www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/7833967/katy-perry-witness-no-1-album-billboard-200-chartKaty Perry Scores Third No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Witness'6/18/2017 by Keith Caulfield Katy Perry claims her third No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as her latest release, Witness, debuts atop the list. The set, which was released on June 9 through Capitol Records, earned 180,000 equivalent album units in the week ending June 15, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 162,000 are in traditional album sales. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new July 1-dated chart (where Perry debuts at No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, June 20. Witness follows Perry’s two earlier No. 1s: Prism (in 2013) and Teenage Dream (2010). All three albums debuted atop the list. Prism, her previous studio set, launched with 286,000 in sales (before the chart transitioned to a units-based ranking in December of 2014). Perry’s bow of 180,000 units is the biggest week for an album by a woman in 2017, and the largest since Lady Gaga’s Joanne started at No. 1 with 201,000 units on the chart dated Nov. 12, 2016. Witness also logs the largest sales week for an album by a woman since Joanne (170,000). As Perry’s Witness follows Halsey’s Hopeless Fountain Kingdom at No. 1, the Billboard 200 has back-to-back No. 1s by women for the first time in more than a year. It last happened on the April 2 and April 9, 2016-dated lists, when Rihanna’s Anti and Gwen Stefani’s This Is What the Truth Feels Like held court, respectively. Further, Perry is just the second woman to lead the Billboard 200 in 2017 (after Halsey), and the fifth woman to be No. 1 in the past 12 months. (In that same span of time, 16 men and 10 male-dominated groups have topped the chart.) At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. is a non-mover with 69,000 units (down 5 percent). The former No. 1 album has yet to leave the top three positions of the chart during its nine weeks on the list. Buzzed-about singer/songwriter SZA nets her first top 10 album with the arrival of her debut full-length studio effort, Ctrl, at No. 3. It bows with 60,000 units, of which 25,000 are in traditional album sales. The set was powered by streams, as the title earns 33,000 SEA units (equating to 49.52 million streams for the songs on the album). The remainder of its 60,000-start is comprised of TEA (2,000 units). Ctrl is SZA’s second top 40-charting effort, following the No. 39 peak of her mixtape Z back in 2014. At No. 4, country trio Lady Antebellum notches its seventh top 10 album, as its new studio effort Heart Break launches with 53,000 units (47,000 in traditional album sales). The act’s last release, 2014’s 747, flew in at No. 2 in October of that year with 74,000 copies sold in its first week. The group also reached the top 10 with Golden (No. 1 in 2013), the holiday album On This Winter’s Night (No. 8, 2012), Own the Night (No. 1, 2011), Need You Now (No. 1, 2010) and its self-titled debut (No. 4, 2008). Drake’s More Life climbs one spot to No. 5 on the new Billboard 200 (a little more than 41,000 units; down 3 percent) and Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) also rises a rung to No. 6 ( 41,000 units; up 1 percent). Halsey’s Hopeless Fountain Kingdom slides from No. 1 to No. 7 in its second week, earning slightly more than 33,000 units (down 68 percent). Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic rises two positions to No. 8 with 33,000 units (up 2 percent). Rock band Rise Against clocks the fourth and final debut in the top 10, as its new album Wolves arrives at No. 9 with 29,000 units (27,000 in traditional album sales). It’s the fifth top 10 set for the act, following The Black Market (No. 3 in 2014), Endgame (No. 2, 2011), Appeal to Reason (No. 3, 2008) and The Sufferer & The Witness (No. 10, 2006). Closing out the new top 10 is Post Malone’s Stoney, which rises 12-10 with 29,000 units (up less than 1 percent). Lastly, three albums that were in the top 10 a week ago fall off the chart entirely. The Epic AF compilation, the Summer Latin Hits 2017 compilation, and All Time Low’s Last Young Renegade move from Nos. 3, 8 and 9, respectively, to off the chart. The latter title earned 4,000 units in the latest tracking week (down 88 percent), but that point total was not enough to keep the album on the chart. As for the two compilations, they move off the list following a revision to how our consumption-based album charts rank various artists titles. Now, most various artists compilation albums will only be able to chart on the Billboard 200 and other consumption-ranked album charts based on traditional album sales. Track equivalent album (TEA) units and/or streaming equivalent album (SEA) units will no longer contribute to a various artists’ album ranking and unit count. In the latest tracking week, neither Epic AF or Summer Latin Hits 2017 sold enough in traditional album sales to rank on the Billboard 200. Some various artists titles will continue to earn TEA and SEA: thematic multi-artist compilation albums which contain tracks specifically recorded for that project , like The Hamilton Mixtape, We Love Disney and some charity albums like Cover Stories: Brandi Carlile Celebrates 10 Years of The Story. In addition, soundtracks and cast recordings will continue to receive TEA and SEA as applicable.

