Here we are guys; top 10. The final stretch! We’re gonna kick things off with the next two honourable mentions before we delve right into the main reveals. It was a song that Sarah had written at 16 while ‘going through a tough time’, and the song was fully produced and recorded for the grand final of the debut season of The Voice, where each of the four grand finalists got the chance to present an original song. While Sarah placed 4th out of the four contestants, her original song was the best-performing track out of everyone that wasn’t season winner Karise Eden; following Karise’s win, the entire top 5 of the ARIA chart was made up of The Voice tracks; four of these were Karise’s, while sandwiched in between them was ‘Beautiful’. The song was certified Gold after just one week of sales, and to date is Sarah’s highest chart position. MY THOUGHTS: I prefer her single ‘No Shame’, which is why I put that song on the list over this one. But also, I think the lyrics are kind of trite, basic clichés that fall apart when you really take note of them. Plus it’s literally only half a song - the thing needs a second verse! Criticisms aside, I do actually like the song. I don’t think it would have performed any better than ‘No Shame’ did though. RELEASED: June 10th, 2016 ‘In My Blood’ is the first single released for The Veronicas’ upcoming fourth studio album. It was written and produced with the same people behind the twins’ previous single ‘You Ruin Me’, and it was their third career #1. Two further singles (‘On Your Side’ and ‘The Only High’) have since been released from the album, but as of 2018 no album has been announced. Things have been complicated for two major reasons; the twins’ mother took ill in late 2017, and also Jess and Lisa had a falling out over the passing of marriage equality in Australia, with Jess’ girlfriend Ruby Rose insinuating that in private Lisa was not nearly as supportive of same-sex couples (particularly in regard to her own sister) as she was in public. MY THOUGHTS: I like this song a lot, it’s one I probably should have included on the main list (either this or ‘On Your Side’). I’m certainly happy it made it to #1, I thought streaming would hold it back (I can’t remember what else was out at the time, but there was one of those streaming monsters active at the time, and I thought that would destroy The Veronicas’ sales advantage). I have no idea what the state of their career is in now since they fell out, but I hope they are working things out. PARTICIPANTSAz PaynterBenoBilly@antigonerising DistrictTwelvePollenJuan CarlosWho The Hell Is Leo?✔Normiwillapted33THE PEANUT GALLERY@walker9 @jamesflame Mylo13 💜COMING UP AT #10: 6 people ranked this in their top half; three of these are top 10’s, including a #1. Down the other end is a top 20 which will forever be held over that person’s head. This song spent the first few lists in the top 5 before getting unceremoniously dumped out of the top 10, then someone really tried it by kicking it out of the top 20, but the last two lists gave it just what it needed to claw its way back into the top 10.

The top 10 finish he was denied in Wintertime Madness. "What if I dive off the edge of my life and there's nothing beneath? What if I live like there's nothing to lose just to die on my knees? At least I’ll know, I walked the dark, I took the scars, I risked it all And learned to love the fall"RELEASED: June 18th, 2010 ‘Love The Fall’ was a single by Michael Paynter, released as the title track from an EP and intended to be included on his debut album ‘This Welcome Diversion’. The song features The Veronicas providing backing vocals; Michael became good friends with the duo after meeting them at the 2008 ARIA Awards. It is Michael’s sole hit in Australia, reaching the top 10 on the local airplay chart and top 20 on the ARIA singles chart. This is Michael’s third single intended for his unreleased album (following commercial failures ‘Closer’ and ‘A Victim Song’), which was eventually scrapped when Michael parted ways with Sony. The song was finally included on Michael’s independently-released album ‘Weary Stars’ in 2014. MY THOUGHTS: My one chance to include my fave in this theme of rankdowns (well… the one more likely to actually go somewhere) and I was determined to see it finish in the top 10. The things I had to do to achieve it though, damn… #LookWhatYouMadeMeDo I love this song, it’s one of my favourite Michael Paynter songs. The Veronicas complement him well on the track, and the instrumental section with the strings is just epic. I don’t know how anyone could dislike this song *pointed glare at the low rankers*. Also, you need to check out this live acoustic performance where Michael effortlessly outsings your fave pop girls (except Kelly Clarkson of course, but he could go toe-to-toe with her surely). The other two put it in their bottom 20, and one of these is a bottom 10. This started low, then as the good rankings continued to come in its position improved with each list until its final stop.

