Just when I checked out of music news for several hours Taylor announces her album name...
Love the name of the album! The cover not so much but I can live.

Very interested to see how this era pans out for her after she ran into such an extensive string of dramatic situations these last couple of years. Granted, that seems to be the theme of this cycle, but I'm already starting to see some things across the internet addressing how this whole thing kind of negates her whole "Shake it Off" attitude/persona from just a couple years ago. Throw in the KP drama, and I'm super curious to watch how these next few months of promo unfold before the album finally hits.

I'm more interested in who she produced this album with.

I'm more interested in who she produced this album with. I'm sure Max Martin, Shellback, and Jack Antonoff were involved at some point. Taylor is smart, she wants those hits and they can give it to her. I still have some strange feeling that Drake is involved with this album, if not a feature, at least with writing credits.

Very interesting. Back in the 80's Dusty Springfield released an album entitled Reputation. Songs like In Private and Nothing Has Been Proved were centred on the theme. It would be interesting if the centred most of the songs on this as well.

I love how meta this all is
She used to be the famous girl that everyone can relate to.
Now she's the famous girl no one can relate to.

It's the perfect trajectory from country starlet to major relatable pop star to bad ass bitch. I wonder if this era has been planned for years

I love how meta this all is She used to be the famous girl that everyone can relate to. Now she's the famous girl no one can relate to. That's what's most interesting to me about this project. Her persona has become less accessible as she has become more successful. At this point, she's a walking commercial - very pretty and very polished and nauseating in her relentless need for aesthetic perfection and maintenance of her "likeable" image, but not really that intriguing as a personality. There comes a point where she's going to have to reintroduce some reality and reveal more of herself. And there are many ways that could go wrong for her. This album is a calculated risk and her erasing her social media feed - replete with pictures of her idealized life and ridiculous Fourth of July parties - is a clear signal. But newspapers superimposed on her face? Original and subtle this is not.

That cover is atrocious but she looks about two decades younger with some fat on her face.
I am here for her experimental album but damn did every one of the dependables have to go all weird on us at the same time?

"Mainstream pop" isn't exactly 'in' right now, with EDM and Urban dominating the charts. So it would make sense to be a little more experimental and try new sounds which can either be a success (ANTI), a flop (Witness), or somewhere in between (Joanne).

Billboard Hot 100 only has two EDM songs on it. Taylor will replace but still the outlook is bad.

Everything about this is incredibly calculated, which undermines its authenticity IMO, but the music shall speak for itself.

So it would make sense to be a little more experimental and try new sounds which can either be a success (ANTI), a flop (Witness), or somewhere in between (Joanne). Billboard Hot 100 only has two EDM songs on it. There's not a lot of EDM on the charts right now but wjr15's overall point is correct - the 'mainstream pop' sound is not en vogue at all right now. There are only four or five songs in the current top 40 that one could argue are typical pop (or even EDM which some people consider part of 'mainstream pop' now). Urban and AC/HAC, singer-songwriter fare are the two dominant trends right now. But there are also a couple of Latin songs, a couple of country songs, a couple of rock songs. One really standout ballad. None of this is bad, mind you - no one should ever complain about a diverse music chart - but, there is almost no mainstream pop. Several of the pop songs present on the chart are leaning on urban influences to carry them. The AC/HAC trend is sorta ironic because that was Taylor's bread and butter when she was country-pop, but now she's solely pop and headed in some direction that we still don't have a clue about. That said, I also agree with you that the outlook for female artists this year is very rough. There are only three women in the entire top 20 right now, and two of them are featured acts on a male DJ's song. None of the three songs mentioned would be considered pure pop - or pop at all, even - and when Taylor charts next week she'll possibly be bumping one of those songs out so there won't even be an increase in womanly presence. (It's Katy so I'm sure she won't mind lol) If looking at the top 40 there are 13 songs with a female presence on the chart, but only six of those songs are led by the female artist in question.

I read on Buzzfeed that the single is called Slither. Don't know how true it is or if they were just guessing.

I was fully expecting this era to be named "User" stunts and shows queen knows how to use a situation to her benefit. Good on her! She uses every thing to get ahead and unlike others she wins at it. As per usual she will have one single I enjoy, a few bad live performances, a new drama to set up her next album and a whole lot of fake persona on display in interviews. Buckle up!

In traditional sales perhaps but SZA, Halsey and even Lorde are all doing better than Katy so that was a bit reaching

Granted I haven't followed her career all that closely (debut didn't register on my radar; loved Fearless; disappointed with Speak Now) but I only really started feeling that way with her Red era. Plus the fact she's waited until almost 28 for her "bad girl" era just makes me laugh.

I don't know where she's going to go after this album. If she goes back to making breakup songs, people are going to start bashing her again.

This thread is about to blow up...waiting on pins and needles. Like the theme so far but don't like the art direction. It looks like Rihanna Talk That Talk meets Ashlee Simpson circa 2006. Bleh.

Taylor was born in the Chinese Zodiac Year of the Snake.
