Short term vs. Long term. I mean...the short term is that certain parts of twitter will do exactly what we knew all along what they were going to do, and the long run is that Justin is going to rake money from his tour and have an album campaign that, while getting respectable statistics, won't leave the same impact as his prior ones. The fact that he could’ve brought out both Jay and Bey but didn’t. 😩 Imagine if the projection was Beyoncé instead with her part on UTEOT . Certain parts is quite the understatement. He's getting an almost universal negative response.

I just watched and it was just okay for me. There were a few moments that were memorable in terms of I will remember those, but they aren't gasp-worthy moments like when Beyonce did "Formation" live 2 years ago or Madonna arriving like Cleopatra 6 years ago, or when Diana Ross left in a helicopter at the end of "Take Me Higher". And no shocking moments either. I was entertained, but it was just there. I thought the performance felt too much like something done at an awards show. There was just not enough actual singing for most of it. The backing track could be heard a lot and Justin barely had the microphone near his mouth yet the lead vocal kept playing. I wonder if he forgot in the moment to hold the mic there or that was the plan all along. The few live parts were decent. If you're going to lip, do it convincingly. If you're not even going to bother to move your mouth to pretend that you are singing, then that's not okay. And if you are really going to lip, go into the studio and record brand new vocals to lip to. Same with all the backing stuff. Don't just use the original studio versions from 30 years ago. BITCH YOU DON'T SOUND LIKE THAT ANYMORE. Sorry, I have that same bone to pick with Sandra (of "Maria Magdalena" fame) because she still uses the original studio versions from then. The dancing was passable in some parts. I liked that little dance break in the middle. If he had to do choreography, it didn't have to be complicated, but it also shouldn't have looked so lazy. At one point it looked like he was doing the Elaine dance. The staging was really odd. What was that? There was no structure to speak of. Most of the previous halftime shows had some semblance of a stage. The choice of songs was interesting. It's strange that he did only one new song from the new CD and it was that particular one and just did older songs for the rest of it. It's also interesting he didn't do any from the 2nd CD of The 20/20 Experience. I wonder if he skipped over that one because it didn't do that well or none of the songs went with the show? I was surprised that he didn't do "LoveStoned" because that would have gone over well. I didn't like the arrangement for "Sexyback". It was too abrupt and jarring. I saw what he did with "Rock Your Body" and I can see why he did it because everyone would have dragged him for doing that line at the end of the chorus because of what happened the last time (though it might have been better not to do that song to just avoid bringing it up). I liked the arrangement for "Cry Me A River" but it was too short. The ending with "Can't Stop The Feeling!" was just right. My favorite moment was when he did "Until The End Of Time" but in the back of my mind, I had a feeling that it would be the lead in to some sort of a Prince tribute because the original album version of that song contains a drum loop throughout it that resembles the one heard in "When Doves Cry". I never expected him to do that particular song during his SB show because the general public doesn't know that one. On the subject of the Prince segment. As one of his longtime fans, it was nice that he devoted a moment to him especially being in his home state. I know everyone was up in arms about a hologram, video screen, or projection of Prince in any capacity, but I thought it was tasteful. The new generation should get to know Prince and his amazing body of work. It's not like he got up there and started humping or stomping the Prince projection. The pacing of the show was strange too. There were too many pauses and transitions. You think that something amazing is about to happen and then, "That's it?!" Overall, the show was disappointing. There were so many opportunities to better utilize this performance slot. He could have had a proper stage. Utilized the orchestra, drumline, and dancers more effectively. The setlist could have been more focused and flowed better. There should have been less transitions. Perhaps he was the wrong performer for a show of this nature. His regular concerts and other performances are usually quite impressive and full of energy but all of what makes those shows so great was not here and that's a damn shame. It's funny that he said recently that artists with Vegas residencies are probably heading towards retirement and stuff, he has to be reminded that most if not all of those performers actually put on a show with more energy. Bette Midler, Britney Spears, Celine Dion, Cher, Jennifer Lopez, and Marie Osmond all really put on a show with so much intensity. If Justin had a Vegas show with the type of energy that he showcased in today's performance and word got out about it, people won't come anymore. Britney's infamous MTV performance of "Gimme More" may have been a mess, but she still had far more focus and stage presence and better utilization of that performance slot than Justin did during this show. There I said it.