"There's a hole in the middle of my heart again Can we start again, can we start again? There's a hole in the middle and it never mends It never mends, can we start again?"RELEASED: March 10th, 2015 ‘Start Again’ is a single by Conrad Sewell, released as the second single from Conrad’s debut EP ‘All I Know’. The song was very nearly given over to Kylie Minogue, but Conrad decided against this as ‘it didn’t sound like a Kylie song’. Reportedly, Conrad recorded the song in a single take. After featuring in promotional spots for Australian TV soap ‘Home & Away’ the song became a #1 hit, easily surpassing the performance of previous release ‘Hold Me Up’. The song’s success is what helped spur ‘Firestone’ to its eventual top 10 peak, despite ‘Firestone’ being released months prior to ‘Start Again’. MY THOUGHTS: I was interested in Conrad for a hot minute after ‘Hold Me Up’ was given a push to radio in the US, and because I enjoyed his sister Grace’s version of ‘You Don’t Own Me’ but I never liked ‘Firestone’ so I just wasn’t invested in this song at all. Good for Conrad making the top 10 with this though. There are no bottom 20 rankings either, so the two bottom half rankings are actually high for that region. It spent the entire second half of the submission process in the top 10.

"I love you always, forever Near and far, closer together Everywhere I will be with you Every sin, I will do for you"RELEASED: June 3rd, 2016 ‘I Love You Always Forever’ is a cover of the Donna Lewis song released by Betty Who initially as a standalone single, but later included on her sophomore album ‘The Valley’. It is her first single to find commercial success; reaching the top 10 in Australia and the top 40 in New Zealand. In the US it is her third #1 hit on the Dance Club Songs chart. Betty Who has currently been relegated to one-hit-wonder status since she has yet to follow up on this song’s commercial success in Australia. MY THOUGHTS: I’ve never liked this song, I think Donna Lewis has a really thin, weak singing voice. Betty sounds better on the song, but she didn’t make me like it. I don’t mind this being top 10 though, here’s a lesser-known artist resonating with (what little of) the Pulse crowd (is playing this game) enough to make the top 10. I just wish Michael had been received more like this was. This song features both a top 5 ranking and a bottom 5 ranking. Like Betty Who, this song spent the entire second half of submissions in the top 10 as the good rankings poured in.

"It comes and goes in waves It always does, it always does We watch as our young hearts fade Into the flood, into the flood"RELEASED: September 30th, 2016 ‘Waves’ is the debut single by Dean Lewis, released as the lead single from his debut EP ‘Same Kind Of Different’. While the song was released in 2016, it didn’t begin to gain traction until 2017. The song’s chart life was long enough to make the upper half of the ARIA year-end chart for 2017. While the song has not been given a push internationally, the song has been featured in multiple US TV shows like ‘Riverdale’, ‘Suits’ and ‘Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments’. MY THOUGHTS: Here’s another song that does absolutely nothing for me, Dean singing in his natural ocker Aussie accent puts me right off. This song has some US exposure through TV placements so I guess it has more visibility than Betty Who did, and for similar reasons to Betty I can’t begrudge Dean for making the top 10. The song just isn’t for me. Seven people ranked this song in their top half. The reason for the high SD? Five people ranked this in their top 3 (including a #1) while two people ranked it in their bottom 20. This spent all but two lists in the top 10, and which each list it climbed a little bit higher until the last list caused it to backtrack.

