What is the controversy with the song?
Anyway, he aged horribly. Yikes
As for the half time show, it was a snooze

What is the controversy with the song? He sang "Rock Your Body" at the Super Bowl while he was headliner Janet Jackson's guest. He literally ripped off her clothing during the "have you naked by the end of the song" lyric (she had a pastie covering her nipple). She was banned and blacklisted, he got off the hook quite easily. Quite tacky and brazen that he'd perform that actual song again at this venue.

halftime show artist is brought on so people will tune in. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case.. It's all up to the teams. People clearly did tune in for Justin either way since the halftime had better ratings than the game. For those curious: 2012: Madonna 114.0 million / Game 111.3 million (+2.426%; +2.7 million) 2013: Beyoncé 104.0 million / Game 108.4 million (-4.059%; -4.4 million) 2014: Bruno 115.3 million / Game 111.5 million (+3.408%; +3.8 million) 2015: Katy 118.5 million / Game 114.4 million (+3.584%; +4.1 million) 2016: Coldplay 115.5 million / Game 111.9 million (+3.003%; +3.6 million) 2017: Gaga 117.5 million / Game 111.3 million (+5.571%; +6.2 million) 2018: Justin 106.6 million / Game 103.4 million (+3.095%; +3.2 million) ...that isn't that remarkable as it happens quite often. By percentage of increase relative to the game, Justin marginally brought in more people than Coldplay. By sheer numbers, he brought in less than anyone else in the past five years (including Coldplay, which... I mean...). Of course it could have been worse. Beyoncé actually saw a slight decrease between her performance and the game in 2013. I'd like to go back further, but I can't find any article detailing the Black Eyed Peas's halftime show performance ratings. Just that it was "up from the previous year." Whoop-dee-do.

Gagging @ that Carrie Underwood song cockblocking all of Justin’s tracks. Mommas getting vengeance for Janet and Brit! I understand Janet, but how was Britney wronged by Justin? I thought she was cheating on him, is that wrong? She cheated with Wade Robson, they broke up, and then he went on 20/20 and talked about their sex life. Also, the CMAR video was a blatant dis to her. (FWIW, Britney responded with Everytime.) Cheating or not, it was perceived by some as really tacky of him to publicly drag her name through the mud like that...made all the worse by profiting off it via CMAR. It's also suspected that What Goes Around was about her too (that was around the time Britney's relationship with Kevin Federline ended IIRC). Put in terms younger millennials might understand, he was the original Taylor Swift.

More specifically, wasn't he directly responsible for telling the public that she wasn't a virgin? This was during the launch of his solo debut when he needed to shake off the N Sync/boyband stigma. So his means of doing this was by gaining frat boy credibility at Britney's expense. I wonder how well this would have gone over during the #TimesUp times. I think the public's reaction to that interview, Nipplegate, and ultimately his legacy would have gone very differently had he launched 10-15 years later.

Guess what, Justin: I don't think you're cute and I don't think you're funny. #bye

I finally watched the show and something about it felt weirdly budget. It almost doesn't make sense to say that - obviously money had to be spent on that godforsaken hologram, and the stage setup was pretty fancy. But for some reason this show felt cheap in comparison to all of the 'modern' halftime shows (and a lot of the not-so-modern ones, tbh). Prince's stage alone eats JT's entire existence.
The camera work played a big part in this. Justin's stage wasn't that big, so focusing everything in the center of the field made everything feel insular. There was one brief moment in Mirrors where things started to feel expansive, but then the camera panned out and showed everything was in the center of the field, re-emphasizing that insular vibe. The 'mirrors' themselves weren't especially cool looking or used in a visually unique way. Then when a bunch of dancers came in to take up all the empty field space during CSTF, Justin ran into the audience and took the camera focus with him, basically defeating the purpose of having anyone on the field at all.
There were some obligatory pan shots of the stadium but overall this did not feel like a grand SB affair at all. It's almost like he blew all his Pepsi sponsor money on the hologram and didn't have enough left over to hire sound tech and camera guys who knew or cared what they were doing.
Entrance and exit were also not very special...I know, I know, it's hard to think of anything unique after appearing amidst clouds of smoke, swan diving from the roof to the stadium, riding around on a The More You Know lift, and peacing out on a helicopter, but damn, at least try!
None of this touches on his actual performance, but I have nothing to say that hasn't already been said there. It was all passable, hardly memorable. Maybe the biggest silver lining for JT coming out of this is that people will forget it too quickly to bury his career over it.

^^^^ Oh his career will be fine. He's a good looking white man, all he has to do is lay low during his "blacklash" era and he'll be primed for some type of comeback. Nothing will happen to him long term.

New ideas for thread title:
JT's halftime: ratings beat game but less than Gaga
JT's halftime: lowest ratings so far this decade
JT's halftime: ratings beat game but so did Coldplay
JT's halftime: ratings lower than Gaga, Coldplay, even Beyonce whose ratings didn't beat the game

But that's because everybody's mad at Trump, once he's gone folks will go right back to giving them redemption points again. JT will land the right acting role and do his Media Tour of Contrition and be back in mainstream good graces. But black folks are done though. Heh.

I agree with almost everything and totally enjoy reading your thoughts, but that was not a hologram. That was just a projection on a screen. It's not like the hologram Whitney's estate had on the voice that they scrapped. It was just a projection of Prince from the movie, but Justin got vocal stems and cuts from the movie to use from the estate.

If this happened in 2018 his career would be over in two seconds. Thank god, even during the dark days of Trump, the times are changing. Still, I can’t believe the applause he got for that- it wasn’t -too- long ago.

Okay, but she's not saying anything JT did was wrong. -- did she mention that in her FB live, bc I don't get that from this thread of hers. She's not and neither is Prince's family. Prince's sister is defending Justin: Prince wouldn't be pissed at Justin Timberlake for using his image and voice during the Super Bowl halftime show, at least according to Prince's sister who wants JT's haters to back off.
Tyka Nelson tells TMZ she was pleasantly surprised by Timberlake's performance and enjoyed his Prince tribute. She and the rest of Prince's family knew he was planning to sing "I Would Die 4 U."
As for the backlash, Tyka says everyone has their own idea of what Prince would have wanted so it's an impossible position for Justin.
Tyka added her brother was outspoken but wasn't one to hold grudges, referring to the old beef between Prince and JT's beef over "Sexy Back." As she put it, "He said what he said and kept it moving."

I didn't say she was saying JT did anything wrong. I said SHE is apologizing when she doesn't have to. She's apologizing due to the backlash from Justin's actions, not dissimilar to Janet.

Prince's estate clearly beats Whitney's in terms of delusion. Sad.
