According to Wikipedia, WISX 106.1 Philadelphia changed from Hot AC to classic hip hop at noon today.

All Access says "the station will play a variety of Hip-Hop, R&B and Rhythmic music from the ‘90s and early 2000s."

I expect them to expand that time span eventually. It seems that 1985-2009 is the sweet spot.

Talk about oversaturation. Anyway, I like the Classic Hip-Hop format. Current hip-hop is trash. Give me the previous three decades, please.

There was an article I read a few years ago that talked about a US radio station that did something like this, and it saw a big increase in audience. I can't remember the exact details unfortunately, but they hypothesized it could be a viable route for future radio stations. So maybe we'll start to see "Hip hop AC" kind of stations become more common in the 2020s.

The classic hip hop format has been around since 2004 with 93.5 KDAY Los Angeles as the first station to play old school hip hop 24/7 but decided to become 93.5 The Beat with syndicated radio shows in 2008 but a year later (August 17, 2009) KDAY decides to reinstate the classic hip hop. I’ve noticed that KDAY is going after people who are into hip hop but don’t listen to Power 106 anymore.

They tried to recreate The Beat following 100.3's flip to Urban AC, but it just wasn't the same.

Speaking of Philly- WOGL, 98.1, re-branded itself as Big 98.1 recently. Still plays '80s, though now touts itself as '90s, too (I woul hear the occasional '90s song on there, but more now). it's even extended into the 2000s, though- heck, I even heard "Moves Like Jagger" on there.

I miss the days when WOGL was a 60s and 70s station. After Big Ron died (I think it was in 2007, may have been 2008), the station slowly but surely started going into the crappers. I really miss Big Ron’s forgotten 45 segment, as well as the Top 9 at 9 countdowns Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday, and the Top 20 countdown every Wednesday night. Not to mention, the American Top 40 countdown with Casey Kasem every Saturday morning. The last time this station was any good was in 2015.

^It does play America's Greatest Hits on Saturday mornings. And, it still gets some '70s hits in there, at least (heard "Brick House" today, for instance). But I am not a fan of hearing stuff like "Moves Like Jagger," I can tall ya that.