Also the thread title needs to be changed because Prince had the whole stadium screaming adlibs in the middle of a monsoon.

Justin Timberlake's Super Bowl halftime show reminds world of why it fell in love with him Telegraph+ "Paying tribute to Prince was something JT highlighted as an important moment for this show, and we spent quite a bit of time ensuring this moment would be true to his legacy. Ultimately, Justin decided that the only person who could do Prince justice is Prince."

I will go with my kids review of this. A little boring up until the last song or two. Lots of songs crammed into 12 minutes.
The Prince tribute was very appropriate, although it seemed a little out of place with his performance. (Minneapolis was all about honoring 'Prince' in the two weeks leading up to the Super Bowl - every artist with a Prince connection performed a free concert --- So for JT to do a quick tribute seemed fitting)

I approve so greatly of society's willingness to examine JT more critically now than it has for most of the past 15 years, during which time he benefited mightily from some #strangenewrespect to become an almost untouchable pop star (right up there with Bey).
The criticism he's enduring tonight for the Janet slight is heartening, as is the widely accepted view that his performance was meh.
I haven't listened to the new album, but assuming the marketing is irony-free, it's among the cheesiest, most shocking and transparently cheap gimmicks I have ever seen; I cringed when I heard about the "going back to the woods" trope and I keep cringing every time I think about it. Who does he think he's fooling and impressing?

The Pluses: - He jammed a lot of songs in his set - No forced features
The Negatives: - Started off with incredibly poor audio - RYB was a terrible idea - Singing to Prince - he could've just danced - Lackluster production - it felt like an awards show, it didn't have that 'larger than life' on the biggest US music stage.
As I stated here before the SB, I wasn't really excited about his performance, despite liking a lot of his catalog, so I felt as expected.

The show was ok, nothing memorable but noyhing awful either. It just didn't go anywhere.
However, as an artist he's so lost right now. Bruno Mars has totally stolen JT's position in the pop field and the new album is a disaster compared to the 10-track quality 24K Magic delivers.
I have seen him live twice (2007 and 2014) and he hasn't found anything new so I believe all the decline is just natural progression when he hasn't been able to evolve.

And he didn't even perform Say Something which was his best chances of getting a hit. Girl is delusional. And it’s still performing the best on iTunes, even placing higher than the discounted Filthy

My dream is a Rihanna Superbowl with Cardi part of it. My I don't give a f**k bitches just not giving a f**k is far better than this s**t tonight!
Katy Perry even put this one to shame.

I have class soon so I didn’t stay up to watch but my brother did. I didn’t know about the Janet thing until I joined here (I didn’t even know the Halftime Show existed until Bruno’s), and my brother didn’t know about it until a week ago when I told him about it. He said the performance was very average and said it was pretty hard to hear him at times. After that and reading through some comments here, I’m wondering if it is even worth my while watching it later or just skipping to Mirrors and leaving it there.. I opened it, heard Filthy and turned it off. I also watched the Rock My Body part. Ugh he looked so smug during the “stop!”
I wonder who will perform it next year. If Taylor ever ends the Coke deal I can see them asking her. Maybe Ed Sheeran?

