Let's talk about Charlie Puth.
You probably don't know who Charlie Puth is, even though he's one of the biggest pop stars out there, he doesn't make much of an impact. But I'll refresh your memory, around 2 years ago Puth was featured on Wiz Khalifa's massive hit "See You Again," which honestly, I never liked. The song was kind of a little too slow, not enough build up. What I'm trying to say is that it was very mediocre, which is what Puth's discography consists of. Droning mediocre slock fests with nothing to offer. "Marvin Gaye" is probably his most memorable song to date, and that's because of how bad it is.
Anyways, now that we have established who Charlie Puth is, let's talk abouut his most recent song today "Attention," which has reached as far as #15 on the Hot 100 and is still climbing. And I have to say, my first impression of this song is that it's really good. I'm not joking, "Attention" has some of the best, tightest and grooviest production in a pop song I have ever heard. Damn that bass is catchy as hell, it reminds me a lot of Maroon 5 before "Moves Like Jagger."
....But then we get to the lyrics, and oh boy, this song gets very very annoying. t's basically Puth whining about his ex lover who is talking s**t about him everywhere she goes cuz she just wants Attention.
"You've been runnin' round, runnin' round, runnin' round throwin' that dirt all on my name."
"I know that dress is karma, perfume regret. You got me thinking 'bout when you were mine."
"You just want attention, you don't want my heart. Maybe you just hate the thought of me with someone new."
Uhu. You see, these kind of songs don't really work for me because I don't have both perspectives, which is a s**tty way to listen to music but I don't care. The reason songs like Drake's "Too Good" and Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know" work is because they show the full picture, both sides of the situation are shown. This song is basically Gotye without Kimbra. It's hard to sympathize with Puth if I don't know the girls perspective, she could be walking on sunshine and rainbows for all we know.
"You've been runnin' round, runnin' round, runnin' round throwin' that dirt all on my name."
I love how he talks s**t about her talking s**t. Isn't that ironic?
Here's another lyric I have an issue with.
"And now I'm all up on ya, what you expect?"
Puth talks all this crap about her wanting Attention and not wanting his love, yet he gives her attention. It doesn't matter if she doesn't really love him, she can just waltz back into his life and he'll take her back. Then he'll complain about her again and the cycle repeats. If the only thing she wants is attention, then stop giving her attention, easy. Also, writing a hit song about her, no matter how bad it portrays her, IS giving her attention. So the entire song fails in that sense.
I would talk more about the song, but there isn't really a second verse. The song basically repeats, which is typical for pop music. Even though the lyrics are not the best, I think the main issue with the song is Puth honestly. Like I said before, he is not an interesting performer at all, his voice is not unique and he does nothing for the song. Give it to Bruno Mars or The Weeknd and it would be so much better. There's a lot of wasted potential here, this song is begging for a better performer.
I'll be frank, "Attention" isn't horrible. It's way better than that Migos crap that's been popular all year, but it's just kind of mediocre like the rest of Puth's discography. The production is spectacular, but everything else is a bore. Overall, not a great song but not a horrible song. Just a lot of disappointment.
5/10.
