I wish I'd had more time to really put in proper work on organizing and revealing this rankdown because we could have made a drinking game out of how many times Mariah has referred back to her own lyrics in a later song. We're familiar enough with some of the more overt references like Lullaby, but she'll even get really random/obscure with it. That Babydoll lyric is just an ad-lib, but then it resurfaces in Stay the Night ("You keep saying stay the night/just let me rock you till the morning light"). If the sheer amount of her material weren't so prolific one might almost mistake it for the well running dry but she really just lifts bits and pieces and spins them in other directions, or treats it as a continuing story.

what "Dreamlover" out too? :( Unexpected coincidence - the original and the remix exit their respective rankdowns almost simultaneously. I love it but I always got the impression that its relatively laidback arrangement hindered it from being one of Mariah's more lauded #1s. In contrast, look at the top five #1s that beat it out: Vision of Love, Emotions, Fantasy, Always Be My Baby, and We Belong Together. In a word, legendary.

I was watching some reaction video to the Oprah performance of WYB the other day and the guy (I forget his name) was saying this was his favorite song and the only thing that could have made it even bigger is if Celine had been on it too. IMO that just would have been overkill lmao. But I do wish we would have gotten them on stage one time at an award show or something.
I wanted to love When You Believe so much more than I actually did. Not that the song isn't great regardless but lbr here, considering the sheer amount of iconicness that are Whitney and Mariah's solo discographies, this is somewhat middling material for both of them. I'm not sure what happened; the lyrics are what you would expect of a Disney ballad, the melodies and harmonies glorious and production immaculate. But somehow it just left so many people thinking, "...oh. Thassit?"
Admittedly the two of them created a level of expectation that was going to be impossible to meet. It might have been better if they didn't hype the duet in advance, but just sprang it on people and let everyone be shocked that it actually happened. And they both felt a bit restrained - Whitney could have gone harder and Mariah could have gone higher but it's almost like they both held back out of respect for the other's talent. The other thing though is this was right at the start of both of their vocal deterioration (substance abuse on Whitney's part, and overwork on Mariah's). All of that said, it's a beautiful song that more or less squashed the rivalry rumors and in fact created a friendship that lasted until Whitney's death.
A year later, Brandy sought out Monica for a duet under similar intentions. She thought it would be a great way to capitalize on the rumors of their rivalry and end it at the same time. I'm sure Brandy was purposely trying to copy her mentor, but ironically her situation turned out the exact opposite in almost every possible way. Mariah and Whitney actually had to be tricked into agreeing to the duet (both of them were scared of being rejected and said "I'll only do it if she says she'll do it" so Babyface had to lie and say 'oh yeah of course she said she'll do it!" lol). Where WYB was a soundtrack single that underperformed relative to Whitney and Mariah's standards, The Boy Is Mine went on to be a lead album single and career-defining smash for both Brandy and Monica, who were still establishing themselves as young r&b stars. And where Whitney and Mariah became fast friends, Brandy and Monica's rivalry was cemented once they met and immediately discovered that they couldn't stand each other.

Just a couple of comments: - Dreamlover: cute song but just not as strong as most of her #1s for me. It reached #4 in my personal chart. - When You Believe: well, I purposely over-ranked it a bit because I assumed it was gonna be penalized around here it would've have still been in my top 10 though. What can I say, I really dig inspirational Mariah and this is another song that along with Hero I've used several times to lift up my spirit in tough moments where hope was frail at the same time, I really liked it when it was first released, as I actually enjoyed their not turning this into a screamfest but more of a tender but powerful song with just a bit of melisma and strength from both. This was another multi-week chart topper for me. Unabashedly proud :)

Everyone's top-ranked songs have lingered on a good while in this 100-song rankdown, but tomorrow we see back-to-back #1 losses with #33 and #32. Whose favorite release is about to be foiled? *cue suspenseful music*
(Side bar, only 14 songs received a #1 rank from anyone)

Dreamlover: One of her best songs and I'm glad it got as far as it did.
When You Believe: You would think a duet between Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey would have almost the same type of commercial and critical success as OSD, but I guess not. Still a great song though.

No no no! Dreamlover Def Club Mix Is sheer Perfection! And not even just House sheer perfection because it is that. But Mariah's vocal sheer perfection as well. She's singing her ass off people! What on Earth are you doing?!

It's time for Migraine to go...BYE! Oddly enough, it seems you hate it even more than I do - double the hate, in fact. LOL. Truth: I LOVE the lyrics and the opener but...that's about it. It's just so basic. When it comes to Mariah basic trending-hopping bops, Thirsty did it WAY better.

Babydoll dropped out at 40?!! Behind When You Believe, Migrate and Say Something' ?!!! This song is pure perfection...the lyrics, the flow, the bass line, the smooth vocals, the BVs, the ad-libs, the low notes - we need a recount!

Something about subtlety in how Mariah placed the 'why don't you' ad-lib at the end so that she's simultaneously saying 'why don't you let it all fade away' and 'why don't you fade away' gets me every time.

We open off the top 30 with yet another #1 loss, and a song that I am constantly forgetting was never a single.

Whenever You Call has the fourth-highest low rank in this countdown, but didn't get enough higher ranks to boost it ahead of other songs that were more polarizing but stronger fan favorites. I've personally always thought this was a great ballad, albeit not an immediate go-to.