I think You Ruin Me or Battle Scars will win. One down. Sorry James. "These battle scars, don’t look like they’re fading Don’t look like they’re ever going away They ain't never gonna change"RELEASED: August 10th, 2012 ‘Battle Scars’ is a song by Guy Sebastian featuring American rapper Lupe Fiasco, released as the third single from Guy’s seventh album ‘Armageddon’. Lupe Fiasco later added the song to his fourth album in countries outside of Australia. The song is Guy’s sixth chart-topper in Australia, and Lupe’s first. It is also Guy’s biggest hit in Australia, with a 9x Platinum certification (over 630,000 copies sold). When released in the US, it made the lower half of the Hot 100 and was certified Platinum. It is Guy’s only entry on the main Billboard chart. ‘Battle Scars’ has the fourth largest standard deviation of the game. MY THOUGHTS: This song’s not bad I guess, but I’ve never really paid much attention to it since I’m not much into Guy’s music. ‘Battle Scars’ made a lot of sense to include however, and I knew it was going to be popular based on the reception it got during the song reveals. I’m not personally disappointed to see it miss the top 5, but I can certainly see how it would be seen as disappointing (I’m sorry James!) But then I also see Delta and The Veronicas in the top 5 (yes!) and Peking Duk/AlunaGeorge in there as well (unexpected but very much welcomed). "I had a one-way ticket to a place where all the demons go Where the wind don't change And nothing in the ground can ever grow No hope, just lies And you're taught to cry in your pillow But I survived"RELEASED: September 25th, 2015 ‘Alive’ is the lead single from Sia’s seventh studio album ‘This Is Acting’. The project consisted of songs Sia had written for other artists that had been rejected; ‘Alive’ in particular was co-written with Adele and was intended for inclusion on ‘25’, but at the last minute the song was cut. Adele allowed Sia to keep the song for herself, as well as ‘Bird Set Free’ which was also written for Adele’s record. ‘Alive’ reached the top 10 in Australia, and also found success across Europe and in Japan. It was not a major success in the US however, underperforming compared to ‘Chandelier’ and ‘Elastic Heart’. MY THOUGHTS: I like ‘Alive’ quite a lot actually, and I wish it had been a much bigger hit than it was (or, at least in the US, a hit at all lol). When it came to choosing Sia material for this list though, I wanted to put forward songs that weren’t big US hits, which meant stuff from before she blew up as an artist and non-US singles. I’m not sure how this song would have performed if it had been on the main list. RELEASED: February 28th, 2014 ‘Geronimo’ is the first single from indie pop band Sheppard’s debut album ‘Bombs Away’. The song was a massive success in Australia, with an exceptionally long chart run. The song has been certified 6x Platinum, and was the most successful single by an Australian artist in 2014. It later crossed over to the US, where it found varying degrees of success across multiple radio formats, and came close to breaking the top half of the Hot 100. MY THOUGHTS: Here’s yet another song that I could have swapped into the main list; I think the reason I didn’t is because of familiarity bias - because this is a song that got considerable attention in the US I thought it would overshadow a lot of the content that is exclusive to Australia. I think this would’ve ended up somewhere in the middle of the pack on my list; I like it, but it’s not one of my favourite things ever. PARTICIPANTSAz PaynterBenoBilly@antigonerising DistrictTwelvePollenJuan CarlosWho The Hell Is Leo?✔Normiwillapted33THE PEANUT GALLERY@walker9 @jamesflame Mylo13 💜COMING UP AT #5: We have officially found the lowest standard deviation of the game. How did this song achieve this? Well, it is one of only two songs to feature nothing but top half rankings. The lowest ranking this song got was #34, while its highest was #6. This song spent almost the entire game in the top 10, always skirting around the top 5 (and at one point was even top 3).

"Honey, we don't need no fake magic, I ain't being funny You can't buy this with paper or plastic Honey, money only buys you fake magic, I ain't no phoney I'll take you far away with no tricks"RELEASED: June 2nd, 2017 ‘Fake Magic’ is a single by Australian EDM duo Peking Duk, featuring English duo AlunaGeorge. While the song did not achieve a high peak in Australia its longer chart life helped it reach Platinum certification. This song is especially notable in this game for its low standard deviation; it has the lowest SD by far, being the only song with an SD under 10. MY THOUGHTS: I’m generally not a fan of Aluna Francis’ voice, on all the AlunaGeorge songs I’ve heard - but I like her vocals here and this is a good song. What I find amazing is how this song made the top half of everyone’s list (only two songs managed this feat that I’m aware of). I love seeing this in the top 5 though, because it’s something completely unexpected - and to have the lowest SD by a wide margin! "What if I lose my self control What if I choose to let it go I want to let you and me collide Baby these wings were made These wings were made to fly"RELEASED: July 24th, 2015 ‘Wings’ is the 9th career #1 single for Delta Goodrem, released as the lead single to her fifth studio album ‘Wings Of The Wild’. The song was inspired heavily by the sounds popular in the UK at the time, with Delta listening to artists such as Calvin Harris & Haim, Ella Henderson and London Grammar to overcome a bout of creative block. With the song reaching #1, Delta is currently in third place for the most chart-toppers among female artists in ARIA chart history behind Kylie Minogue (10 #1’s) and Madonna (11 #1’s). MY THOUGHTS: I was so disappointed to see this get flushed out early in the 2015 non-US hits rankdown so it made me really happy how well it managed to do here - a performance more deserving for this fantastic pop song. I particularly like how it was always in contention to win the game, that made me happy to see, and while I wish it could’ve finished in the top 3 (top 2 even) I’m glad it stayed in the top 5 the entire time. The spread of ranks is wider here, which is why it’s got a bigger SD than ‘Fake Magic’. The top 3 each has a #1 ranking on it, so needless to say someone’s about to lose their top song. For me this is the most aggravating reveal of the game; not only did this spent the entirety of the game in the top 3 it spent most of that time as the actual #1. I’m lowkey pissed it ended up here.

