It's been so long I no longer remember what my top 10 was or how much of it I've already lost. But Luke Kennedy deserved better! *pouts* Isaiah...hmm. On relisten I realize that I him that based on the song (which is very strong IMO), but I'm not sure Isaiah himself is all that special.

Ricki-Lee and Sami Jade both do nothing for me at all. Jessica Mauboy is a bit better, but even then I barely remember her music.

It kinda sucks to see Gold out so early, Guy Sebastian is a great singer imo

Practically a month later again, and HUZZAH an update! I've decided I'm gonna do two lots of 15 before the top 10, and I've got the next 15 ready to go. Once again a couple of honourable mentions to get the ball rolling, then it's reveal time~

RELEASED: April 29th, 2011

'We Run The Night' was the debut single by Havana Brown, who had previously been known as a DJ with her 'Crave' mixed compilation series. The song was produced by More Mega (a duo composed of Australian singer-songwriter Cassie David and American producer Snob Scrilla) before it was later remixed by RedOne for its international release. While the single was a huge success for Havana, the follow-up single 'Get It' was a failure and was not included on her EP 'When The Lights Go Out'.

MY THOUGHTS: I have always preferred the original version of 'We Run The Night' over the RedOne remix - I don't like what the remix did to the song's structure, and of course the inclusion of Pitbull irks me. I would have included this song in the main list since it was not a major US hit, but Havana had other singles for me to choose from, and this song's performance in other rankdowns it's appeared in has been lacklustre as well.

RELEASED: January 9th, 2015

'Elastic Heart' was first recorded for the soundtrack to 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire'. That version credited Diplo (who co-produced the song with Greg Kurstin) and The Weeknd; but Sia later re-recorded the song as a solo piece, which was included on her sixth album '1000 Forms Of Fear' and later released as the second single. The music video was stirred up controversy for featuring the adult male Shia LeBeouf in a cage with under-aged female dancer Maddie Ziegler (a regular collaborator) in skin-coloured clothing.

MY THOUGHTS: This was an obvious one to cut (along with Chandelier and Cheap Thrills) due to how big they were in the States; but with a larger number of honourable mentions to fill I decided to include it here. I think I would've tried to bury it on my list with the amount of non-crossover material there is, and the big international hits would freeze out all the lesser-known stuff.

Australian dance artist Zoe Badwi enjoyed success on the local club charts prior to her mainstream breakout; penned by singer-songwriter Amy Pearson (another local artist with a short chart life), Zoe’s song ‘Freefallin’ was her first ARIA top 10 hit (and her second #1 club hit). Unfortunately for Zoe, the song marked her with one-hit wonder status, as further singles from her self-titled debut album failed to chart and the album also performed poorly. Zoe has continued to release music, but even her time on the club charts has passed.

MY THOUGHTS: I didn’t immediately take notice of this song when it was out; I think I heard it on the radio so I was somewhat familiar with it, but I didn’t follow up on what it was called or who sang it. I also had some interest in the song’s writer Amy Pearson, so when I found out she’d written ‘Freefallin’ that may have been what prompted me to get more into this song. There are other singles from Zoe’s album that I prefer, and it sucks a little that none of them ever did anything. Also; here’s a random fact I discovered while prepping this write-up: Zoe’s cousin is none other than Jade Thirlwall from Little Mix.

‘Soldier’ was Samantha Jade’s third single following her X Factor win, and her first not to be featured on an album following her career breakout. Again written and produced by DNA Songs, it became Samantha’s third top 20 hit and it was eventually certified gold. The song was originally intended for her second album, which was due to be released in 2014; but the album was scrapped when Samantha’s mother was diagnosed with cancer and Samantha put her career on hold to care for her mother. Following her mother’s passing Samantha started from scratch on a new album, the result of which was her 2015 release ‘Nine’.

MY THOUGHTS: This song deserved to be f**king huge tbh, it is an epic pop gem and remains the best thing Sammi’s ever done. And ya’ll… I can’t with ya’ll putting this out so low. I do wish it got a better video though, but that comes down to the Aussie labels not knowing what a budget is (then again making money on local acts must be like milking blood from stones so uhh…)

COMING UP AT #38: Nobody ranked this in their top 20 or their bottom 10, so its placement here is pretty middle-of-the-road with no major love or strong hate. This only spent one list outside the top half.

In retrospect I'm not sure why I ranked it quite that low, but I recall not being at all impressed with Samantha. The song overall was paint-by-numbers and the production in the chorus seemed kind of stilted. I felt that thi song could not make up its mind whether it wanted to be a 2011 EDM track or 2004 r&b power ballad, and so it fell short of being either. Even if I were to redo my ranks now she probably wouldn't rise more than 10 spots for me.

