Great rankdown Red! It inspires me to try something like this. For you rockists, mine would have less country and rap, but it would have more oldies.

LMAO at me being the furthest overall from the actual results of the rankdown... Throughout most of the reveal I was pretty happy with how my rank didn't seem to be too terribly off from the crowd I guess I was wrong!

"Beds Are Burning" - OMG WTF is this song! It was almost immediately a bottom-5 for me, just because of how weird it is. Seriously, the way the lead singer moves his mouth makes him look like some kind of muppet or something, and he sounds like an impressionist doing a purposely bad impression of somebody doing a bad impression. And then there's the dancing! Yikes! ...And then I realized that I was thoroughly entertained, and the song has a really cool vibe if you get past the lead singer... And then I ended up putting it in the top 10 Lol I hadn't paid much attention to this thread in general (in part because I didn't end up participating) but your reflection on 'Beds Are Burning' made me chuckle. :kii: I'll give you the weird vocals; Peter Garrett is singing in his natural Aussie accent, which already sounds unusual given the international singing accent is very much American-ized, but then his accent when he's singing seems exaggerated even. But to me it's so weird to think of this song as a big global hit because the lyrics and subject matter are so specifically tied to a particular time and place in Australian history/culture, to the point where you might think the song is exclusionary to anyone from outside of Australia who don't get the references and don't know the context and story behind the song. And yet on the Wikipedia pages I can see top 10/20 peaks all OVER the world lmao!

Congrats, Daryl...(finally) you have cleared out your bottom ten with this latest reveal. Also, explain. Most of the older songs here bored me on first listen tbh. It's the same reason why I put Righteous Brothers (iirc), Rush and Beatles in my bottom 10 - their songs all bored me. I don't dislike them, but I found at least 30 songs that were more enjoyable. The Rush song was particularly disappointing considering how much I liked "Headlong Flight" from the 2012 Active rankdown. I should've given them another chance, but they simply did not do much for me on my first listens. Also glad that Black Hole Sun won, thought In the End was an obvious winner, but both are great.

