www.clickondetroit.com/entertainment/singer-aretha-franklin-i-am-retiring-this-year-after-release-of-new-albumSinger Aretha Franklin: 'I am retiring this year' after release of new albumAretha Franklin told Local 4's Evrod Cassimy she plans to "retire" this year after the release of her new album. "I must tell you, I am retiring this year," Franklin said. Franklin said she is "exuberant" about her new album and "can't wait to get in the studio." The album is expected to be released in September, with a tour that includes only select dates. She won't have more than one date planned per month, and the full tour will last "maybe for six months." Franklin spent 56 years as a legendary singer and songwriter. "This will be my last year," Franklin said. "I will be recording, but this will be my last year in concert. This is it." She's not retiring completely. She said she will do "some select things, many one a month, for six months out of the year." But she said her grandchildren are leaving for college and she wants to spend time with them. Franklin said the announcement is bittersweet because "it's what I've done all of my life." "I feel very, very enriched and satisfied with respect to where my career came from, and where it is now," Franklin said. "I'll be pretty much satisfied, but I'm not going to go anywhere and just sit down and do nothing. That wouldn't be good either." Franklin said since she's been extremely active throughout her career, it wouldn't be good for her to just sit down and do nothing, so that's why "she's keeping the one or two concerts in every month or so." She also talked about what to expect in the new album. "Of course, several of the songs are going to be produced by Stevie (Wonder), and of course there's only one Stevie, right?" Franklin said. She said she can't wait for the new CD, which goes in several different directions. "It's kind of multi-(directional)," she said. "We're not pigeonholed to any one thing." Franklin said she'll be recording exclusively in Detroit. "I keep my business in Detroit, or as close to Detroit as possible," Franklin said. She said all the songs on the new album will be originals.

Here's to hoping she somehow can get a couple more Hot 100 entries. Seems highly unlikely but the fact that Nicki Minaj is about to pass the Queen of Soul is a travesty :/

Love her, but her voice isn't what it used to be. Hoping this final studio album is something that's suitable to her current vocals. That RITD cover from her last album was more of a joke than anything else. Thank you Cissy Houston for those legendary memes.

""She said, 'Give me a hug.' I said, 'Oh hell no. You couldn't be serious,'" Franklin said."
LMAO.

I'm glad Mariah didn't inherit the nastiness of being a diva. I know she looks up to Aretha but thank God she never tries to emulate her behavior.

Aretha is hardly senile. She's just a stone cold bitch.

I don't get the beef, Dionne didn't say anything new it's been circulating for years. This is the height of being petty...

Aretha Franklin: Queen of Soul and Epitome of Petty
I'm still confused about how being called someone's godmother is slanderous. Not like Dionne said she was her pusher.

I'm still confused about how being called someone's godmother is slanderous. Not like Dionne said she was her pusher. I interpreted it as Dionne throwing shade at Aretha's absence from Whitney's funeral; for Dionne to actively acknowledge Aretha not being there and state that she was her Godmother (if that indeed were true) doesn't necessarily paint Aretha in the best light to the attendees and those who took that to be true.

Exactly why the older divas are true masters at shade and the younger divas need to take notice. Dionne is a master at it. LOL

She started this over something from 5 years ago that no one was even paying any attention to. She comes off as a bitter old lady.

That's the thing with Aretha, she's always making a mountain out of a molehill and is taking offense over the most trivial, non-existent s**t. Like when she blew up at Beyoncé for calling Tina Turner "The Queen." As if that's a title reserved for her (Aretha) and her only. I love her and her music though. She's awesome and one of my all-time favorites. eta: what Jazzy said. (I swear I read your comment after I posted mine).

I'm not that interested in Aretha and any current musical initiatives of hers (that's absolutely no disrespect to her talent or her music) but I decided to enter this thread to see what all the activity was about. Now having read, I'm not sure whether to laugh or be very worried. This is funny but the word "petty" doesn't even begin to describe. It's kinda crazy... Aretha has always been like this?

She started this over something from 5 years ago that no one was even paying any attention to. She comes off as a bitter old lady. Exactly. Just petty nonsense. I remember that interview from some years ago where she shaded Natalie Cole. They asked her how she felt about Natalie's new cover of her song "Daydreaming" she said, "Well, she tried it out, but even from the beginning of her career they were trying to make her into me so I guess I'm flattered" Incredible gift, but terrible attitude. I'm over ReRe.

Basically, yes. Now it seems worse because she has these infrequent interviews and always uses them as an opportunity to run her mouth. Enjoy (open the tweet and read through the whole thread for more gems; Luther Vandross' meltdowns are for the history books btw):