RELEASED: November 1st, 2013

‘Borrow My Heart’ is the debut single by Taylor Henderson, 5th season X Factor runner-up. He was a highly popular contestant during the show, only beaten in popularity by season winner Dami Im. ‘Borrow My Heart’ would have been released as Taylor’s winner’s single had he been crowned instead of Dami, and while she pulled off the impressive feat of debuting at #1 with less than half of the tracking week to go, Taylor’s song was released anyway the following Friday. With a full week of sales behind him, Taylor was able to replace Dami atop the chart.

MY THOUGHTS: I wasn’t immediately into this song, I knew Taylor was popular but that was about it. I do remember being kind of annoyed at how quickly Sony pushed his song out there though; I didn’t like the thought that Sony could potentially screw over the winner of X Factor by releasing the runner-up’s single so hastily. I mean, we were already on the cycle where the new tracking week starts before the charts are even released, so ‘Borrow My Heart’ was released before Dami had even charted and I thought it would look really bad if Dami missed the #1 debut, then got blocked off by Taylor in her second week. So I’m glad that didn’t happen.

‘What You’ve Done To Me’ is the long-time-coming career launching point for Samantha Jade. She had previously been signed to Jive Records in the US, and was working on her debut pop album with massive-name producers (such as Max Martin and Timbaland) but the project stalled out and the album never materialised - then Samantha was dropped. Years later, she tried out for The X Factor as a last resort before quitting music altogether, and she eventually emerged victorious. ‘What You’ve Done To Me’ was released as her winner’s single, making it to #1 with two-and-a-bit days’ worth of sales (a feat repeated next season by Dami Im). Incidentally, Australian media ignored her prior career when naming this song her debut single.

MY THOUGHTS: Years before she did X Factor I’d wanted Sammi to become a thing. I loved her song ‘Secret’, and the remix that leaked of her unreleased single ‘Eyes On Me’. I didn’t even know she was on the show until I randomly caught an ad for it toward the end, so I was rooting for her in the final and I loved that she won. This is a great song and I’m happy that it finally validated Sammi’s career. After it almost won one of Au$tin’s rankdowns I was hoping it would do a lot better here but I don’t know if this rankdown had any participants in common with that one so… #RIP

COMING UP AT #36: This song finished lower than I would have expected; it's one of the songs that received international recognition. Out of six top half rankings, two of them are top 20's and one is a low top 10. Meanwhile it also has a low bottom 10 ranking. This song had to fight for its top half placement.

Jonas Blue is a producer from the UK, but featured vocalist William Singe is local; he got his start on The X Factor as well, as part of boy band The Collective (a group put together on the show, in similar fashion to Fifth Harmony, Little Mix and One Direction from other international versions of the show). That band parted ways after William left the group to go solo. This song is his commercial breakout, finding major success in Australia and across Europe - but failing in the US, narrowly missing the Hot 100.

MY THOUGHTS: For me this song is just okay… but I swear that chorus reminds me of ‘Hey Mamma’ by the Sunstroke Project, almost to the point I could swear the Moldovan Eurovision song was sampled/interpolated into the chorus of this - only the two songs don’t have any writers in common. Anyway, since this is a song which had some degree of US exposure I thought it might have fared a little better than this but then again I wasn’t helping it lol rip.

COMING UP AT #35: Another song from an artist with multiple entries. The majority of people ranked this in their top half, but it only got one top 20, while it also got two bottom 20 rankings. This spent the entire game in the top half, and was another song to begin right up toward the top.

RELEASED: March 10th, 2011

‘What Happened To Us?’ was the third single from Jessica Mauboy’s sophomore album ‘Get ‘Em Girls’, and the third consecutive single to feature a male guest artist. It was also the second single of the era to miss the top 10. This song featured British singer Jay Sean, who also co-wrote the song. A different version featuring Stan Walker in place of Jay Sean was also later released after the single had completed its run. It was the final release from the original version of the album, and was followed up with ‘Inescapable’ and the expanded deluxe re-release of ‘Get ‘Em Girls’.

MY THOUGHTS: I liked this single a lot more than the previous two, and it deserved to do better on the charts, even though I don’t like Jay Sean that much (and by this point he’d had three top 20 AUS hits, so he was pretty popular here at the time). If it underperformed on the charts despite everything it had going for it, I guess I can also understand why it underperformed here. Meh; not here for the snub though.

