It came prior to her commercial breakout with 'Fancy', so while it was her first single to make the ARIA top 50 it did not perform well (unlike the UK where it was her first top 10). It spent a single week on the ARIA chart before falling off, and it did not chart on the Hot 100 in the US. James ditches his #80, which leaves Normusic as the sole holdout to ditch his bottom-ranked song. MY THOUGHTS: I don't mind this song, but it's also not one I was super into. I know Iggy has her detractors (which can be seen in some of this song's rankings) but I didn't think this song had the potential to go a long way anyway. So all the normal red flags be a good sign"RELEASED: February 24th, 2015 Released as the second single from Iggy's debut album re-release 'Reclassified', 'Trouble' featuring Jennifer Hudson showed a marked slide in Iggy's success and support in the US. In Australia meanwhile, the song managed to become her second (and currently, last) top 10 hit despite all promotional efforts being spent on its Billboard performance instead of any local promo. While never being majorly successful on her home soil, further releases garnered less and less returns for the Aussie-born rapper. MY THOUGHTS: Again, I don't mind this song but like 'Change Your Life' I don't love it either. I do like 'Trouble' a little bit more than the other one though, which is why it ended up a little higher on my list. You won't get rid of me, rid of me, yeah"RELEASED: July 15th, 2011 Jessica Mauboy's sophomore album 'Get 'Em Girls' suffered from underwhelming commercial performance with its previous singles failing to live up to the success of her debut era. To counter this, Sony Music Australia re-packaged the album as a deluxe edition with additional material. 'Inescapable' was one of the newly-added songs, and was chosen as the lead single for the re-release after previously missing the cut for the original album. It became the biggest hit of the era with a top 5 peak and a 2x Platinum certification. It is also notable for being the only single out of five not to feature a guest artist (incidentally, the guest artists on the other singles were all male). MY THOUGHTS: This is a good song, and because I feel like Jess has greater name recognition (at least for someone whose career has been bound mainly to Australia) this would have done better. Can I get a blackout?"RELEASED: June 13th, 2014 After winning Australia's Got Talent at the age of 12, Bonnie Anderson took time to grow up, develop herself as a performer and a songwriter, and experience being a kid before seriously committing to a career in music. Debut single 'Raise The Bar' got her foot in the door, but 'Blackout' was the single to get her onto the charts. The song was not a runaway success however, and follow-up singles have failed to do any chart damage. The single and its video are notable for displaying a much more grown up image in contrast to the little girl with the big voice who appeared on AGT. MY THOUGHTS: Bonnie is another underappreciated artist I've come to like, and it doesn't hurt that she's friends and collaborators with my fave lol. I'm sad she hasn't blown up, and I'm also sad this song didn't do better (this is going to be a running theme lmao - songs I love that just don't get traction in this game). Whatever it takes I will do what I gotta do"RELEASED: February 5th, 2010 'On A Mission' was released as the lead single from Gabriella Cilmi's second album 'Ten', marking a change in sound from the vintage soul and pop sounds of her debut to a more electronic style. The song samples/re-creates the bassline from the Joe Jackson song 'Steppin' Out', most notable in the song's intro. The music video was inspired by the 1968 sci-fi film 'Barbarella'. Different remixes exist featuring guest artists, including one featuring American rapper Eve. The song was Gabriella's second top 20 hit in Australia, and her second UK top 10. This would be her final hit, with the 'Ten' era failing, and Gabriella later leaving her label to go independent. MY THOUGHTS: I don't mind this song that much, but that's mainly due to its dance remixes. Otherwise I don't particularly care for Gabriella as an artist. There's one other song of hers I like, but her big hit ('Sweet About Me') is a song I hate. Had Gabriella made the list she probably would have been somewhere in the middle of the pack at best. It was the most successful of all 'Secret Daughter'-related tracks to be released, although the parent soundtrack was not as successful as the preceding set. The song unfortunately stopped just short of the top 10 on the ARIA singles chart despite a strong iTunes presence. It was later nominated for three ARIA Awards, two of which were fan-voted. MY THOUGHTS: In hindsight I really should have put this on the main list, at the time I was determining what to include it hadn't made much of an impression on me but it's since grown on me. It would have ranked well for me, probably in my top 20. Ain't no broken pride and these aren't paper cuts"RELEASED: July 8th, 2016 ‘Papercuts’ was released as the lead single from Australian rapper Illy’s fifth studio album ‘Two Degrees’. It features guest vocals from 3rd place The Voice season 2 runner-up Celia Pavey under her stage name Vera Blue. The song ranked at #7 on Triple J’s Hottest 100 list for 2016, and the attention garnered from its placement on that list helped drive it it become the biggest chart hit for both artists. MY THOUGHTS: This is a song that I wasn’t familiar with beforehand, but one I’d always intended on including for the sake of Aussie hip-hop representation and diversity. I was surprised to find out who Vera Blue was because I hated her on The Voice lol, but I didn’t mind her on this song (possibly because it was a different vibe from what I’d have expected from her. As for Illy, this is the only song of his I know, and it suffered a little on my list from the amount of songs here that I enjoy more. During the first half of submissions it looked like this was going to end up higher but even among not-widely-known-outside-Australia pop music, hip hop can’t catch a break. It's gonna be alright, it's gonna be okay"RELEASED: July 17th, 2012 A year after releasing her debut single ‘We Run The Night’ in her home territory, DJ Havana Brown finally released her first EP full of original music (she is known in Australia for her ‘Crave’ series of albums, which are DJ compilations mixed by Havana herself). While the US got the Pitbull-assisted RedOne remix of ‘We Run The Night’, Australia received ‘You’ll Be Mine’ as the EP’s lead