This isn't that bad. It's kind of fun to dance to. I do agree that the voice of the lead singer can be a little annoying.

I simply can't listen to "Cotton Eye Joe" anymore. I've heard it way too many times.
Oh, also, P-P-P-P-PERFECT RANKING!...and close to a rare double. :kii:

This isn't that bad. It's kind of fun to dance to. I do agree that the voice of the lead singer can be a little annoying. It's storytime folks. I don't think I shared this before (if I did, it's in one of the Random Thoughts topics). When one of my nieces had her birthday party a few years ago, her mother (my cousin) hired a clown to entertain the kids (and the parents). He was thoroughly entertaining. He did magic tricks, illusions, elaborate balloon animals, and he was funny. I wish I had a clown like this when I was that age. He played some 'kid friendly' music as he set up the tricks and for the intermission (most of it was nursery rhymes and Chipmunks versions of Pop songs). This song was one of them. Some of the kids got into it as did some of the adults. My cousin is a few years older than me and we're into a lot of the same music. She loved this one too. We're grooving and having fun to it but this one kid who was a younger sibling to another guest at the party went totally apeshit bonkers to the song. It was like he was having seizures. He never had them at any time before so it was unexpected and shocking. The kid was violently convulsing and screaming. Something like this but not quite this exaggerated. The clown happened to be trained in First Aid and CPR so he stopped the music and stopped the show to attend to the kid. It was quite a scene. As soon as the music stopped, the kid went back to normal. To this day, it has never been determined if the song in fact caused this, but we were too scared to find out. This put a damper on the party, but the clown finished the show and we had cake.

This is one that I thought for sure would be at the bottom. It was #19 for a little bit of time. #18 Crush - Jellyhead (Motiv8's Pumphouse 7" Mix)This was the British duo's biggest hit in 1996. It was released on their first album which actually was only released in Japan and South Korea. Selected songs were remixed and reworked and new songs were recorded for their 2nd album titled Crush. The most popular version of this was the Motiv8’s Pumphouse 7” Mix which was even in the video. Their followups “Luv’d Up” and “Love’s Hold” were minor hits. The latter was produced by Pete Hammond (of Stock Aitken Waterman fame). That only did well in the markets where Freestyle was popular after it was remixed by Cibola. They broke up a short time after that. I was really close to putting this top ten. Really close. Nostalgia reared its head big time on this one for me.

#17 KWS - Please Don't GoThis song is a cover of a song released by KC & The Sunshine Band in 1979. This remake has an interesting history. Italian Eurodance act Double You had originally done their cover of this in early 1992 that was produced by Roberto Zanetti (who went on to produce countless other Eurodance songs). After the label Network Records was unable to get proper distribution rights in the UK to release the Double You remake, they got British group KWS to re-record it. Their re-recording was a note-for-note remake of the Double You version. The label ended up having to pay Roberto Zanetti damages for copying the production without getting proper permission. KWS’ version peaked at #6 on the Hot 100. And here's the song that just edged out "Crush" for top ten! The Double You version of "Please Don't Go" would have been a top five contender for me. Love that version. This one's good, too, but not nearly as strong.

Yes! The only appropriate song to place at #20 is "Cotton Eye Joe".
You all messed up on "I Luv U Baby" though, that is and always will be a jam and a half! Sad to see "Jellyhead" out already too. That was always a fun one. Plus how can you ignore that piano solo after the bridge!?
I could never stand "Please Don't Go" - I hate the way it just drones on and the beat is blah. "Close To You" is a favorite and I almost put in my top 10.

Looks like Rednex had a high burn out rate for most. It resurfaces at messy weddings every now and then.
Please Don't Go: I forgot about the KWS and Double You story!

On the subject of Rednex, Jimmy Fallon sang "Cotton Eye Joe" in a Soft Rock arrangement as part of the segment in which him and his guest do songs from one genre in another. Miley Cyrus was there and did "Bodak Yellow."

