I'm the last person to say that a song that's successful on Pop is already a hit
But people are saying this is a flop because it's losing its bullet on POP - yet it was #1 for three weeks! I mean some pop queens can't even stay in the Top 10 for that long  :sip2:
Also Cardi B is not considered a flop by the same people than say Taylor flops because her song is not Top 3 on Pop - I mean ... irony anybody?

Context needs to be your friend.
Being a smash doesn't only mean peak - it means longevity. This song came out only a month ago. I'll refrain from calling it a flop but considering the name attached, campaign behind it, and the fact that Pop is Taylor's core format I wouldn't exactly get super excited over its performance either.

And why would Cardi be expected to outpeform Taylor on TAYLOR's format? "Bodak Yellow" is a pop success because it crossed over from another format - its own- where its performance is what anyone would dream of. There's no Pop marketing campaign behind it and Cardi has no history with the format, so any little movement it makes here is successful. You seriously can't see the difference?

One month is already a lot compared to other songs that peak and fall very quickly 
I think this won't have longetivity - its performance in NZ was 1-1-4-9 and they LOOVE Taylor so

But stalling out on your core radio format barely a month after your single drops is not a good look, 3-week record-breaking Hot 100 #1 or not.

For something with "unimaginable" sales, "selling higher than every artist not named Adele", it should probably be at least above 60k on its first month...

But I've learned in this thread that apparently peaks are all that matter.

This basically illustrates my supposed dramatics regarding this song's chart performance. Sales are going down. Streams are going down. If it stalls out on radio now, with all three components on a downward turn the song could potentially go racing down the chart as quickly as it came up. With the album out in November, this dying weeks beforehand is not an ideal situation. The smear campaign would effectively write itself.

Terrible song. Why Taylor Swift felt the need to go this direction is beyond me. But, artists do this all the time (change their bread and butter in the name of being "edgy" or "maturing"). And it doesn't have a high success rate, as history has shown us.

Eh. Creative types get tired of the formula after a while. It happens. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. She’s earned the right to try something new after multiple successful albums.

For some reason, the song and video always made me think they only really intended this song to make headlines and last until Halloween. I'm guessing there's gonna be a new song released shortly afterwards.
