castleoblivion26 , we're both flopping our own queen's rankdown!! (Although at least I'm still doing better than you ) I know, I was beyond shocked when I saw all of the low rankings for "Chances Are" as I really felt that one should have the best chance of all the duets to do well but I guess I was wrong. I will throw this out there, everyone is going to be shocked with the 'duet' that last the longest...That awkward moment when Reba snatches the #1 spot in the Martina McBride rankdown!

I love "Chances Are" a lot as I am a fan of Bob Seger as well. so we lost 5 duets in the first 5 eliminations! I will state that #65 is not a duet. There is at least one more duet to miss the Top 60, maybe more but at least one. No one's gonna care about #65 going this early except maybe the person who loses their #16, maybe some who lose a song in their 40's? but I lose my #68, which is the lowest ranking for this song. Just sit back and enjoy the ride as it will continue tomorrow night! NOPE. TOO SOON!!!!!! I am going to go ahead and predict that this is NOT a thinly veiled hint! it could be a hint but I promise I would never use a song title as a hint...

And then i thought that i dislike most of her duets and gave them low rankings... I guess majority of people hate them even more. I think that Kid Rock duet is not that bad at all (at least not the worst song in this rankdown) but overall i am quite content with the way this rankdown is going so far.

And now that I have had some time to catch up, here are my thoughts so far. First of all, I love everything about the presentation of this rankdown! You have done an absolutely wonderful job castleoblivion26 ! Between the highlighting of each album and the songs that stand out despite not making the final list, the single covers you have made, all your thoughts about the songs and occasional hidden hints, etc. Martina is clearly a topic you are passionate about, and I think you will manage to teach even ME a few things about Martina by the time this is all said and done! Now for the eliminations...
"Care" is a little bit surprising to me as the first elimination. I guess I should have anticipated Pulse's strong Kid Rock aversion tanking this one But honestly he sounds better than usual here, and the song is good, and it is helped immensely by the inclusion of Martina. Her background vocals on this song are haunting to me!!!! Of course most people here are not as Martina-nerdy as I and our wonderful host are, so I will just say right here that I have never heard her belt above an E5, and even then only rarely and briefly. Despite her reputation for a big range, she prefers to stay around C5 or D5 as a cap for her songs. Her part to "Care", however, has several E5s in it! She hits that note over and over in the second half of the song. So as a Martina fan, this holds a special place in my heart as being one of the best examples of her strong vocal technique at work in the seldom-utilized portions of her high range "Marry Me" is definitely better than bottom-2 in my opinion, but I am fine seeing it go now. The song is definitely not one of my favorites, but I enjoy it well enough. I still remember my WTF reaction when that was announced as the follow-up to "I'm Gonna Love You Through It" though. Between "One Night", "Broken Umbrella", and "Whatcha Gonna Do", Eleven was literally DRIPPING with songs that could have continued to foster her newfound momentum. I was so ready for her to have a multi-top-10 era again, and then they went and chose the ONE song on the album that had no business whatsoever being released to country radio... Of course it WOULD tank her entire career, just to rub salt in the wound... Totally cool with "Every Single Night" leaving right now. Even though I like it quite a bit, I also think it is very difficult to rank amongst the rest of her discography. Martina's part is pretty small, but I think her voice sounds really cool on this song. I especially love the arrangement for how she says "Every single night, every single night" 4 times in each chorus, how the 1st and 3rd times are just her voice on one track, but the 2nd and 4th times have her voice on two tracks singing harmony with herself. It is a very small and silly thing to notice, but as a superfan/music nerd, that is one of those little personality quirks that makes this song exponentially better in my eyes than it otherwise would have been. "All Messed Up" is definitely my least favorite song to leave tonight. I never thought that her and Dave sounded particularly good together on this song, so their voices singing the chorus melody in unison sometimes grates on me. I'd still pick it over 80% of what gets released to country radio today, but in a Martina McBride rankdown the competition is stiff enough that this song deserves this low placement. "Chances Are"...just what the hell. This song is BEAUTIFUL!! This is an example of two duet partners who complement each other well. Martina and Bob sound great singing this together, and both of their vocal parts have so much energy despite it being a ballad. This song is truly an emotional experience for me whenever I listen to it... Bottom-20 I could have been talked into, but bottom-5?! Chances are some of you will find me somewhere on your road tonight...
Album tracks "A Woman Knows" - YES, one of Martina's first truly epic vocal performances! I have always loved how he harmonizes with herself to conclude the song. Definitely one I love, and considered picking as well "I Don't Want To See You Again" - Lol looks like you all can thank me for this one! One of Martina's most epic vocal performances, and it isn't even a ballad! This song is so catchy and infectious. It is a total kiss off song as well, which is a style I wish she would visit more. Something with some grit and attitude. "Learning To Fall" - Also awesome! Not one I considered including, but it is a standout for being pretty unique. "If I Had Your Name" - This is the first album track reveal that I am not too crazy about. IIHYN is alright, but has one of the lowest replay values for me out of her entire discography. "A Great Disguise" - OMG, I'm so glad to see this one included! This aaaaaalmost made my list. This is such a well-written song. Fun fact, this was also the first non-single I ever heard from Martina!! It's because Wild Angels was the first album of hers I found in a store and purchased after loving her Greatest Hits cd, and AGD is song #4, and songs 1-3 were all singles. (Of course at the time I thought "Phones Are Ringin'" was the first non-single I heard, but I found out later that it actually was a single... Who knew!)

