I wouldn't really say that. Nicki's songs were very pop-leaning and she got backlash from it. Eminem only did as well as he did on Pop radio thanks to Rihanna. Beyonce's I Am...Sasha Fierce is her most pop album. Usher was releasing pop songs as well. Usher's "OMG"/"Dj Got Us Falling In Love"/"Without You" were bang on the dance/pop trend. I didn't have internet back in the early-mid 00s when R&B/Hip-hop was dominating so can't really comment on that (I'm from the UK). Pop is playing a good range of songs. "Body Like A Back Road"/"Believer"/"Wild Moments"/"Stay"/"Unforgettable"/"Redbone"/"Versace on the Floor"/"That's What I Like"/"Castle on the Hill"/"Mi Gente"/"Despacito". Good range of songs there - Rock, Latin, R&B, Hip-hop, country, dance/electronic & pop/AC (likely more genres covered than I've highlighted). I'm surprised "Redbone" and "Believer" are doing so well on pop radio. I don't think either would have been touched a few years ago. Nah. Actually, Eminem got played on the radio at the time because of how big he was in the 2000s and because of his appeal with audiences at the time, not Rihanna. Not Afraid was played on pop radio before Love The Way You Lie, and that was without Rihanna (The Monster, however, was definitely because of Rihanna, by then his popularity among the pop crowd had fallen off). Being a white rapper also helps. Also, rap and R&B was constantly crossing over during the early and mid-2000s, but there was definitely some pop and rock in between, so diversity wasn't lacking in the 2000s. The pop stations are still reluctant to play anything that isn't from their genre regardless of how big they get (which is frustrating), but at least they're more diverse than they were at the beginning of the decade. The part about Eminem is incorrect. Before Love the Way You Lie, Eminem had not had a top ten hit in pop airplay in 5 years. Also, Not Afraid only got significant airplay on pop thanks to Love the Way You Lie. LTWYL peaked on pop one week before Not Afraid did. From 2000-2005, Eminem was a fairly big name in pop airplay, but in the years between that and LTWYL, he had lost his status as an appealing artist to pop radio listeners. (That eventually happens to everybody, so it's not a bad thing.) In fact, since 2005, Eminem's only top ten pop hits were the two with Rihanna and one with Bruno Mars. wweb.uta.edu/faculty/gghunt/charts/eminem.html

I had no idea. Who was it? And link maybe? david dobrik used it in "Girlfriend surprises me for 21st birthday!" I only know about it bc the music video for fill it still is flooded with "Like if David sent you!!" Just looked it up and a load of comments also say they were sent by Zoella and Alfie. Is it possible the band is paying these YouTube stars to use it for promo? If so that is really smart

Is today a holiday in the US? Did I miss some Tweet in which they said there would be no stream today? Because Gary didn't even confirm it like he always does on Mondays.

lol. it's like billboard saw the uk chart going down the gutters with it's new rules and they want to make sure they stay 'the' mess chart in the world What happened with the UK charts? they implement rules that basically makes the #1 song in both sales and streaming ranks at #2 in the official overall chart last week. and that's only the beginning of it.

^ There's been controversy over whether free streams from his album on Tidal should count towards the Billboard 200, since they were "in front of the paywall"

Hopefully BB is changing their Hot 100 formula to make the chart less stagnant. It's always the same old songs in the top 10. And it's largely due to these super-old songs that stick around way past their peak due to streaming.
The UK chart is brilliant! They changed the streaming ratio for older tracks that are way past their peak to make space for newer releases. Billboard should do the same thing. If a song is over ~20 weeks old and past its peak, then streaming ratio should be reduced.

Why single out streaming though? Radio is also a big contributor to stagnancy, as evidenced by songs like Scars to Your Beautiful sticking around for way past their sales/streaming runs. Either go all the way arbitrary or come off as a curmudgeon wanting to delegitimize the new dominant format.

Yes, UK chart is so brilliant that the #1 song in both sales and streaming is not #1 on the chart. Brilliant.
