Ariana Grande, The Beatles & Every Act to Chart 3 Songs in the Hot 100 Top 5 Simultaneously
2/20/2019 by Xander Zellner
Grande joins The Fab Four, 50 Cent, Justin Bieber & Drake.
Ariana Grande makes history on the Billboard Hot 100, as she commands the top three positions on the chart dated Feb. 23, with "7 Rings," "Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored" and "Thank U, Next," respectively. She's the first soloist to achieve the feat and only the second act overall, after The Beatles, back in 1964.
Grande also joins a select group of artists to land at least three songs in the Hot 100's top five in a week. In the chart's 60-year history, only four other acts have placed at least three hits in the top five simultaneously.
The Beatles first reached the milestone, as they tallied eight total weeks with at least three songs in the top five. They hold the distinction as the only act to boast the entire top four and top five on the Hot 100 simultaneously.
Two rappers have earned the honor: 50 Cent, in 2005, and Drake, in 2018. They've each spent two total weeks with three songs in the top five.
Plus, Justin Bieber tallied five total weeks with three songs in the top five, a stretch that leads all soloists and is second overall only to The Beatles' eight.
In chronological order, here's a recap of all five acts that have charted at least three titles in the Hot 100's top five simultaneously.
The Beatles, 1964
The Beatles hold a variety of Billboard records, most notably the most No. 1s of any act on the Hot 100 (20) and the Billboard 200 albums chart (18). Another is for the most weeks with at least three songs in the Hot 100's top five:eight, all tallied consecutively from March 7 to April 25, 1964, amid early Beatlemania in the U.S. On the April 4-dated chart, they monopolized the entire top five, a week after claiming the top four. The Beatles remain the only act to infuse the top four and top five in a week.
On the April 4 chart, The Beatles reigned with "Can't Buy Me Love," followed by "Twist and Shout," "She Loves You," "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "Please Please Me," at Nos. 2-5, respectively.
And, during that eight-week period of blocking all other acts from the top three, three Beatles songs spent time at No. 1: "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "She Loves You" and "Can't Buy Me Love."
50 Cent, 2005
Nearly 41 years passed before another act placed at least three songs in the Hot 100's top five simultaneously. Then along came 50 Cent. For two consecutive weeks in 2005, at the height of his career, he claimed the Nos. 1, 4 and 5 spots. On both March 12 and March 19, he ruled with "Candy Shop," featuring Olivia (nine total weeks at No. 1), and placed "How We Do" (by The Game featuring 50 Cent) at No. 4 and "Disco Inferno" at No. 5.
Justin Bieber, 2015-16
Another decade went by before another artist claimed three of the Hot 100's top five at the same time. Bieber tripled up for five nonconsecutive weeks, on Dec. 5, 2015, and then Dec. 26 and Jan. 2, 9 and 16, 2016.
On Dec. 5, "Sorry" placed at No. 2, "Love Yourself" debuted at No. 4 and "What Do You Mean?" ranked at No. 5 (after spending a week at No. 1). Bieber became the first solo artist to land three songs in the top fiveunaccompanied by any other credited artists.
"Sorry" would go on to spend three weeks at No. 1 (beginning on Jan. 23) and "Love Yourself" would follow suit on Feb. 13 (for two weeks).
Drake, 2018
Last year, Drake became the fourth act to land at least three songs in the Hot 100's top five simultaneously. On April 21, "Nice for What" debuted at No. 1, dethroning his previous 11-week No. 1 "God's Plan," which dipped to No. 2, while "Look Alive" (by BlocBoy JB featuring Drake) stood at No. 5. Drake became the second hip-hop act to achieve the feat, after 50 Cent.
Three months later, Drake repeated the trifecta following the release of his LP Scorpion. In the album's debut chart week (July 14), "Nice for What" returned to No. 1 for an eighth week, "Nonstop" debuted at No. 2 and "God's Plan" returned to the top five at No. 4. That frame, Drake rewrote a record, charting a seven songs in the top 10 simultaneously, besting The Beatles' five on April 4 and 11, 1964.
Ariana Grande, 2019
Grande becomes the fifth act to place three songs in the Hot 100's top five simultaneously, and the first female artist to do so, while joining only The Beatles in controlling the top three at the same time.
She's the first soloist to take Nos. 1, 2 and 3 in a week, as "7 Rings" rules at No. 1 for a fourth week, "Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored" debuts at No. 2 and "Thank U, Next" rises to No. 3 (after spending seven weeks at No. 1). As with Drake last year, she makes chart history concurrent with a debut atop the Billboard 200, as Thank U, Next, which houses all three songs, launches with the biggest streaming week ever for a pop album.
