I don't think that's the reason. New music seems to come out any day of the week now, and they could always release the music just in those territories once it hits Friday.

Sure, but I can't believe there are that many people getting the song via Australia/New Z that it's worth releasing early in the U.S. Why not just hold off a half day? Die-hard fans are usually going to legally download regardless, and casual fans aren't checking out new releases in Australia.

Do I think it will debut in the top 10? No. I think it may debut in the top 40 at best, but unless it gets big sales or good radio airplay, (It actually took a dip in radio on the 14th) I don't think it will be a big hit.

There's no reason that the American artist can't wait until it is Friday in their homeland, which just so happens to be the largest music industry in the world, to release the song worldwide. 11:00pm EST on Thursday (when a song would be released in the US) is still 5:00pm on Friday in New Zealand. Not to mention that there's nothing wrong with releasing as Friday hits in every country. Sure, the US would be last and it would incite a higher spike of piracy in the first 24 hours of release, but it really isn't much of a loss in the long run, especially when most people consume music through streaming anyway.

What's happening is that artists are trying to jump ahead of the release day so all of the focus is on them. If you release on Friday, you get lumped with all of the other songs/albums released that day. Release a day or two earlier? Now you're the only one and all of the focus is on you. Plus, with surprise releases becoming a more common thing, I'm sure some artists are releasing a day or two earlier to avoid getting lost in the shuffle of a high profile surprise release.