I think You Ruin Me or Battle Scars will win.Throw this months old rankdown away. "You play me like a symphony Play me till your fingers bleed I'm your greatest masterpiece You ruin me"RELEASED: September 19th, 2014 ‘You Ruin Me’ is the lead single from The Veronicas’ self-titled third album, and their first single under Sony Music Australia. The duo had longstanding issues with their previous record label, who withheld their album ‘Life On Mars’ until the girls had enough and sought legal action to break their contract. ‘You Ruin Me’ was seen as a risk, because for the first time the girls were releasing a ballad as their lead single instead of an uptempo song (like ‘4Ever’, ‘Hook Me Up’ and ‘Lolita’ before this). The song became their second ARIA chart-topper. ‘You Ruin Me’ features the fifth lowest standard deviation in the game. MY THOUGHTS: I’m actually gutted this got usurped from winning. As you can see from the song’s progression below it spent six lists at #1 and never left the top 3. While I’m thankful to James and Cynthia for helping get Michael into the top 10 you guys suck for kicking this out of top spot lmao. willapted33 #1 Who The Hell Is Leo?✔ #3 ( P-P-P-P-PERFECT RANKING!) RELEASED: July 24th, 2015 ‘’Fire And The Flood’ is a single by singer-songwriter Vance Joy, released as the first single from a deluxe re-issue of his debut album ‘Dream Your Life Away’. It was the fifth single from the album overall, and the second top 10 hit from the album. The song found major success locally, selling 4x Platinum and reaching the top half of the 2015 ARIA Year-End Chart. The song also found considerable success at alternative and Hot AC radio formats in the US. MY THOUGHTS: Here’s another one that could’ve been on the list, but this time it’s personal bias the kept it off. I like ‘Riptide’, which was left off due to familiarity bias, but otherwise I’m not overly invested in Vance Joy (he’s not my thing, sorry). I’m not sure he would’ve performed that well had he been on the main list. Both songs have six top 10 rankings and each of them has five top 5 rankings. Both songs also have one bottom half ranking. One of these songs has a bottom 10 ranking. One of these songs did nothing but climb with every successive ranking that came in. The other spent a moment at #1 before getting kicked back out of top spot. Did the consistent climber make it to #1? Or did the song that already reached the summit fight its way back to retake the spot?

Forever judging you for murking basically my entire top 8 before the top 10 reveal just to boost Michael Paynter smh For the record you're not the one that made me do it. "These presents don't really come for free Your paychecks don't mean that much to me Just take my hand and hold me tight You'll never buy my love"RELEASED: February 19th, 2016 ‘This Girl’ is a remix by French DJ Kungs of the original 2009 single by Australian funk trio Cookin’ On 3 Burners, which featured vocals by Australian singer Kylie Auldist. The remixed single was released as the lead track from Kungs’ debut album ‘Layers’. The single found widespread success throughout Europe and in the US it was a moderately successful hit. "When you say it like that oh-oh, oh-oh Got me falling right back oh-oh, oh-oh (hmm) When you say it like that oh-oh, oh-oh Let me f**k you right back oh-oh, oh-oh (hmm)"RELEASED: April 22nd, 2016 ‘Say It’ is a single by Australian producer Flume, featuring Swedish pop singer-songwriter Tove Lo on vocals. The song was released as the third single from Flume’s sophomore album ‘Skin’. The collaboration came about when Flume heard ‘Habits (Stay High)’ playing in a bar in Los Angeles, then he got in touch with her the next day to work together on a song. ‘Say It’ was the result of their efforts, taking two days to write. The song was a big hit in Australia, with limited success across Europe and in the US. MY THOUGHTS: In hindsight I f**ked up putting this and Kungs on the list. I thought, because they weren’t huge US hits they’d be fine, but I underestimated how popular they’d be and I thought familiarity bias would have been reigned in since they weren’t big US smashes. At least of the two, the song with an Australian lead artist won (and of the two it’s the song I actually like), but I’m not a fan of Delta or The Veronicas (more deserving winners) losing out to songs where the foreigner was (IMO) the draw card - kind of misses the point of this being an Australian-focused game when the international acts take over at the end. Yay Harley! <3 Glad that he won this (despite "Say It" isn't one of my favourite songs from him), although I wouldn't have minded if The Veronicas or Delta Goodrem have won this either.

I'm disappointed with this final two, but was great to see and discover some new music.
Great job AZ!

Didn't mind whatever won from the top 2, I'll take Say It!
I love the visuals and work that was put into this rankdown, wish more people participated. Thank you for hosting.

Awesome top 2! <3 Both would've been in my top 3, so now I don't have to be sad that I didn't send in a list.
