If one zombie shows up this early, people will have some explaining to do. :(

Only one month after Charles Manson committed an extremely grisly murder scene and blamed it on his misunderstanding of what a Helter Skelter is (it's a British term for a playground ride), The Beatles released Abbey Road and this song that did almost the exact opposite, making a much more lyrically pointed song about a deranged med-student turned serial killer but disguising it behind a super cheerful, almost childlike wall of production. Just cute enough to escape the bottom five, but not much more. All of the group except for McCartney (the composer) hated this song btw. Paul made a comment about spending three days to work on it, but Ringo had a very different version of events: "It was the worst track we ever had to record. It went on for f**king weeks." LMAO

If given the choice between one zombie to fight off or a whole bunch of zombies, you'd think the average person would pick one. But Red wanted the bunch and good for him, he got it! We'll see where the lone zombie shows up later.

God, I really wanted to like "Dracula's Wedding" more than I did, but I just can't. Even as a Beatles fanboy, even with the song itself being on my favorite Beatles album ever, I don't think that "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" is one of their best. Eh, can't say that I'm surprised that "Zombies" is bottom ten, though I do like it quite a bit. And yes, obviously, it's preferable to what the OTHER option would have been.

"Dracula's Wedding" deserved better. Honestly I don't get the appeal Childish Gambino has, "Redbone" sucks imo and "Zombies" was an uninteresting song.

Willapted stops the bleeding and gets rid of one of his bottom five here. I picked this song for the title, but now that I think about I really don't know why I thought this song fit. This is lyrically probably the least creepy song on the whole list (and if not for Maxwell's Silver Hammer would be the least creepy sounding one, too). Ah, well! I still love it though.

The first horror movie I saw when I was a kid was Nightmare on Elm Street and it seems dumb now - the special effects are laughable and his face looks more like the victim of a hot fork scraped across soft plastic than any kind of violent slashing or burning - but it was enough to fuck a 6-7 year old little rose up and now adult rose does not do horror, with certain exceptions (Scream series and very old Hitchcock films come to mind). I love Halloween but I hate horror movies, especially the gory ones, b/c I don't know how to shut my brain off so I stay up all night thinking about them. And then this was a character that kills you in your sleep? So now I really have a reason to be wide awake lol.

Next set of five, in no particular order: the Devil makes his first appearance on the rankdown and brings some followers along for the ride; another ghost that doesn't really have anything to do with ghosts whatsoever; another murderer, depending on the version; and a couple of witchy women (one of whom has the highest standard deviation of the rankdown) to bookend the set

I know that on first blush this song doesn't make ANY kind of sense for a Halloween rankdown, but I picked this track because Kat gives me hella witchy woman/maneater seductress vibes on this and I just love it. I have a whole video concept in my head for this (that will never be made of course).

So far just one of my top 20s have left too early: Heathens! :( I heard Nightmare for the first listen for this RD, and I liked the music and instrumentation behind it. Interesting surprise to me, and in a way surprised it ended up being very low. Haunt, Runnin' with the Devil and Appetite were also first listens. Good discoveries :)

Tanya Tucker version: I thought I had linked to Garth's audio on Youtube in the OP, but when I was going through my YT playlist later I realized it was a cover of the song. The original video is on Vimeo but the quality is a bit eh. Tanya's great so she's hardly a poor substitute, and there's a reason I included her audio as well. Garth had the second-highest standard deviation in the rankdown, which I could say is because it's a country song, but it's just as likely due to him being such an annoying butt about his music that you can't find it anywhere unless you sign up for his (aptly named) GhostTunes. Literally the only person I ever would have tolerated these kinds of shenanigans from is Prince, and even Prince wasn't so bad about it that he made it super inconvenient to buy his stuff. It's particularly annoying b/c the reason I picked this song is because of a third verse that Garth omitted from his recorded version, where his angry wife reaches into her dresser drawer for a pistol "'Cause tonight will be the last time, she'll wonder where he's been." I mentioned in a comment to Dr. Indie that this rankdown was originally going to be a murder and mayhem theme and that last verse fell right in line with it, along with the song's production having a pretty ominous feel to it. After changing the theme to be a bit more kitschy, I still wanted to keep TTR in it. The third verse actually originates with Tanya - the song was pitched to her in 1990 or '91 and her producer suggested adding another verse to it. Tanya liked it, but dropped it from her album's final track list for some reason (she eventually released it in 1995 on a box set, with all three verses); when Garth picked it back up for himself his producer recommended scrapping the added lyrics. But Garth always sang that third verse in concert, thus it can be found on his Double Live album, and it was wildly popular with his fans. The video also has an amazing story behind it - long story short, it's a critique of domestic violence that initially got banned by CMT and TNN in the most asinine of ways, until buzz about it became deafening and forced those networks' hands. Other media outlets started requesting copies of the video so they could screen and review it themselves, and Garth's label started receiving calls from women's shelters thanking them for shining a light on such a serious issue. So it boggles the mind that he would go through such lengths to hold this video back from the public.

Maxwell's Silver Hammer - Just another medical student going crazy. I like how they disguised lyrics by catchy and not at all scary melody.

Another song where I got too caught up in the title to think about the fact that this song isn't all that creepy or even about literal ghosts. It's about a woman who sells her soul out for fame and materialism only to realize her 'victory' is as hollow as she is...which is a terrifying thought in a way, but that's not quite the kind of scary we're looking for here. This song belongs on my 'Welcome to Hollywood' playlist more.

"The Thunder Rolls" deserved better but I also am not surprised to see it out so early either. Love this song. Wasn't in my Top 10 because I felt that the 10 in my Top 10 deserved it more in this rankdown

I miscounted earlier when I said the highest standard deviation was coming in the 'next set of five.' It's coming up next tho! It kind of has something in common with Kat's Appetite, thematically.

45. Beatles - Maxwell's Silver Hammerbang bang Maxwell's Silver Hammer. Tis a guilty pleasure of mine. The Beatles where known for masking the actual vibe of their songs. The actual movie is a one of my favorites. Nothing beats Steve Martin as Dr. Maxwell Edison. 44. Outkast - Dracula's WeddingNot really a fan of this song. Cool theme tho. 43. Childish Gambino - ZombiesI love anything to do with Zombies. Even bad b-movies starring Danny Trejo. Anyway, the music in this song was pretty old school too. 42. BANKS - HauntSurprisingly, I kinda dug this one. It's pretty poppy, so maybe I was just in a good mood that day? 41. J azzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince - A Nightmare On My Street. For all the grief I give today's rappers, I actually think Will Smith is one of the best rappers of all time, and I can listen to him all day long. This is important* He never sounded angry nor evil. BTW, this song is perfect for the witching season. It deserves a much higher rank that this. 40. Katherine McPhee - AppetiteNot much of a Halloween vibe, but if she appeared at my door; I would surley let her eat me up. But seriously; I really loved her vocal tones too. 39. Twenty One Pilots - HeathensEveryone who knows me , knows how much I hate this song. Especially for charting on Active Rock chart, but somehow it did not make the bottom of my list. 38. Van Halen - Runnin' With The DevilNot much of a Halloween vibe here, but you included the song, so what am I supposed to do with it, but rank it super high? It's Freaking Van Halen, man. 37. Garth Brookes - The Thunder RollsMurder and Mayhem works for me. I'm more of a gore hound, but i got no problem with country and this one has some really great guitar works. 36. Broken Bells - The Ghost InsideThe music in this is the highlight of the song. Sort of Indie creepy. So the theme here is just what every Pop star does. See their soul to the dark prince.