Justin Timberlake Is The New Face Of Dad-Pop Controversies aside, have we stopped to consider that maybe he's just corny?www.huffingtonpost.ca/entry/justin-timberlake-face-of-dad-pop_us_5a773631e4b06ee97af3c599Justin Timberlake’s halftime show performance drew attention and controversy before he even hit the field on Sunday night, mostly because of two things: Janet Jackson, and his increasingly tenuous relationship with black people. Last year, Timberlake caught heat when he decided to weigh in on black issues on Twitter, making an “All Lives Matter” pitch that prompted many black social media users to not only call him out but question his authenticity: Hadn’t he, after all, built an entire career by essentially copying black music, black dance, and black swag? Then there was the infamous “wardrobe malfunction,” in which, many people argued, Timberlake managed to emerge largely unscathed while Janet Jackson’s career took a heavy and humiliating hit, partially because he failed to come to her defense in the wake of the scandal. These things certainly did not help Timberlake’s pop culture standing. Nor did his recent rebranding as a “Man of the Woods” for his forthcoming album ― a hodgepodge of rustic, down-home Tennessee imagery of Timberlake in the nature wearing artfully weathered denims and confusing singles like “Filthy” which sound, for the most part, like watered down versions of the tracks he’s been making for the last 10 years. Timberlake’s halftime show, then, had a lot riding on it. Not only was the performance a chance for him to reconcile with black fans and perhaps atone for his perceived sins against Janet Jackson (who, on Sunday, was celebrated on Twitter with the #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay hashtag as a kind of protest), but also to establish his new era and persona which, up until now, has been vague at best, nonsensical at worst. Timberlake achieved none of these things in what was, for the most part, a perfectly adequate show. Adequate, teetering on forgettable. Despite the undercurrent of possible controversy, the most striking thing about Timberlake’s show was how carefully it tiptoed around anything taboo. Dressed in a camouflage suit and red banana kerchief, Timberlake danced and sang to all his best bangers of yesteryear, including “SexyBack,” “Cry Me A River,” and “My Love” ― pop tunes infused with hip-hop and R&B cool. But the songs, censored and edited down for prime time, felt sanitized. The show was punctuated by a much-discussed and criticized tribute: a projection of the late singer Prince singing ‘I Would Die 4 U’ while Timberlake accompanied on piano, right before a wide overhead shot of the stadium and surrounding area bathed in a warm purple light and The Purple One’s symbol. This, too, was a gesture that was adequate, safe, and just fine ― an appropriate way to honor and hold space for an iconic black performer without having to acknowledge Ms. Jackson. The rest of the medley was a blur of less memorable Timberlake hits, including backup dancers who looked like extras from a Gap or United Colors of Benetton ad, and a final moment where Timberlake, among the crowd, bellowed “Supa Bowl Selfies!” as a young fan in the audience snapped a picture with him. This last moment was what really cemented Timberlake’s place as the new face of dad-pop ― when every older millennial who went through high school grooving to “Justified” realized that they are officially old. Dad-pop consists of releasing a song called “Filthy” that isn’t really filthy, mostly just mediocre. Dad-pop is lyrics like: “I’ll be the wood when you need heat/I’ll be the generator, turn me on when you need electricity.” Dad-pop is releasing a song on the “Trolls” soundtrack. For the past several months, there’s been so much speculation about what’s going on with Timberlake’s new album, about why his popularity has seemed to wane. It’s really not that complicated. He has a great catalogue of music. He’s a talented performer. He put on an entertaining, if cheesy show. But Timberlake, like all pop stars (especially white pop stars who cull much of their inspiration and persona from black culture), got old and corny. And that’s perfectly fine. Many artists, from U2 to Eminem, reach this moment of dad-i-fication, when they’re at the pinnacle of their careers, yes, but also simultaneously irrelevant to the culture. They sell out stadiums and concert halls, but the people who populate these arenas are not the ones who dictate what is “cool.” This is not an indictment of Timberlake, but merely an observation. In this way, Timberlake’s halftime show was especially fascinating. Not because of the show itself but all that it represents ― the passage of time, our changing politics, and the stark and subtle differences between 2004 and 2018. But perhaps the most interesting thing about Timberlake’s just OK halftime show was that, for those still salty about how he handled the whole Janet Jackson scandal, this was in a way the ultimate revenge. Timberlake’s incredibly safe performance, not only mired in the past and his own awkward comeback, also highlighted the fact that the wardrobe malfunction moment was perhaps the last time he actually ever did anything exciting.

I'm currently at 4:14 and I was pretty sure I'd watched like 2/3 of it.
It seems rushed and empty. His vocals are super weak. Going to watch my golden trio (Bey, Katy, Gaga) next to remember how a Halftime Show's supposed to be.

It felt like it was 30 minutes long. Nearly every single felt like it was the same performance for each. The piano/Prince thing was the only thing that split up the monotonous feel to it. Very boring.

CACKLING @ how bad this was! Between the RYB fiasco and the lies about the hologram, he just digged his own grave.
And good for Jimmy Fallon supporting his friend. Now he can live the same fate with him.