A fairly significant rule change:
"Lastly, three albums that were in the top 10 a week ago fall off the chart entirely. In the latest tracking week, neither Epic AF or Summer Latin Hits 2017 sold enough in traditional album sales to rank on the Billboard 200."
This means playlist compilations directed specifically at streaming services will no longer impact this chart

Thank goodness, that was the biggest little exploit that was making this chart feel like Hot 100 feat. Some Old Acts. I suppose we can thank Mask Off and Despacito for forming a double-throng of SEA and TEA that made the issue unavoidable.

Regarding the rule change regarding compilations, I think it's only fair that the rule changed for those mostly streaming albums. Why? Compilations that could be bought, such as those from the NOW series have charted only from album sales and didn't benefit from SEAs and TEAs. So in essence, the streaming mostly albums were getting benefited as an exception.
Also, I'm aware that Vessels by Starset fell out of the Billboard 200 after debuting at #5 earlier this year. Anybody know if that the Epic AF dropout from #3 is the biggest ever?

I notice that Billboard didn't mention the Katy Perry ticket/album bundle. They have in the past for The Chainsmokers, Metallica, etc.
Is this simply a bias/label politics thing? Or is there some reason why the bundle didn't count?

^I'm sure the bundle counted. The label may have asked Billboard not to mention it?
Paul Grein may comment on it in his column.

^Agreed. There's no way the album could have gotten the reported pure album sales it got based on what was seen during the week in iTunes.

www.yahoo.com/music/chart-watch-katy-perrys-disappointing-debut-203500490.htmlChart Watch: Katy Perry's Disappointing Debutby Paul Grein Writer, Yahoo Music June 19, 2017 Katy Perry’s fourth major-label album, Witness, enters the Billboard 200 at No. 1, but with sales tallies that are nothing to “roar” about. The album moved 180K in equivalent units in its first week, including 162K in traditional album sales. Perry’s previous studio album, PRISM, sold 286K in trad sales when it debuted in November 2013. Her album before that, Teenage Dream, sold 192K in trad sales when it debuted in September 2010. Witness is Perry’s first album since the Billboard 200 converted to a “multi-metric” formula in late 2014. The new formula incorporates digital track sales and streaming as well as traditional album sales. Witness is Perry’s third consecutive studio album to enter The Billboard 200 at No. 1. But the initial singles from the album haven’t matched the success of the initial singles from Perry’s past albums. The lead singles from each of her first three major-label albums reached No. 1 on the Hot 100. But the lead single Perry’s current album, “Chained to the Rhythm,” peaked at No. 4. Worse, the two follow-up singles that have been released—”Bon Appétit” and “Swish Swish”—have yet to crack the top 40. What’s the problem? After nine years of stardom, it’s the natural arc of a career that sales taper off. Perry’s career peaked with Teenage Dream, which famously became just the second album in history (following Michael Jackson’s Bad) to spawn five No. 1 singles. Perry continues to set records—just not with her new music. More than 49 million fans from 190 countries reportedly tuned in to her Witness livestream in a four-day period last week. In another indication of Perry’s ability to connect on a massive scale, last week she became the first person to reach 100 million Twitter followers. This, too, is a common pattern. Fans may turn out for a concert tour by a veteran artist, but surprisingly few of them will spring for a new album—even though it probably costs less than parking at the concert. Witness enters The Official U.K. Albums Chart at a ho-hum No. 6. Teenage Dream and PRISM both reached No. 1 in that country. The feminist in Perry will take cheer from the following items. On The Billboard 200, Witness displaces Halsey’s hopeless fountain kingdom, which debuted at No. 1 last week. This marks the first time that female solo artists have debuted at No. 1 in back-to-back weeks since October 2015, when Janet Jackson’s Unbreakable and Selena Gomez’s Revival achieved the feat. Look for Lorde’s Melodrama to debut at No. 1 next week. That would mark the first time that female solo artists have debuted at No. 1 in three consecutive weeks since September 2009, when Reba McEntire’s Keep on Loving You, Colbie Caillat’s Breakthrough and Whitney Houston’s I Look to You did this. Top AlbumsKendrick Lamar’s DAMN. holds at No. 2 in its ninth week. The album spent its first three weeks at No. 1. SZA’s debut album, Ctrl, opens at No. 3. This is the highest ranking for the debut album by a female soul singer since Kehlani’s SweetSexySavage opened at No. 3 in February. (This week marks the first time that two female artists have entered the chart inside the top five in the same week since September, when albums by Barbra Streisand and Britney Spears debuted at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively.) Lady Antebellum lands its seventh top 10 album as Heart Break debuts at No. 4. The album enters Top Country Albums at No. 1, displacing Luke Combs’ This One’s for You. This is the trio’s fifth No. 1 country album. Drake’s More Life inches up from No. 6 to No. 5 in its 13th week. It spent its first three weeks on top. Ed Sheeran’s ÷ inches up from No. 7 to No. 6 in its 15th week. It spent its first two weeks at No. 1. Halsey’s hopeless fountain kingdom drops from No. 1 to No. 7 in its second week. Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic jumps from No. 10 to No. 8 in its 30th week. The album has yet to fall out of the top 10. It logged four weeks at No. 2. Rise Against lands its fifth consecutive top 10 album as Wolves debuts at No. 9. Post Malone’s Stoney rebounds from No. 12 to No. 10 in its 27th week. The album has climbed as high as No. 6. Five albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Three of them fall completely off the chart. They are: All Time Low’s Last Young Renegade and a pair of compilations, EPIC AF (Yellow/Pink) and Summer Latin Hits 2017. The compilations fell off the chart because of a change in chart methodology. Starting this week, only traditional sales will count toward the charting of compilations by Various Artists. Two other albums fell out of the top 10, but they remained on the chart. The Beatles’ Sgt. Peppers’ Lonely Hearts Club Band drops from No. 4 to No. 11 in its 197th chart week. The album is No. 1 on Top Catalog Albums for the fourth non-consecutive week. Luke Combs’ This One’s for You drops from No. 5 to No. 33. The Moana soundtrack rebounds from No. 19 to No. 16 in its 30th week. The album peaked at No. 2. Moana logs its 11th week at No. 1 on the Top Soundtracks chart. Lindsey Buckingham/Christine McVie debuts at No. 17. The two stars first cracked the top 20 the week of Sept. 6, 1975 with Fleetwood Mac’s breakthrough album, Fleetwood Mac. The Broadway cast album from Dear Evan Hansen vaults from No. 147 to No. 44 in the wake of the Tony Awards, where the show won six awards, including Best Musical. The album debuted and peaked at No. 8 in February. But you know what? Even with this surge, it’s still behind the cast album of Hamilton (which inches up from No. 26 to No. 25). Hamilton, of course, won Best Musical at the 2016 Tonys. Glen Campbell’s final studio album, Adios, debuts at No. 40. The country legend first cracked the top 40 in April 1968 with By the Time I Get to Phoenix. Metallica’s 1988 album, …And Justice for All, tops the 6 million mark in traditional album sales this week. The band’s following studio album, 1991’s Metallica, is the sales leader since Nielsen began tracking sales in 1991. It has sold 16,594,000 copies in traditional album sales. Coming Attractions: Look for big debuts next week by Lorde’s Melodrama and 2 Chainz’s Pretty Girls Like Trap Music.

