Low 465 376 89 0.711 Top 50! Max was shy. CHR was an unfamiliar territory for him, and he left the Top 50 for a couple of weeks. But then, he popped back in towards mid-May 2017. We were already surprised by his longevity. Surprised this has held on as long as it has through this chart congestion. I can't believe this is still going. I wish it would just break out already. *gaps* Call him Over The Hill, because he goes Top 40 in July 2017 TOP 40 ON POP42 39 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 1194 1118 76 2.340 + 24 spins + 10 bullet + 0.079 aud it feels like this song had been around forever for some reason Slowly, slowly rose like the temperature throughout the summer of 2017. TOP 30 ON POP!32 29 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 2232 2056 176 7.565 - 5 spins - 48 bullet + 0.062 aud This has been stuck at 35 to 33 since JULY. This is STILL going? Nu Little Engine That Could. Some facts: -Debuted on top 50 pop on May 20th at #49. -Hasn't had a +100 spin day yet. -The sixth oldest song in the top 50 right now. -As for the 6 songs, only this and No Promises are still gaining. -Spent 103 days between #'s 30 and 50 on pop. After four and a half lifetimes, Max debuted on The Hot 100 finally in October 2017. We started talking about recurrency, and it started to look like he was done- little did we know how much gas was left in the tank! POP23 21 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 4406 3983 423 16.253 + 48 spins + 2 bullet + 0.120 aud
Debuts on Billboard Hot 100 at #95!! The recurrent date for this song is quickly approaching. How does that work if it still has a bullet, but isn't in the top 10? Does it just go recurrent when it loses spins? POP20 20 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 5197 5129 68 21.074 - 2 spins - 34 bullet - 0.138 aud Is this song about to die? Then, just we thought the lights were about to be turned off completely, HE GAINS. Yay.! POP18 16 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 6081 5491 590 27.891 + 107 spins + 80 bullet + 0.910 aud HOT AC16 16 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 1934 1727 207 10.201 + 6 spins - 42 bullet + 0.029 aud I think it's been long enough since I last posted some of this that I'll do it again, since this song is STILL climbing. - This first hit the Top 50 on April 16th 2017, which was 214 days ago. This has far outlasted any other single on the chart at that time (and many artists' next singles as well) - This was back when Chained to the Rhythm and I Don't Wanna Live Forever were still in the Top 10. Other songs debuting around that time include Bon Appetit. - It fell out for a few days and teetered back and forth, but was pulled back in in May and has been steadily gaining spins ever since. - It is eligible for recurrency next week but is still climbing. The longevity here is really remarkable. How is this still doing good at radio? Seriously. I get so many have asked this, but this doesn't happen often. He went into the freeze at the end of December in the mid-teens, with doubts at how far he could go. I... have no idea why radio is even bothering with this song if nobody's here for it. Like, do they not have still have research and indicators they can refer to prior to something reaching familiarity threshold for the call-out list? I mean, I'm here for it, haha. I guess it's really just used for filler, but unlike "Sooner or Later" by Aaron Carter, this has gotten huge somehow. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a song with this kind of longevity continue to rise this consistently. Reminds me of “Remember When (Push Rewind)” by Chris Wallace, but this song’s run is even more impressive. New singles rise and fall off the chart, artists try second and third singles, entire seasons have come and gone, and this freaking song is still gaining on CHR. Beyond all reason, the freeze HELPED. New peak of #12 in the Final Update POP13 12 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 7777 7246 531 39.158 Biggest gain in the top 50 today!!! This truly is the song that never dies. Hot 100: #54 (+3) Pop Songs: #13 (-1) Digital Song Sales: #44 (debut) So, it's finally getting decent sales... this is one of the most interesting runs I've seen for a song. Any reason why gnash isn't credited on that chart there? Holy s**t at this nearing the top ten. We became scared, disoriented. When will it end? How much further could he go? WIll he ever stop? I've finally accepted that this will never peak. It will go to #1 and break the spin record. But it won't stop there. It will just keep gaining and eating into the spins of other songs until eventually it is the only song played on radio. And that's not all. More and more stations will keep being created for the sole purpose of maintaining a bullet. Once every frequency in every area is taken, we will start colonizing again just to increase territory for "Lights Down Low" to be played. Stations will be created in the ocean. In space. It will never end. And while doing this, it will never enter the Top 20 on iTunes. Hot 100: #41 (+6) Pop Songs: #12 (=) Radio Songs: #12 (+5) Digital Song Sales: #36 (+3) New peaks for all rising positions. Holy Christ. POP12 9 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 9628 8732 896 56.490 + 197 spins + 139 bullet + 2.326 aud HOT AC11 11 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 3639 3358 281 22.046 + 38 spins - 3 bullet + 0.136 aud AC13 13 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 521 459 62 3.984 + 9 spins - 6 bullet + 0.086 aud Songs will rise and fall, albums will drop and flop, seasons will come and go, artists will be discovered and forgotten.... and this song will still be slowly and steadily gaining spins on CHR. It's worth noting that February 7th is the date this song started to really pick up at radio. It received 9 adds from stations that week, with a total of 13 stations playing it at that point. That was the most adds that the song received in a single week until August 15th, when it again received 9 adds, with 12 more the following week. So even though this song didn't make top 50 until April, February is really it's "birth" month. Happy one year birthday! Records were smashed. Wigs were snatched. Lights Down Low was shining bright. Has a song ever lasted this long before? From Billboard: RIAA officially updated their site to show the song has been certified Platinum. Hot 100: #30 (+8) Pop Songs: #10 (+1) Radio Songs: #8 (+1) Digital Song Sales: #36 (re-entry) *re-peak* Every time we think he would start to fall… Is this finally dead? Despite its spin gain, it took an overall loss in audience. TRIUMPH! HE WOULD RISE AGAIN! Excuse me!? POP9 8 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 11487 11303 184 66.637 + 63 spins + 59 bullet + 0.224 audience HOT AC8 6 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 4568 4295 273 29.108 + 47 spins - 9 bullet + 0.333 audience AC14 14 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 662 616 46 5.069 + 10 spins - 5 bullet + 0.066 audience Massive updates continued into MARCH: POP8 8 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 11720 11383 337 66.901 + 112 spins + 69 bullet + 0.301 audience HOT AC7 6 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 4845 4437 408 30.601 + 93 spins + 71 bullet + 0.497 audience AC14 13 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 724 613 111 5.537 + 11 spins - 2 bullet + 0.026 audience And then finally, after nearly a year on the chart, the end approached. POP8 7 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 11909 11765 144 65.403 - 30 spins - 72 bullet - 0.445 audience HOT AC6 4 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 5187 4906 281 33.194 + 26 spins - 35 bullet + 0.159 audience AC13 12 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 845 743 102 6.391 + 32 spins + 13 bullet - 0.071 audience Godamnit this isn't looking good. Can't believe this is the 300 day in top 50. POP7 7 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 11718 11943 -225 66.303 - 71 spins - 35 bullet + 0.436 audience HOT AC5 3 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 5432 5161 271 34.895 + 79 spins + 54 bullet + 0.493 audience AC12 10 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 994 813 181 6.754 + 19 spins + 4 bullet - 0.034 audience It may be over on pop radio. But look at all format radio. I think it's still gaining. What a run. 11 months after initially debuting on CHR, the bottom falls out, and Max is done. Last update. Thanks for follow this crazy run. POP7 7 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 11397 11853 -456 66.922 - 125 spins - 54 bullet - 0.155 audience HOT AC4 3 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 5717 5236 481 36.983 + 104 spins + 77 bullet + 0.688 audience AC11 10 MAX Lights Down Low f/Gnash 971 896 75 7.233 - 1 spin - 7 bullet - 0.025 audience Overall AI5. (+2) MAX - Lights Down Low (118.837) (+0.700) It has yet to peak on overall AI, but will soon. It will go recurrent on Sunday, March 25th, but it will stay forever in our hearts.