single. The EP charted on the singles chart rather than the albums chart, meaning that the single couldn’t chart as an individual track (later single ‘Big Banana’ however, was allowed to chart separately). MY THOUGHTS: Havana has released other singles that I enjoy more, but I don’t think this is a bad song. I do think the EP charting on singles instead of albums was silly, but this comes down to the record labels, as Havana is not the only artist this happened to. Aside from ‘We Run The Night’ (which I will always prefer the More Mega original over the RedOne remix) her album holds up better for me than the material from the EP. I’m ready to carry on, carry on"RELEASED: June 10th, 2013 During the first two seasons of The Voice AUS, the final four contestants would each get the opportunity to perform an original composition. ‘Love Is Gone’ is the song that eventual second season runner-up Luke Kennedy performed; a song he’d co-written with the indie pop band PocketLove, of whom he was a former member. Due to the nature of the song being a Voice performance, it spent only a single week on chart. The song was written about Luke’s ex-wife and the breakdown of their marriage leading to their eventual divorce. Oh girl, we got gold"RELEASED: May 11th, 2012 Guy Sebastian released ‘Gold’ as the second single from his 7th studio album ‘Armageddon’ in 2012; it got off to a slow start when released, and Sony Music Entertainment (Guy’s label) actually prevented it from charting until it could secure a good position. As such, it was not allowed to chart until the week it debuted and peaked at #10. There was controversy around the song due to featured artist Carmen Smith, a long-time backing singer for Guy. While uncredited on the track, her vocals are prominently featured and she appears in the music video. At the time of its release however, Carmen was a contestant on the debut season of The Voice, which actually got her disqualified from after she successfully reached the top 24. It was deemed that her presence on an active single by a major Australian artist would give her an unfair advantage over the other contestants, hence her disqualification. MY THOUGHTS: I’m not a big fan of Guy, but I don’t mind this song either - and I felt it was a good inclusion to this list since there was a story to tell with it, beyond ‘this is [X] song by [Y] artist, released from [Z] album’. Carmen wasn’t my favourite artist on Joel Madden’s team, so I have no real feelings toward her disqualification (although for the record I do think it made sense and I agree with the logic). Guy was quick to drag Carmen around everywhere promoting the song though, so she did get a lot of free promo and exposure out of the incident I guess lol. It was his second single, released just a few months after his debut single ‘Borrow My Heart’. Because his debut album was a typical talent show winner’s album comprised of studio versions of his X Factor performances, the turnaround between albums was a mere 7 months. The song became his third top 5 hit (including one of his X Factor performances) and also his last hit-to-date after further singles failed to reach the same levels of success. MY THOUGHTS: I haven’t paid much attention to Taylor in general, I didn’t watch his season of The X Factor. This song is pleasant though, but for me it was just another casualty of all the artists/songs I enjoy more. The single also found limited crossover success in Europe, although a reported US push never materialised. Following his win Isaiah was selected to represent Australia in the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest in Kiev, Ukraine where he brought Australia their third consecutive top 10 placement since debuting in 2015. Originally intended as the lead single from her fourth studio album ‘Dance In The Rain’, the single didn’t light the charts on fire and when the album was finally released in late 2014 the song was excluded from the final track listing. The video was co-directed by Ricki herself, and is notable for its level of risque far beyond what Ricki had done before, including topless women and Ricki herself appearing nude and covered in gold body paint. This song has the third highest standard deviation in the game. MY THOUGHTS: This deserved so much better, both on the charts and in this rankdown. This is a strong, catchy pop song which was bang on trend, and had any of your US pop divas done this song it would have been an international smash. This is also easily the best music video Ricki has ever made, from the styling to the colours and she is serving a tonne of looks. Shame on ya’ll! The same mistake again"RELEASED: September 17th, 2010 ‘Mistakes’ was released as the third single from Brian McFadden’s third album ‘Wall Of Soundz’. It was Brian’s second collaboration with then-fiancee Delta Goodrem (the first being the #1 hit ‘Almost Here’ released in 2005). The song is about a dysfunctional and destructive relationship, which ironically mirrors Delta’s actual relationship with Brian, which ended badly. The music video was inspired by the film ‘Mr & Mrs. Smith’, and features Brian and Delta having a romantic dinner which devolves into an argument and a fight as the two destroy each other’s property. The single was a major flop, missing the top 40. MY THOUGHTS: I actually bumped this up on my list during the submission process, it’s a great song and Delta being prominently featured makes it worlds more appropriate to appear than ‘Just Say So’ was. I’m bitter as all hell that the video is geo-blocked and there’s no third-party upload available, the video is hilarious and Delta’s resting bitch-face as she drops Brian’s watch in a blender is amazing. You make me light up the room like I've just been found"RELEASED: October 15th, 2013 After a long stretch focusing on the Francophone market and some cover albums, 2013 saw Australian singer-songwriter Tina Arena release ‘Reset All’, her first album of original material in twelve years. ‘You Set Fire To My Life’ was the lead single from that album, and her first top 40 appearance on the single chart since 2004’s ‘Italian Love Song’ (a single from a greatest hits collection). While the album was successful, the single was not; despite Tina appearing as a contestant on Dancing With The Stars Australia at the time the single and album were released. MY THOUGHTS: Lol first hip hop bias and now ageism. #That’sPulseForYa Jokes aside though, for me Tina’s had better, and her most iconic work was released in the 90’s anyway. The song is decent though, which helped it make the top half of my list.