Care was the song I knew from her. I like the "demo" version of it better though, because it's less country. Great song with a great meaning imo. Oh and T.I. slays.

(Of course at the time I thought "Phones Are Ringin'" was the first non-single I heard, but I found out later that it actually was a single... Who knew!) Read this earlier but wanted to respond to what you said First off thank you for enjoying the presentation. I thought long and hard about how I wanted to present this and share as much Martina music as I could without going overboard. I wasn't sure what people would think about the album highlights but am glad you like it. Hope others do as well. As for the single covers, I was nervous about doing those cause I'm not that good with graphics but I played around a little with fonts and stuff. Some of the duet covers I did last so hopefully they came out good. Definitely like some more than others. The hints I have tried to keep hidden and not be obvious about them and will definitely continue doing them throughout. Will say right now that I have already posted a hint at 2 of the eliminations to come for tonight... We can probably help teach each other some things. I'm gonna try and share as much knowledge as I can as this goes on. One thing I know about but never really looked into was her actual range and you discussed a lot about it that I've never knew. My bottom 4 shifted so much because they are the 4 songs I literally have never been able to get into. Not that any of them are bad or anything but more that I just didn't enjoy them like I do most of her material. "Care" and "Marry Me" are okay but are definitely songs I never go out of my way to listen to. Same with my 68 (coming at 65) and my 67 (coming MUCH later on). I do think that I'm a bit bitter that "Marry Me" was ever released as a single and that may play a part in my ranking because I always considered it the weakest point on her Eleven album and it flopped so bad and basically ended her radio days but nothing stays the same I guess I do agree that the two Dave Stewart songs are difficult to rank but there is something I love about both songs and while I do think their voices together is not as good as could be I still like "Every Single Night" and I absolutely LOVE "All Messed Up". His vocals are the weak point imo but overall it still works very well for me. "Chances Are" is one of my biggest surprises of this entire rankdown. Not the biggest though, that definitely comes later as I'll say now at least one song everyone thinks is a lock for top 10 does not make it. As for the album tracks I was so happy to see "A Woman Knows", "I Don't Want To See You Again" and "A Great Disguise" show up. I do enjoy "If I Had Your Name" but I enjoy others way more from that same album that unfortunately do not make the Top 10 Album tracks though they will be seen in the album showcase as they did get votes. "A Great Disguise" was covered by Pam Tillis in 1999 and it is actually a decent cover, not as good as Martina's but still really good. Though technically if you heard her Greatest Hits CD before Wild Angels you would have heard "Strangers" which unfortunately is just an album track that SHOULD have been released, such is the world in which we live. Therefore "A Great Disguise" would be the second album track you heard. Still its one of the first and those always stick with you. The first album of hers I ever heard in full was The Way That I Am as my mom had a cassette of that album in the mid-90's. I listened to it so much. Second album was Evolution, which is easily her best album ever. to end for now, I'll be here tonight to share album tracks #9, 4 more songs tie there also. Album showcase #2 and songs 65 to 61!

I will throw this out there, everyone is going to be shocked with the 'duet' that last the longest... "Valentine"? But really, I hope it's my #6 because I love that song so much. My next highest duet is #36 But maybe it's the Reba song since you put quotes around duet and that's really a collaboration since it's more than 2 people.

But also not sad about anything so far. I love "Marry Me" but Train's version is waaaaaaaaaaaay better. I did not like Martina's cover, despite my #43 rank. I like a lot of these on here, but also dislike a lot of them too.

I'm happy with all of the eliminations so far. I never would've expected "Marry Me" to be the second song out though over a lot of the other duets that were lesser known, but several of those followed directly behind so it's all good... and "Marry Me" is definitely one of her weakest singles of all time and like bboat11 said it had absolutely no business being a single and ruining all her momentum that era. So, so far so good! But also not sad about anything so far. I love "Marry Me" but Train's version is waaaaaaaaaaaay better. I did not like Martina's cover, despite my #43 rank. I like a lot of these on here, but also dislike a lot of them too. More Pat Moanham is always a worse decision, so no.

Sorry, "If I Had Your Name" is my jush. I love it. I have notoriously questionable taste in music though + I only started getting into her album tracks AFTER Greatest Hits, so I expect my album cut picks will be lukewarmly received.