This (likely) won't go recurrent until April 1. There's no way that this can go below God's Plan this week. The only way this will go recurrent this week is if it falls below Camila, The Weeknd and Dua Lipa which might happen I guess.

Oh, and it's run is far from over on other formats. This will be #1 at HAC this week and maybe a future AC #1, plus this will get some good recurrent airplay at CHR.
RIP at CHR. You will be missed.

The only way this will go recurrent this week is if it falls below Camila, The Weeknd and Dua Lipa which might happen I guess. Actually, it's at #7, so it needs to be overtaken by 4 more songs this week to go recurrent next Sunday. The only even remotely conceivable possibilities are from Camila, The Weeknd, Drake, Dua Lipa, and Selena. But Selena is falling pretty damn hard and is more than 1K spins below Max at the moment, and as you pointed out Drake is quite far at over 3.5K spins away. It could drop past Dua and easily be overtaken by Camila and the Weeknd, but without being passed by Drake or in an extreme scenario Selena, the lowest Max will be next Sunday is #10, which is still safe from recurrency.

WHY DID IT TAKE SO DAMN LONG. But seriously, this is a shining example of why pop radio needs to not take its cues from the streaming charts. By sheer perseverance this was able to become a huge hit even when the sales and streaming were not really there, and the enormous radio presence helped it actually reach an audience.

I said in the G-Eazy & Halsey thread; I think this is just the chart fixing itself after the DST change last week, when everything lost an hour. Tomorrow onwards, it should be back to what it was doing for most of the last week.

One final post to say it almost made it a full year! April 2017-April 2018. It's officially recurrent as of today, 4/1. Is today really the last day for Max? Anyone know his total week or day count on CHR? I'm glad he made it to April 2018, since he first appeared in April 2017 Yes, "Lights Down Low" will be the lone recurrent, this week. It spent 37 weeks in the top 40 and 47 weeks in the top 50. That 47 week run makes it the second longest top 50 run, EVER. The only track to last longer in R&R/Mediabase history was Real McCoy's "Another Night", which racked up 52 weeks in the top 50. And that was before we had recurrent rules. Sticking around that long with recurrent rules in place is, truly, an impressive feat. With MAX's departure, "Love Lies" will get #40. "Beautiful Trauma" will be purged. Maren Morris is the first "pure" Country artist to get to #1 on the Pop chart since 2005, when Tim McGraw started the year at #1 featured on Nelly's "Over And Over" (Taylor Swift doesn't really count as Country anymore).

Actually, Lights down low had 48 weeks on the Top 50 chart (4/16/17 through 3/25/18, minus 4/23/17 and 5/14/17 when it slipped out), which ties it with Blues Traveler "Runaround" for 2nd all time to "Another night". I didn't think I'd ever see a song go that long with recurrent rules in place - if this was out in 1995 it might have gone another 20-30 weeks the way songs just dripped slowly down the chart...