Yes, I saved my live reactions to this entire rankdown. For your entertainment here:
40. “Suzanne” (#34): Opening riff is identical to a Rise Against song. It’s a good song, but nothing more. The vocals are not the greatest, and the “now” part can be irritating.
39. “We Carry On” (#28): Not a huge Portishead fan, but this one was definitely unique, even though I knew a lot of people would dislike it. Don’t love it but it’s interesting enough, I like “The Rip” a lot more.
38. “Freak on a Leash” (#37): Can’t say I’ve ever been a Korn fan, but this is one of their better songs. The scatting bridge is enough for me to drop it to the bottom though. Not that it would have been much higher without it, but still
37. “We Major” (#25): The anti-rap bias from a certain demographic shows. I wouldn’t call it one of my favorite Kanye songs, but it’s in his upper half for sure.
36. “Black Mire” (#31): Black hearts… fuck ‘em. Didn’t think much of this when I first heard it in the tourney, but it’s a bit of a slow burner and I can see it growing on me if I listen to it more. Still too new for me to put it above songs I love more.
35. “Do the Evolution” (#18): Alright, I am not happy at all about this one. Definitely tanked by the Pop posters. Goddamn it! I can’t fathom it. Not one of my favorite Pearl Jam songs, but it’s still pretty good. One of their punkier tunes, and the lyrics about the downfall of man are greatly appreciated. As well as the video, one of the greatest in music history.
34. “Midnight in Montgomery” (#39): This is a country song.
33. “Kiss Them For Me” (#33): P-P-Perfect ranking time! Can’t say I ever liked this song, or this band, although I understand their role in musical history.
32. “Let Me Down Easy” (#32): P-P-Perfect ranking time x2! This had nothing to stand out.
31. “He Stopped Loving Her Today” (#35): This is a country song. The small minutia of emotion I felt in this made me kind enough to spare it from a crueler fate.
“Fancy” is the only song here which I can say I hate. It’s awful. Easily the worst of the country songs here, and it better go out soon.
30. “Fancy” (#40): This was gutter trash. No more words.
29. “Staring at the Sun” (#16): This is way too low. Not my favorite of theirs but still this deserved a lot better. Also a good song for eclipse watching.
28. “Promises” (#28): P-P-Perfect ranking x3! I like The Cranberries and I like this song, but this one didn’t do that much to make it special or justify its placement higher than where I put it.
27. “Ran” (#36): The vocals grate on me for this one. “Seasons” is fine and all, but I cannot stand his voice on this one.
26. “Exit Music” (#3): Yeah, I know exactly who to point the fingers too. You goddamn motherfuckers. This is what happens when we give those people an equal share of the vote in this rankdown. We should have calculated it so their vote counts 1/4th or something.
25. “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin” (#38): This is not good. It borders on terrible sometimes. I will not spare the oldies just because they’re cult classics. I have no attachment to crap like this.
24. “The Trees” (#21): The Spirit of Radio would have been in my Top 10. I don’t like this one nearly as much.
23. “Oblivion” (#10): Middle fingers to you sons of bitches. I’ll just keep on throwing middle fingers in the air. Pussies can’t handle a little sludge metal. Grow a pair and appreciate this music which is adored by both critics and fans. Jesus F. Christ.
22. “Rock Bottom” (#17): Would have preferred to see this do better, but I’m not going to be crying about it. One of Em’s best for sure.
21. “Heaven and Hell” (#13): Yeah guys this is no good
What song(s) in the top 20 is/are a surprise to you? Siberia, Hallelujah, Forgot About Dre
What song(s) disappointed you by not making the top 20? Exit Music, Oblivion, Heaven and Hell
What do you think the top 5 will be now? Black Hole Sun, In the End, All Apologies, The Man Who Sold the World and Cherub Rock
Any bets on which songs will miss the top 10? Better be While My Guitar Gently Weeps. It’s my lowest left. I Heard It Through the Grapevine can also leave.
20. “Bug Eyes” (#2): Feel my wrath - feel my fucking wrath. Yet for what it’s worth, it was the pop posters who boosted this the most. 4D Chess indeed, Red. Gotta say I’m extremely disappointed - I thought this had a dark horse shot at the top 10 given some people who surprisingly said they loved it. The ones who ranked it in the bottom 10 - you broke my heart. You broke my fucking heart. Especially since you are the ones who like alternative rock. You broke my heart.
19. “Hallelujah” (#29): A decent Paramore song, which is decent as all decent gets, but being decent only gets you in this range on the rankdown.
18. “Cherub Rock” (#5): Unlike dredg, this time I can and I will blame you pop posters and countryheads. I’m just going to abbreviate it to “pops” and “cunts” from now on, just to shorten it. I don’t give a rat’s ass if you don’t like Corgan’s voice, from an objective standpoint this is one of the most praised albums of the 1990s and if you can’t see that then I don’t know what to tell you. Country fans should be used to weird voices in your genre anyways.
17. “Innuendo” (#22): No problems with it going out right now, now only if we could expunge the other oldies, because they overstayed their welcome by a lot. Fuck the fucking oldies. I have no sympathy for them.
Oh god this is totally going to be my #1 isn’t it. If it is, middle finger to the popsters, and also fuck the oldies for lasting this long.
16. “Beds Are Burning” (#24): I can live with this. Good song about racism of the Native Australians, but personally I didn’t love it, even though objectively it’d be a lot higher.
15. “Siberia” (#19): Aw, no. I ranked this lower but still would have liked to see this underdog is way to the top 10.
This is “Forgot About Dre” isn’t it. For a rap song I’m surprised it lasted this long.
14. “Beauty School” (#11): Oh, it’s not. I didn’t even rank this top 10, but I still love this song. “Sextape” would have been in my Top 5 if it had been included like I originally thought it was.
13. “Forgot About Dre” (#4): Ah, there it is. This song is still fire. Can’t complain, though, because it is a rap song and there are so many rap haters in this, and it still almost made Top 10.
Can we seriously start getting rid of the oldies now? I feel like other people ranked them high due to “objectivity”, but I have no sympathy for them and I ranked mine subjectively this time. These songs are beloved, but they are not that good to me. If “Grapevine” and “Guitar” are the next two songs out I would be ecstatic.
Ok this is my #1 isn’t it. Goddamnit, so close to finish line. And if this is it, fuck the Beatles and fuck Marvin Gaye. 12. “Pyramids” (#12): P-P-P-Perfect ranking x4! My aforementioned statements about the Beatles and Marvin Gaye still stand. Disgusted that they made the top 10. I’ll start calling them the BEATles and Marvin Gay from now on, because John Lennon BEAT his wife and Marvin Gay added an “e” to his birthname to avoid the obvious joke. Marvin Gay is his real name people. The “e” is a Hollywood disguise.
Ok, #11 better not be mine, or else I’m gonna flip shit. I’ve had so many scares today and it would kill me to see it fall just before the Top 10. I could totally see Daryl rank my #1 at his #6 too, so that is scary. Hopefully it’s the BEATles, because I could see people ranking them at #1 just for legacy purposes.
11. The Red (#9): Okay, good it’s not. Holy crap, I’m so ecstatic that my #1 actually made the Top 10. I knew it had an uphill battle, but I didn’t think that it would actually happen. Holy crap. I’m practically ejaculating with excitement right now. This is crazy. This also means that maybe the pop/country posters liked it as well, which would be the biggest surprise of all.
- Any songs in the top ten that surprise you? The BEATles, Marvin Gay, The Fear
- What song in the 11-20 range are you most disappointed to see miss the top ten? Bug Eyes, The Red, Forgot About Dre, Cherub Rock - my Top 10s
- Care to predict the top ten? Nope.
- Care to pick the runaway #1? Still going with Black Hole Sun.
Man, people love the oldies more than I do. Guess I’ll have to live with it.
“Bug Eyes” has really been resonating with me on a lyrical level. I can’t stop listening to it now. I feel all the words 100%. That’s not good. Not good at all. Kill me quickly.
Bring back those good ol' days Nothin' feels right, nothin' ever goes my way I threw my future away, now, I walk alone Out here in the cold wanderin' astray. Where's my future?
It's been ten years strong, that's much too long It's time to do something good for my health Time to do something good for myself
As for the top 10: 1, 6, 7, 8, 14, 15, 20, 26, 30. 26 and 30 are Marvin Gay and the BEATles.
10. “The Man Who Sold the World” (#20): Great song - but I don’t have the personal attachment to this that would rank it higher for me. It’s still wonderful, though, so #20 is not a slight.
9. “Red Sky” (#1): The fact that it made it to the top 10 surprised me. One person who ranked this top 10 surprised me by doing so and as a result I will not shit on you in the next rankdown because of it (jk, I’m probably gonna renege on this). I thought this would go out soon after Bug Eyes did, but you guys made me proud.
8. “Good Vibrations” (#14): I do not like the oldies… but I do like this one. “God Only Knows” is even better.
7. “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” (#30): Not a BEATles fan. Never have been, never will be. I do like some songs by them, and this one was good, but not good enough to justify anything higher than this.
6. “The Fear” (#23): Surprisingly it landed this high. Would have preferred to see it out ages ago but I’ll take it here.
5. “Space Dementia” (#8): Far from my favorite song on Origin of Symmetry, but it’s still fucking awesome.
4. “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” (#26): And there goes Gay Marvin! While it is an oldie, this one ain’t all that bad, although I like Sexual Healing substantially better. Also, props to Daryl for putting Marvin Gay and the BEATles in the bottom 5! Awesome! Rise Against the oldies!
3. “All Apologies” (#7): What else can I say… Everyone is gay! Even Marvin, because his birthname was spelled that way. That was a poor attempt at rhyming. Forget that. I will hold my stake that Nirvana are almost as overrated as The BEATles, but this is one of my favorites from them.
I’m still thinking “Black Hole Sun” takes this.
2. “In the End” (#15) 1. “Black Hole Sun” (#6) Yeah, I’m glad Black Hole Sun won, since I had it as my pick since Day One, and because it’s the better song, and because In the End already won the LP rankdown, which it shouldn’t have.
Also there’s something morbidly poetic about the top 2 both featuring the singers who killed themselves this year. And now I’m sad again so forget that thought.

