Very enjoyable video. As for the song- not among my favorites by her, but other than that- does anyone else hear a similarity in the chorus to "You Showed Me"? I thought of that more than Right Said Fred.

I can't recall the last time I've seen people on my social media SO PRESSED. Jesus.
Someone actually said the line "I don't like your kingdom keys, they once belonged to me" was so white supremacist. Crazy.

I can't get this song out of my head! Glad to see Katy fans enjoying the song! Finally someone mature I can't recall the last time I've seen people on my social media SO PRESSED. Jesus. Not surprised... people can be really retarded when picking something to hate on Taylor lol The irony.

Sigh I apologize for the word used. I meant it as "stupid", I admit it was a bad choice of words.

This song is such a good song to just leave on repeat. As I said before, the ending just lines up perfectly with the start

With how heavily Urban AM charts lean, I thought this would have a big debut and then sink. Does anyone know the last time a pop song was #1 on Apple Music before this? Maybe "Shape of You"?

I'm not familiar with how Urban Apple Music leans, but maybe TS's success there is because a lot of her hardcore fans have AM since last era they weren't able to stream it on Spotify? I mean I'm sure most fans bought the album, but the ones who didn't may have subscribed to AM and never left? I feel like I even made a conscious decision to choose Apple just for that fact. (Also could just be that this song is huge).

You know, as much as I love to sit back and watch records be broken and see any female artist come in and slay the game like this, I can't help but think how much more enjoyable it would be if the song was actually great. Like if this was happening with "Style" or "Blank Space," I'd be like YAAAASSSSSS. But this song is still just okay, so I'm kinda just like EH, that's nice.

People really get offended for nothing these days. You all understood what I meant, I don't know why you need to create drama over this tbh lol

Sigh I apologize for the word used. I meant it as "stupid", I admit it was a bad choice of words. thank you for apologizing! Lots of people on here are quick to call out people for saying the wrong thing, of course no one politely replies when you correct your mistake. The people on here remind me of Xan's Columbia University rowing friends from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Anyway, this song is getting to me, in a good way. I never thought that in an age where it seems EVERY female pop star is having an identity crisis, Taylor would give me looks on looks and hot choreography. And acknowledging the bad things people say about her at the end? Wow, I am really impressed. Who would have thought Taylor would give me what I wanted from Katy?!

You said a word you shouldn't have, people called you out on it and you apologised. It was dropped. Sure there were two people who replied but they replied with jokes and you could have easily ignored that. Just drop it. I find it so funny when people complain about people being offended, when that person who is complaining is the one who is offended. Also, no one made a big deal out of it, especially after you apologised so you might want to double check the sequence of events

While I love this song, "Style" and "Blank Space" deserved bigger success; especially the former. BS did get 7 wks at #1 tho.

This probably won't have the longevity of either of those songs, and 'Style' transcends radio success as the true middle-class suburban retail playlist mainstay. Honestly the success is largely due to Taylor being so fucking massive. This could have been literally anything, not that that takes away from the point being made. Just an observation of how far good PR and daddy's money can take you.

Things to keep in mind:
- They knew this would be at least somewhat polarizing. Scratch somewhat: It was ENGINEERED to be polarizing. (Contrast this with the much more universal Shake it Off, which needed to accomplish something different when it was released. It's not brought up, but there's a reason why they didn't lead with "Style", and we know it's not because Shake It Off is a better song.)
- They're aware of the backlash. They did just watch Katy Perry crash and burn.
- There's a conspicuous amount of time between now and the album release.
I guarantee you the strategy for launching a project isn't as simple and delineative as "release our biggest hope of a smash and see how far it takes us".
The thing to look for is if things happen that DON'T seem to be according to plan. So far, there is absolutely NOTHING that has happened to indicate this isn't going EXACTLY how her team wants it. So even if the public stays cool on it and it doesn't have a terribly long shelf life, what needed to happen, happened: Taylor changing her image, releasing a statement that took the world by storm, that proved her MASSIVE force in the industry, and notches many quantifiable metrics of success.... Everything seems to be going according to plan.
Taylor succeeds because her material is good and connects. That's why I'm enjoying seeing all these people pressed and writing think pieces. The irony of Taylor being seen as someone that hijacked upon X or used Y gimmick for fame is that, at the end of the day, the reason for her being so massive is due to what matters most in the end: the music.
I (definitely) like Katy Perry. I really liked Chained to the Rhythm. But she is ABSOLUTELY someone that didn't have her sound aligned with her out-of-date image coupled with music that just didn't back it up, nor a back catalogue that had staying power the way Taylor's old stuff does. (People go back to Red. They don't go back to Prism. C'mon now.) There's a reason Katy Perry crashed and burned and is now a meme of her former self.
Back to Taylor, really, people can be as pressed as they want: she's always faced resistance by some big segment of listeners at *every* step of her career. She wins out because her material is great and connects. As long as she continues doing that, it really doesn't matter about the drama.
And she already knows that.
That's the point of the car crash scene. You see the media frenzy every time Taylor crashes and burns, but she emerges unscathed because her music is good: hence the Grammy.
It's for the public to realize.

Just an observation of how far good PR and daddy's money can take you. If it were only good PR and daddy's money there would be a lot more of "Taylor Swifts" I mean in this moment. Right now I'd say she's at a pivotal point in her career where she's either going to go the way of Gaga circa Born This Way and fall off hard, or she's the next Madonna. She's attempting to come back from a pretty high profile smear campaign that all but shot her public image, yet is still seeing reasonable success with this. I'd wager that is largely because she had a video with a budget some full length feature films won't get, the song is being thrown at everyone who actively uses a radio or unpaid streaming service, and it's being used in advertising campaigns at launch. When you've got that much going for you, PR nightmare or not, you'd have to be Chris Brown not to get a guaranteed hit (on pop, anyway). She needed that push, too. Where she goes after this is going to depend a lot on how well (or... not) this song is received. She's relying a lot on unproven trends with it, and I don't want to say one way or the other how this will go over, but I will say to her credit she's playing her part like a true professional. This is where you're half-right; it's going to take more than money (not PR; PR and marketing is career defining) to really sell her to the public right now, but if anyone can do that it's Taylor f**king Swift. I fully expect the followup single to be a conventional pop hit if this goes south fast, and I don't doubt for one second that the label will drop it immediately if necessary.

Oh, I think you have it sincerely backwards.
What Taylor has the privilege of doing (and I read this somewhere, too, it's a known take) is because of her innocent country background, she gets to put out music and sounds that always seem like a big leap for HER, but are totally in line with contemporary trends.
This song may be a lot of things, and yeah there are risks here sonically for sure, but "unproven trends"? Come on. This isn't *experimental*. It fits right in with radio.