Are there any indications or estimates anywhere of what Katy's ticket-bundle number might be? It couldn't have made up almost all of the sales, because it was #1 on iTunes for at least a couple days. Regardless, the overall number isn't all that worrisome, because her albums always start with lower than projected numbers. The thing to worry about is that the singles haven't done well.

"Fans may turn out for a concert tour by a veteran artist, but surprisingly few of them will spring for a new album—even though it probably costs less than parking at the concert." LMAO funny even though everyone knows that streaming also exists It really depends on if the artist is still relevant, as well as how hardcore their fanbase is. Look at the millions who were eagerly waiting to buy/stream More Life and DAMN and anything that Bieber puts out. And I fully expect the next 21P album to do at least a 350k week with how rabid their fanbase is. And Metallica fans will show up in droves to buy their albums.

So 4 albums = 'Veteran Artist' who has to rely on 'oldies' to tour. Good to know. KP is not surprised. There's a reason why she took the AI gig. I don't think she's done yet. She should talk to The Ga and P!nk

^I'm sure the bundle counted. The label may have asked Billboard not to mention it? Paul Grein may comment on it in his column. Billboard doesn't mention bundle anymore in their chart article unless that happened after album release and got huge jump.(metallica) chainsmokers and halsey didn't get the mention too. I guess ticket bundle sales are usually avg 30% of ticket sales. Katy probably had like 90k ticket bundle sales.

I'm not sure anyone would've guessed a year or so ago that Gaga and Katy's album eras would perform so similarly:
Joanne - #1 (201k) Million Reasons - #4 Perfect Illusion - #15 A-Yo - #66
Witness - #1 (180k) Chained to the Rhythm - #4 Swish Swish - #46 Bon Appetit - #59
In fact Gaga has the edge for now, although it remains to be seen if Katy can pull out a bigger single.

To be fair to Lady GaGa, A-YO wasn't sent to radio, unlike Bon Appetit and Swish Swish.

I wonder why they don't impose a recurrent rule for billboard 200 (like 100/100, 200/50 or whatever). I know they have catalog album chart or whatever, but there're a lot of old albums loitering about below top 50 for hundreds of weeks. Why are they okay with that if they seem to flip out over a song's 52+ weeks of stay?