COMING UP AT #34: An artist with multiple songs in the rankdown is about to lose their last song, and the sting will be real. This song ended up with a high standard deviation (although not in the top 5); this is because while only half of players put this in their top half, when they did they put it in their top 25. Three top 20's disappear, two of which are top 10's - the highest of which is even a top 5. A bottom 5 ranking aided in dragging it down however, and it had to fight its way back into the top half with its low rankings all bunched together in the middle of the submission process.

RELEASED: November 4th, 2016

‘Hurt Anymore’ is a single by X Factor winners Samantha Jade and Cyrus Villanueva. It was expected to be the lead single from a future album from Samantha, but the single failed to launch despite multiple performances, and no parent album from either artist has since been announced (As of 2018 Samantha DOES have another album in the pipeline, but it’s a disco covers album). This is Samantha’s last song to exit this rankdown, and Cyrus’s first.

MY THOUGHTS: This song should’ve been a big smash and a return to the top of the charts for Sammi. It does remind me of ‘Love Me Like You Do’ by Ellie Goulding, and that song was a hit so this should’ve at least done better than barely scraping the top 50. I hate the video though, it’s so cheap and the effects look tacky. Sammi had one good look when she’s topless in the water, and that setup was wasted with the way it was utilised. I also hate that with as many chances as she had, Sammi couldn’t get even one song into the top 20. Although this did get its bad ranking earlier, so thanks to the later submitters for bringing it back up to where it finished at.

COMING UP AT #33: This actually did pretty well, considering what it is. Nobody put it in their bottom 20, and out of the 6 top half rankings two are top 20's (one of which is a top 10). It took until the second half of the game for this to make the top half, and it was nearly top 30 until the last ranking brought it to its final resting place.

RELEASED: August 28th, 2013

‘Shame’ is a singly by country singer Keith Urban, released exclusively in Australia and New Zealand as the second single from his 8th studio album ‘Fuse’. The song was co-written and co-produced with pop producers Stargate and Benny Blanco. It was the second consecutive single from ‘Fuse’ to chart in Australia, and was also the last; it out-peaked ‘Little Bit Of Everything’ with both songs reaching the top 40 (which Keith would not reach again until ‘The Fighter’ four years later).

MY THOUGHTS: I can definitely hear the pop influences in the production on this, but to me it still sounds more country than ‘The Fighter’. When I saw this was not released in the US I thought it would be a good track to highlight for the game even though the song was not a commercial hit. I do like the song though, it only ended up where it did on my list because of the abundance of pop material I have a stronger attachment to.

COMING UP AT #32: Another song which ended up with a huge standard deviation (bigger than Sammi/Cyrus but still not in the top 5). Four out of this song's five top half rankings are top 15 rankings, and it even features multiple top 5 rankings. Someone also gets a perfect ranking. This started right up there, was damn near flushed out to the other end, then fought like hell to get back to where it ended up.

Reigan Derry has had a lot of tough breaks trying to make it in the music business, including attempts on both Australian Idol and The X Factor, and a brief stint in girl group Scarlett Belle sandwiched in between. ‘All Of The Pieces’ was the lead single from her debut solo EP of the same name, and the only original song on said EP. The song was not successful on the charts, and when her later single ‘Feels Like Heaven’ also performed poorly it is presumed she got dropped from Sony.

MY THOUGHTS: I bumped this up a fair amount on my list during the second half of the submission period when it started recovering and looked like it could have ended up in a decent position. I do wish it could’ve landed higher ‘cause it is a nice pop song and it’s a shame it didn’t do much here or on the charts.

COMING UP AT #31: This game featured 10 unique #1's. DistrictTwelve has already lost his, with the elimination of Iggy Azalea, and we are about to lose the second #1 of the game. This one hurts in particular because, not only did this song deserve better, but every other #1 in the game made it into the top 20 (#CasualSpoilers). Aside from the aforementioned #1, this song received one more top 20 ranking, but it was damned by minor distaste; the low-end rankings for this are still only down in the lower 50's. This looked like it would finish at least top 20, until the last few rankings dragged it down.

After revitalising her second album ‘Get ‘Em Girls’ with a deluxe re-release and the major hit ‘Inescapable’, the follow-up release and 5th single of the era was the Stan Walker-assisted pop track ‘Galaxy’. It marked the fourth collab single out of five from the era, and also the third to miss the top 10. Among the song’s credits are Richard Vission as a producer and Ferras Alqaisi as a co-writer (Ferras is also a co-writer of another song coming up in this list). The Stan Walker version of ‘What Happened To Us’ was released on the digital EP release of this single.

