Actually, we do have a number: it pulled in 4.1 million YT streams this past week, according to YouTube's Music Insights. Thanks! I guess I'm not familiar with those type of things yet. Maybe if I start making weekly calculations I'll learn about all these sources for the data required. BTW, that number is not that great for LOTB.

For those wondering about who could dethrone Ed, Lorde is expected to release her whole album shortly. No idea where she will chart or even if the music will be good, but she apparently dropped hints that she was leaning pop while recording. Could she have another Royals?

I think she is going to have a hard time against Ed who is going to have the album release on the same day I am on the fence. I am not confident how well she can do. Her last single, which I think was from the Hunger Games, didn't do so well, but there were soundtracks songs later on that did good, like JT and Pink

The question will be what kind of sound her new music will have and how well it will be received by the public. I wouldn't call her an established artist just yet. Maybe she can avoid the sophomore album jinx.

The thing with Lorde is that Pure Heroine gave her HUGE critical acclaim and a massive cult following. That alone puts her in an entirely different place to come back from than, say, Meghan Trainor. Ever since that album, her career has resembled a small scale version of Adele's.
21 blows up, massive sales, huge hits, lots of acclaim, massive attention to her artistry, does a single for a film that strays from her sound a bit, critics still love it, it gets some attention, ultimately doesn't do nearly as well as the singles from the album, is she a one album wonder? Next Norah Jones? Hiatus. Returns with television commercial announcing new single, massive hype...
Royals blows up, great album sales ensue, decent sized hits, lots of acclaim, great attention to her artistry, does a single for a film that strays from her sound a bit, critics still like it, it gets some attention, ultimately doesn't do nearly as well as the singles from the album, is she a one album wonder? Hiatus. Returns with television commercial announcing new single, big hype...
Even their hiatus length is similar. Adele's "Skyfall" was in late 2012, she returned in late 2015. Lorde's "Yellow Flicker Beat" was in late 2014. She is returning early 2017. 3 years v. 2.5 years.
The only real big difference I can think of is Lorde had a featured credit during her hiatus, "Magnets."
Now, I would never expect Lorde to return the same as Adele, but the parallels are so abundant, you kind of begin to wonder. Will this new album follow a similar, but smaller success pattern of 25?

Are that many people even anticipating new Lorde music?

I think Katy was much more anticipated, and she is doing fine, but not as much as most thought. She never even got to #1 or #2 on iTunes. Lorde is not a one hit wonder, but I think she will be forever remembered by Royals. I hope to be wrong.

Ah I thought Lorde was doing a "drop the whole album" style thing. Still a single is great!
I have literally no idea how she will do. I loved Pure Heroine and am very excited. But I was also very surprised that Magnets went nowhere.

I LOVE Lorde. She is my favorite artist. Even I'm not sure if she can notch another hit though.

Also, where do you all think "Shether" will debut next week?

"Rockabye" will probably peak when Clean Bandit wise up and discount it. Regardless, it will be making the year-end list.

Also, where do you all think "Shether" will debut next week? Probably mid-50's. Though this beef could push it into the Top 20, as the same happened to Drake in 2015 with Back To Back.

Why is Calvin Harris's slide is doing so disappointing in sales so far? It's like THE best song released so far this year imo. Are Frank or Migos not big enough?

Damn, Love on the Brain was such a slow-burner on airplay, but it may be her biggest radio hit from Anti. I know "Work" kind of climbed fast but peaked at #2 and then fell kind of quickly too.

Closer still top 5... HOW? Is it so HUGE on Youtube? If we've learned one thing from streaming, it's that people listen to the same songs over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over...oh, and over.

Closer still top 5... HOW? Is it so HUGE on Youtube? Well, it's still top ten in streaming. Last week is was #5, so it's probably not far from that this week. It's also still top ten in airplay and top 30 in digital sales. The problem is almost all the songs in the top ten, especially below Closer, are incredibly disjointed in points. They're high in one, mediocre in another, and low in the other. Look at Love on the Brain. Higher than Closer in airplay, where it's top five. Yet, it's far behind in streaming, last week it was just outside the top 20. It's also not doing the best digitally, it's #24 on iTunes right now. The only songs really doing well in all three metrics at the moment are Shape of You and I Don't Wanna Live Forever. The only reason Bad and Boujee is between them is because its huge streaming can compensate for its lack in sales.

This is my complaint about streaming. Billboard gives way too much in streaming points. Sales should still be 50%, airplay and streaming each 25%. Some songs may have never been so big.

I think what they did this year and last by raising the sales and decreasing streaming in the point value may be a repeated pattern for a few more years. Streaming is still growing so fast that by the end of this year it will slow down again. It's funny to think that we're only 2 years removed now from the thick of peak-power Taylor Swift trying to take on Spotify, so much has changed since then so fast. No1 curr they just keep streaming lol.

Do you know how many streams it takes for an artist to make anything off it. I buy my music because I'm not a thief. Why do you always jump all over me no matter what I post. I have my opinion and that's all in stating. So please keep to yourself because you have nothing pleasing to say to me. Everyone in the world can stream all they want but by buying music at retail price actually helps everyone out in the long run and it proves what people really like. I have coworkers who stream at work but never really paying attention to what's playing.

I don't like Spotify as generally it sends the same songs to the top and they're there for what seems like forever. I would MUCH prefer more movement, which is currently being prevented by Spotify (although to be honest, it's pretty much just Closer and Bad and Boujee). However, what I think doesn't really matter. Why should a song in the top 10 on Spotify be less important than a song in the top 10 on iTunes? Granted, there is the multiple plays problem but this is just what people are into at the moment and that's what the chart is for, to reflect that. I'm sure it will even out eventually.

Artists receiving minimal royalties from steaming (and I'm including YouTube royalties in this too) is better than receiving none at all from illegal downloading.