Why are they okay with that if they seem to flip out over a song's 52+ weeks of stay? They had that from 1991 to 2009. Then Michael Jackson spent 6 weeks with the best selling album in the country at his death with an album that was not represented on the chart. So they changed the rule

^I'm sure the bundle counted. The label may have asked Billboard not to mention it? Paul Grein may comment on it in his column. Billboard doesn't mention bundle anymore in their chart article unless that happened after album release and got huge jump.(metallica) chainsmokers and halsey didn't get the mention too. www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/7760506/the-chainsmokers-memories-album-debuts-at-no-1-on-billboard-200Billboard mentioned it for The Chainsmokers, but that WAS two months ago. So it's possible Billboard has stopped mentioning the bundles to appease the labels. It's also possible that there's some bias at play.

I'm not sure how old you are but not many consider Drake, Bieber or even Katy Perry as a veteran artist yet. If the media is than they are still obsessed with what's the newest thing out there. I'm not sure if your point about relevant artists and veteran artists were just combined and i missed understood but only Metallica qualify's for veteran artists. (in my opinion)

www.billboard.com/biz/articles/7841938/billboard-200-chart-moves-glen-campbell-debuts-in-top-40-with-final-album-adiosBillboard 200 Chart Moves: Glen Campbell Debuts in Top 40 With Final Album, 'Adios'By Keith Caulfield | June 22, 2017 Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the latest Billboard 200 chart: — Lindsey Buckingham & Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham / Christine McVie – No. 17 — Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie arrive together in their first duo project, launching at No. 17 with 23,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending June 15, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 22,000 were in traditional album sales. The Buckingham/McVie album surpasses the
chart highs of any of the two artists’ solo projects. Buckingham has gone as high as No. 32 on his own with Law and Order in 1981. McVie scaled to No. 26 in 1984 with her self-titled set. Their album is practically a Fleetwood Mac recording, as it includes contributions from four of the band’s five members: Drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie are also featured on the set, while vocalist Stevie Nicks is absent. The last time those members gathered for a Fleetwood Mac studio album was for 1987’s No. 7-peaking Tango in the Night. — Soundtrack, Trolls - No. 26 — The soundtrack benefits from sale pricing at digital retail, including in the iTunes Store, where it was promoted prominently and featured for $7.99. The album earned 18,000 units (up 24 percent) for the week, with 8,000 of that sum in traditional album sales (up 24 percent). Further, its digital album sales grew 58 percent to 4,000 for the week. (Its physical sales were up too, but by a much smaller amount: 4 percent, lifting the album to a little more than 4,000 physical CDs sold during the tracking frame.) — Taylor Swift, 1989 - No. 31 — Four of Taylor Swift’s studio albums re-enter the chart, following her much-publicized return to all streaming services on June 9. Her highest charting effort on the new chart is her most recent album, 2014’s 1989, which bounces back onto the list at No. 31. The album generated 18.9 million on-demand audio streams for its songs in the tracking week ending June 15. The set returns to list with 16,000 equivalent album units earned (mainly generated from streaming equivalent album units). 1989 was last in the top 40 on June 4, 2016, when it ranked at No. 26. — Glen Campbell, Adios – No. 40 —Adios says hello at No. 40, bowing with 14,000 units – nearly all from traditional album sales. The set is billed as the ailing star’s final album. It was recorded in 2012, a year after it was announced he had Alzheimer’s disease. Adios grants Campbell his 16th top 40 album, while on Top Country Albums (where it bows at No. 7), it’s his 19th top 10 effort. — Original Broadway Cast Recording, Dear Evan Hansen – No. 44 — Following the musical’s six Tony Award wins on June 11, the show’s original Broadway cast recording rockets from No. 147 to No. 44 with 14,000 units (up 155 percent). The album’s sales grew 192 percent – rising from 6,000 to nearly 10,000. In total, sales of cast albums grew 7 percent in the week ending June 15 (rising to 756,000; up from 707,000 in the week previous). Meanwhile, at No. 56, the original Broadway cast recording of Anastasia starts with 11,000 units and 10,000 in album sales. The latter figure is the second-largest sales debut for a cast album in 2017 -- second only to the arrival of Dear Evan Hansen, which launched with 25,000 sold. — Chuck Berry, Chuck - No. 49 — Chuck Berry’s first album of mostly new music since 1979’s Rock It grants the late legend his best sales week (12,000 copies sold in the week ending June 15) since Nielsen Music began tracking sales in 1991. The new effort is Berry’s highest charting album of new music since 1972, when The London Chuck Berry Sessions peaked at No. 8. (That album consisted of five studio recordings and three live tracks. The latter batch of live takes included an 11-minute version of “My Ding-a-Ling,” which hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October of 1972.)