Yay! Another album track I love! ("Two More Bottles Of Wine") Only reason I left it off is because I love Emmylou & Terri's more so I chose to highlight other album tracks from Martina!
Also "Anything's Better Than Feeling The Blues" is just such a great song for her and so different imo! Love it so so much!

Had it on my shortlist of songs to vote for (had WAY too many lol) Same for "Anything's Better Than Feeling the Blues". Martina sounds great and it really is different for her! The Emotion album has so many gems on it, one of her more underrated albums imo

#65 ~ Heart TroubleAlbum: The Way That I Am Track #1 Written by: Paul Kennerley Peak: Hot Country Songs: 21 Points: 778 This was the fourth single released from Martina's 2nd album The Way That I Am and was released right after her signature single "Independence Day". Martina wrote in the liner notes for her Greatest Hits album that she pushed for "Strangers" to be released as a single over this after "Independence Day" but the label never listened to her. Based on the ranks for these two songs I tend to agree that "Strangers" would have been a bigger hit. This single was the only one released from The Way That I Am not to have a music video created for it. "Heart Trouble" was always just so forgettable for me. Enjoyable? Sure but one of her few tracks I don't find myself ever wanting to hear. I'm always surprised it almost made the top 20.

I would've easily tried ABTFTB or "Make Me Believe" or "This Uncivil War" they're all so great!

I could never get into "Heart Trouble". I remember when listening to my mom's cassette of The Way That I Am that I hated when I was on side A and had to listen to this one. Not really sure why either, just something about it I did not like. It is the ONLY song on that album I don't like. Ironically the only other single she has that I really don't like is from my favorite album. Unfortunately for me we will not be seeing that song for a long while...
Up next though 3 people lose a top 30 rank, including myself. The lowest rank for this song is at #68. 3 Others lose a Bottom 10 song!

Yeah I agree with that. While I like all the singles from that album I do think that "From The Ashes", "Anything's Better Than Feeling the Blues", "Make Me Believe" and "This Uncivil War" would have been stronger singles than "It's My Time" and "There You Are". Well you know my list for the singles so you know one of those aren't on my list of two wrong single choices. I would've easily tried ABTFTB or "Make Me Believe" or "This Uncivil War" they're all so great! Oh I know lol however I do have to say that for me both "I Love You" and "Love's The Only House" were a great one-two punch when the album came out. Once "There You Are" came out though the hype around her seemed to just fade. "It's My Time" was just a non-event of a single unfortunately despite the fact that it did well on the charts. Hence why I specifically point those two out but if I went by personal feelings well they are all great songs but only one of the four singles wasn't a good choice. Anyways, don't wanna say too much to spoil my choices but yeah I will get on with typing up #64...

Ah yes in terms of commercial performance and radio reception I do think "There You Are" & "It's My Time" were the wrong choices. For 3rd single if they were going for a ballad then "This Uncivil War" would've been better imo.

Time to catch up again! "By Your Side" There is just something entrancing about this song that I cannot help but succumb to... Everything about it is mesmerizing, with the melody, and the production, and instrumental arrangement, and especially Martina's understated vocal delivery. This is one of those songs that I love to just close my eyes and listen to. No matter what is going on, what the weather is, etc., I hear this song and I am instantly calm and relaxed. One of very few songs that has ever done that for me. "Two More Bottles Of Wine" - Once again, an amazing song. I am a huge fan of the instrumentation here. The epic piano is a major highlight for me. The musical arrangement of this song is just such a throwback '90s sound, that still sounds so fresh coming from Martina. I really wish she would be more adventurous and release more songs that are just uptempo jams like this. You can tell the band had a great time playing this! "Anything's Better Than Feelin' The Blues" - The great songs just keep on coming! This one has continued to grow on me more and more through the years every time I hear it. I just love the quirky lyrics, and the image they paint about the narrator and her somewhat dysfunctional yet totally normal life.

"Heart Trouble" - Called it!!! I agree that this song was never one of my favorites when I first heard the album, but this one has grown on me so much through the years. It just has such a strong '90s groove behind it, which as I mentioned previously is pretty rare for Martina. I still wouldn't call it a favorite by any means, but I no longer skip it, so that's something!
"Trip Around The Sun" - Not really surprised to see this go now either. It is a better song than its placement indicates, imo, but it does have a certain cheese factor to it lyrically, and Jimmy Buffett is a pretty subpar vocalist, so I can definitely see why it went out now.

Ok all this Martina love is just making me so happy right now! Also I'm sad "Trip Around The Sun" is already out. I don't usually like Jimmy but he sounds good here, the song is amazingly well written and Martina just sounds so exquisite to me. It's not even a really tough song but it just works so so well for me. Keep in mind I only ranked it at #36, this rankdown will be so fun because of how much I love Martina's catalogue!