MY THOUGHTS: I’m really not a fan of Stan Walker, but I quite like this song and I was hoping it would do better than this (but then again there’s also ‘This Ain’t Love’). It’s the second half of the submissions period where it started to get tanked. I’m not sure why it wasn’t a bigger chart hit coming off the back of ‘Inescapable’, especially since Stan Walker’s Australian Idol win was still relatively fresh and Jess has always been somewhat popular. I like the video for this; and annoyingly it’s another one that’s geo-restricted.

RELEASED: July 9th, 2010

‘Plans’ was the third single from Birds Of Tokyo’s self-titled third album, and their breakout hit. It is their first song to chart in the top 50 on the ARIA chart, and despite missing the top 10 it was nominated for Single Of The Year at the 2010 ARIA Awards, where they performed the song live, and the song also reached #4 on Triple J’s Hottest 100 countdown. Only one other single from the album charted, but they would later hit even bigger with later single ‘Lanterns’.

MY THOUGHTS: This is a song I think I heard in an ad campaign once; otherwise it was a song I’d heard about before I heard the song itself. I do like it though, despite not listening to it a whole lot; and I like seeing a non-pop act doing well in this game (and ‘Lanterns’ is still to come, so these guys have done well to get both songs in the top 30).

Opinion on this one was split; almost all of its top half rankings were top 20's, including a top 5 (the outlier still being a #21) while most of its low-end rankings were in the 50's, with a bottom 20 thrown in for good measure. It took until the last couple of rankings for this to find its footing in the top 30.

‘Stone’ was the debut single from X Factor winner Cyrus Villanueva (operating under just his first name, post-show). The song’s charting made it the seventh consecutive top 10 winner’s single, and fifth consecutive top 5. Just like previous winners, his debut album featured studio versions of his X Factor performances, making ‘Stone’ the only original track on the album and the only single. While the album went top 10, future singles have been far less successful and a follow-up album featuring original material has not been announced.

MY THOUGHTS: I don’t really know this song that well, and I have no real interest in Cyrus as an artist either (I like ‘Hurt Anymore’ just fine, but that’s because of Samantha Jade). I guess I don’t have any real issues with Cyrus landing here, he’s not for me but clearly he was alright to you guys.

Dami Im was a dark horse contender to win the fifth season of The X Factor, which she did in a huge victory - nearly double the amount of votes as runner-up Taylor Henderson. ‘Alive’ was released as her debut winner’s single following the show, pulling off a #1 debut in a very small sales window. Hers was the third winner’s single to top the chart, The song also found success in South Korea, Dami’s birth country.

MY THOUGHTS: I didn’t really come around to Dami until ‘Sound Of Silence’ and Eurovision, and even then I wouldn’t call myself a big fan. This song is okay, but not one I’ve had much interest in even after Dami grew on me. I don’t think this is a bad position for her first song to show up here.

COMING UP AT #27: Out of seven top half rankings, four of them were top 20's but none of them were top 10's. Someone also stuck this in their bottom 10. At the halfway point this was looking at a top 10 finish but then the latter half of submissions pushed it back down again.

After mild successes with Bebe Rexha and Dua Lipa, producer Martin Garrix next tapped Troye Sivan to collaborate with; Troye had previous success in Australia with all of the singles from ‘Blue Neighbourhood’ hitting the top 40, and in the US his single ‘Youth’ reached the upper quarter of the Hot 100. But when the single was released, it was a failure to launch stateside; not reaching the success of its predecessors. In Australia however, it became Troye’s fifth top 40 hit with his third Platinum certification.

MY THOUGHTS: I had higher hopes for this song when it was released, and I’m sad it wasn’t bigger. That said, it’s probably my least favourite Troye single although I don’t think there’s yet been a single of his that I’ve disliked. I think this did pretty well for a song without any top 10 rankings, since most people ranked it in their top half.

COMING UP AT #26: Another consecutive song where an artist with multiple entries loses their first song. Seven top half rankings are featured here, and two of them are top 20's; but neither of them are top 10's. It also has a bottom 10 ranking. This song made the top 5 early on, but was quickly pushed out until it ended up here, the first blood for this particular artist.

RELEASED: April 13th, 2012

‘Sitting On Top Of The World’ was the lead single from Delta Goodrem’s fourth studio album ‘Child Of The Universe’. The album was stuck for a long time in development hell until the single was finally announced, timed to coincide with the debut season of The Voice, of which Delta has been the longest-running judge (with the upcoming 7th season being her sixth year). There was controversy regarding this song due to similarities between it and ‘Rebellion (Lies)’ by Arcade Fire.

MY THOUGHTS: This is my least favourite of the three ‘Child Of The Universe’ singles, but it’s still not a bad song. Delta’s done well to last this long without losing a song, and for me this is the right one to be leaving first. Here’s another one with a geo-blocked music video, this irks me.
