"LMK" sounds like such a smash. It has crossover written all over it.

"LMK" sounds like such a smash. It has crossover written all over it. If radio worked the way it did 10-15 years ago, it would be massive. It's an outstanding song that I'll have in personal rotation for a long time, but I can't picture it on today's radio.

It sounds exactly like an R&B hit would in 2017 if R&B were a commercially viable genre... but it's not.

Really? I don't find "LMK" to be that R&B quite frankly, it's incredibly pop. I think any artist with an ounce of weight at pop radio could make this a hit. Unfortunately, she's indie with no machine behind her, so of course it's never going to happen. But it sounds like a crossover smash to me.

It certainly has a pop flair, but what was the last song by a woman (sadly that seems to matter in 2017) this R&B-leaning to hit on pop radio? Rihanna, I guess, but it's pretty dry beyond that...

Rihanna is the only "R&B" female artist who can still have a top 10 pop hit, but she A.) doesn't fly straight to #1 like she one did and B.) isn't really R&B anyway. She's less pure pop than she once was, but she's still kknown as a pop star.

But it's obviously an entirely different situation.

This is straight up Alternative R&B. It's been bubbling under the radar since about 2011. SZA may have just kicked the door down on a mainstream level with Ctrl
Miguel, SZA, Janelle Monae, Solange, Jhene Aiko, Nao, R.Lum.R, Tinashe (when she's not doing Pop), JMSN, Jorgia Smith, etc.....it's a legit market that's just now being seriously tapped into.

My first time hearing her was on the new Gorillaz song and I played LMK but never went back to it until I listened to it in the context of the album. But yeah, what an amazing song. The whistle register she uses at the end is cute. The production on this album overall is insane. Enough is a little too busy for me but it's still really cool. The layering on Better is just beautiful. Overall, very strong debut.

The production on this album overall is insane. This! Love the overall record. Onanon is euphoric. I want her to get a Grammy nom so badly. Her and this record deserve that at minimum.

I like about half of this album. Great production value on most of the tracks. Her voice reminds me of a mix of Chilli of TLC and Dawn Richard.

Waitin gets me out of my seat every time it comes on. One of those blast at full volume with headphones kinda jams.

She announced a Take Me Apart remix album dropping soon.
A remix for "LMK" featuring Princess Nokia, Junglepussy, and cupakKe is already out.

Take Me Apart didn't quite do it for me, at least in the way her debut "mixtape" did, but, no exaggeration, LMK is one of the best pop songs of the decade and certainly the best of last year. One of my favorite tracks she's ever done was a remix of a Holy Other song. For some reason, it seems to not be available anywhere but my barely operating tumblr. So, if you're interested...

Huge shout out the bridge on “Take Me Apart”.
“Truth or Dare” is also heavily Janet influenced. I love this album.

“Truth or Dare” is also heavily Janet influenced. I love this album. Definitely. That, "Better," "Onanon," and "LMK" remain my four favorites roughly one year later, all with various Janetesque elements shining through. One of my favorite tracks she's ever done was a remix of a Holy Other song. For some reason, it seems to not be available anywhere but my barely operating tumblr. So, if you're interested...That's beautiful! As much as I do enjoy the more polished Take Me Apart, I miss vintage Kelela for sure. One of my favorite Kelela songs is still "EFX" with Tenngirl Fantasy that you introduced me to a million years ago. Speaking of old collaborators though, this was released somewhat recently:

One of my favorite Kelela songs is still "EFX" with Tenngirl Fantasy that you introduced me to a million years ago. Still listen to Keep it Cool, Cut 4 Me, Floor Show & Send Me Out on the regular. Ugh, EFX. Brings back such nice yet complicated memories for me. But I was absolutely hooked on her voice.

Another wonderful album from Kelela. This album didn’t grab me quite like her previous one on the first listen, but I’m glad I gave it a second and third chance. Now I’m hooked.
“On The Run” is the only “pop” song here but it’s pure perfection. My other favorites are “Contact” and “Missed Call.”
Seems this has had a very quiet release compared to 2017, despite her first Fallon appearance etc.
