I'm really surprised response to this has been so negative. Apart from the chorus this song is pretty incredible to me. I understand the criticism of the chorus but still don't find the shrillness to be as deal breaking as many people are making it out to be. Is she really more shouty here than she has been in many of her songs in the past? TBH I think better production choices (both vocal and instrumental) on the chorus couldn't saved it. People are being negative because Demi hasn't had a radio hit for a couple years. Or... it's because the song isn't good. That seems much more likely. Especially since most people in here are praising her last single, "Body Say," which was released one year ago. Not to mention, her last radio hit was last winter. "Confident" isn't "a couple years" old. It peaked at number nine on pop radio in January 2016.

This is a hard pass for me. I have absolutely no desire to hear this again. This is unfortunate because like almost everybody else, I thought Body Say was excellent. I wish she went in that type of direction instead.

This girl is a terrible singer. I can't get through 30 seconds of any of her songs. She is actually a very capable singer. It's her material people are lukewarm with. I agree. Like Tori Kelly.

Agree with being late to the party completely with this but at least it's doing well on iTunes so far. Curious to see what the rest of the album will sound like but yeah, definitely one of weakest singles, if not her actual weakest.

She is actually a very capable singer. It's her material people are lukewarm with. I agree. Like Tori Kelly. Wha? Demi Lovato has had hit records - "Give Your Heart A Break," "Heart Attack," "the moderately successful "Neon Lights" and "Really Don't Care." And she had a hit with "Cool for the Summer." "Confident" also managed top 20 on the Hot 100. Tori Kelley hasn't been anywhere near the first half of the Hot 100, nor has she had a major chr hit. Tori Kelly WISHES she was Demi Lovato. Fuck, Tori Kelly wishes she was Rita Ora or Bleta Rexha even. Tori Kelly wishes she was Tori Spelling! There! I said it!

But you make it sound like it was eons ago since her last hit, which it wasn't, and that everyone here hates her now because of that reason, which is absolutely ridiculous. But of course you failed to acknowledge that part of my post.

I think another thing is that her singles catalog is essentially tracks that did well on radio, but did so in spite of underwhelming callout, with consistently substandard performance in other metrics. CFTS shot up to #1 on iTunes, plummeted out, and never regained well enough to get into the top 10 of the Hot 100 (yes, it was #11, almost there, bla bla my point still stands). On its own it's not that big of an issue for a track here and there. but it's her entire singles output over the years. Neon Lights a few years back in particular had an extremely poor iTunes showing for song that did as well on CHR. Now with Streaming in the mix too, it's an even bigger issue that she can't connect well outside of radio programmers. She's known enough, has a core base, inoffensive material, and a marketable story, but after a certain point, you need to have shown that you can hit it out of the park to justify all this push. There's an extent to which the powers that be are going to continue blowing smoke up your ass if you don't deliver, and she's eventually going to get there. She might already be depending on how this does.

This is pretty bad. It sounds a lot like Bang Bang, right down to the yelling. So dated that it sounds like it was recorded around the same time, too.
Cool for the Summer was great and Body Say was good enough.

She might already be depending on how this does. In complete agreement. She just DOES NOT connect. And I'm honestly not sure what she can do to fix it. If Miley, Katy or Rihanna had sang any of her hit singles, they would have been infinitely bigger and probably all gone top 5. She's not totally unlikable, she's just kinda... there. Like what is her persona, what is her brand? I just don't get anything from her and it's eventually going to catch up with her if it hasn't already.

Although "Give Your Heart A Break" had a great sales response, and radio took forever to get on it...sales essentially forced radio to play that one - and then it grew. But the rest of the time, it seems radio took to the more recent songs better than sales. And she has had flops - "Made in the USA," "Stone Cold," and "Body Say" (although that one wasn't promoted).

Heard it on the radio. Sounds pretty typical but not bad. It's going to need an extreme amount of luck to become a hit.

I might get some shit for saying this, but keep in mind that I really enjoyed her "Demi" album and that "Heart Attack", "Skyscraper", and "Cool For The Summer" are three of my favorite pop songs this decade, so I am by no means a hater.
However, I feel like she has no idea what she wants to be. Unbroken, outside of the two hit singles which were very pop, were very pop/urban and Rihanna-inspired, Demi was a straight up pop album, and I don't know what the hell Confident was supposed to be, and now she's doing this tropical pop song that's OBVIOUSLY attempting to chase the trend? I can respect variety in someone's catalogue, but aside from "Cool For The Summer" and "Stone Cold", nothing she has done has felt authentic to me since 2013.

Kinda irritates my ears at certain points. There's some sort of scratchy/fuzzy noise during the chorus which I could do without. Wish the production was a little lower so I could hear Demi more clearly. Not a fan of this.

I feel like the production and producers for both artists could be better. Especially for how good their voices are.

Not as good as "Cool for the Summer" or "Body Say", which I loved, but it will probably grow on me.
I know it wasn't really promoted, but I still can't believe "Body Say" flopped as badly as it did. I guess radio can't prop up all of her singles, though. Her history is confusing. She always seems to get a strong response initially and then no one really cares. I thought she might finally break through with CFTS, but that didn't happen, and I don't see this doing it either.

I love love LOVE Demi, especially almost all her singles minus only Stone Cold But this downright is super underwhelming, the chorus vocals is really off-putting, and it really does sound dated Easily my least favorite single and maybe one of my least faved songs from her overall
