The #1 song in the USA 40 years ago today. His last significant hit outside of Country, and like "Rhinestone Cowboy", it scored the triple crown of #1 Country, #1 AC and #1 Pop (Hot 100). He'd have one more trip there on AC, but this was the last for the other two.
I first heard this song as a kid; it was on a compilation tape released by Capitol Records called American Roads. It grew to become one of my favorites on that tape, and probably still is, though it's been years since I've listened that tape.