Oh noez people like pop music da world is ovah!!11 Jesus F ucking Christ. How many f ucking times do I need to say this? I don't give a f ucking sh it if you like pop music. You're perfectly allowed to have your own taste. Just don't bring it into the f ucking rankdown. This isn't even a rock-only thing, because the same thing happens in rap rankdowns as well. There's more than enough pop rankdowns to participate in. Stick to them. It's not about taste, it's about lack of education. It's like if I went into a country rankdown and ranked all the bro-country at the top and all the complex good stuff at the bottom. That would be stupid and go against what the country board agrees as good and bad. (this is a toned-down version of my original post, so you can imagine how vitriolic that one was)

That may be true, but even still, wouldn't it, thus, be a little silly for me to "stay in my lane" and just do rock rankdowns if I do know, listen to, and enjoy songs from outside of the rock spectrum? Hell, I took part in Will's rankdown, and I probably knew half the songs before I decided to take part and listen to them all. Should I not have taken part in that rankdown because I knew half of the songs beforehand? Besides, I always like to talk about broadening horizons and listening to more than one style of music (because it's fun discovering music you haven't listened to before, etc.), but what will telling people to stick to their own genre and that genre's rankdowns do? Because it certainly won't inspire them to educate themselves and listen to more music genres, that's for sure.

Likewise, there are some pop-leaning posters who I feel the same for participating in Alt/Rock rankdowns.