20. Cotton Eye Joe -- another good example of guilty pleasure for me... the country dance version sounded too good to let it go and I became a fan back in the mid-90s. It had some good rotation in a popular radio station in Peru -which primarily focused on what they called "techno" music in the early-mid 1990s. 19. I Luv U Baby -- first time hearing this. I liked the beat, but not the way the guy started singing the chorus 18. Jellyhead -- also heard this for the first time. That's the closest to what I consider as "techno" in this countdown. And just like several of them it's just trash to me lol

16. Close To You-- I hate the rap but love the chorus had a hard time back in the 1990s when I was doing my mixtapes of dance music. Ended up deleting it because the rap irritated me too much despite my liking the chorus. I was in a more tolerant, nostalgic mood for this RD though :) 17. I liked a bunch of Double You's other songs. 100% AGREE!! I LOVED Double You's version, which was the first one I heard it --but it quickly faded out and this one became a hit back home. It did work as a cover though. Yes, the number of times Please Don't Go can be annoying (I do remember Shadoe Stevens mentioning the exact number of times that phrase was sung in several of the AT40 shows), but it's good enough IMO. In terms of Double You, however, I LOVE LOVE LOVE "Run To Me", a personal chart-topper!

#15 Captain Hollywood Project - More & MoreThis was the debut single for the German Eurodance act. It was released in 1992 and was one of the first few “he raps, she sings” songs to have widespread success. Before CPH, rapper Tony Dawson-Harrison (Captain Hollywood) was a part of act Twenty 4 Seven. They had several minor hits. This was CPH’s only major hit, peaking at #17 on the Hot 100. Subsequent singles all performed worse than the ones that preceded them. CPH continues to tour and perform. Fun fact: this song was used in the SNL ‘The Roxbury Guys’ skits with Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan before Haddaway’s “What Is Love” permanently replaced it. #14 Livin' Joy - DreamerThis was the debut single from the Italian act. The original vocalist for the group was singer-songwriter Janice Robinson. This was the only song that she would do with them. Tameka Starr would do vocals for the rest of their songs. The single was originally released in 1994. It went on to be a huge international success, becoming a #1 in the UK. The other members of the group were the producers behind other Eurodance act Alex Party. Because they were releasing so much material under both names, their releases began to suffer in terms of chart success. This only peaked at #72 on the Hot 100. Janice re-recorded the song in 2005 and it was a club hit again. Janice has continued to write and record. She now Dance music that has a positive message and uplifting lyrics. #13 Rozalla - Everybody's Free (To Feel Good)This was the Zimbabwean artist’s biggest hit. It was originally released in 1991 in some parts of the world. It didn’t get released in the U.S. until 1992. It was a big club hit. Rozalla went on to have several more club hits including "Are You Ready To Fly" and "I Love Music" but this was her signature song and biggest hit. She even was an opening act for Michael Jackson on his doomed Dangerous Tour. It has been remixed and remade countless times. Despite the proper acapella having never been released, many took the almost acapella intro from one of the remixes and used that as the basis for their mixes. In late 1999, a bootleg mashup of this over the Club Dub of Alice Deejay's "Better Off Alone" became really popular in the clubs. Eventually a re-played version of it got released in 2005. Richard Vission's 2000 remake of it was based on that but had a totally different production. It peaked at #37 on the Hot 100. No complaints about these last three reveals. Fine songs, but the competition here was really strong.
Also was not aware of that "More & More" SNL fact...though I thought I remembered hearing it somewhere, so that might explain things.

Back when Britney's "Gimme More" was a single, Israeli remixer Offer Nissim did his own mashup mix which used "More & More" as the basis for it.

What on earth are you guys doing??? “Dreamer” at #14? Please clean out your ears and come back only then. And that #20 ranking…uh uh.
Pretty much all of the above applies to “Your Loving Arms” too. I can’t.
This last batch of songs is so amazing. And truly the competition was tough given the list provided. All of these remind me of the best Dance station that has yet to grace the FM airwaves: Groove Radio 103.1 in LA. Back in the mid 90’s there was no other station that was pumping out all these dance tracks and all the underground and overseas stuff like it. It was short-lived but man was it great. And no station has done Dance radio like that station did in the first golden age of dance – not even the NYC stations. I still have tapes that my brother had recorded for me with just hours and hours of the station and it sounds so good. I used to listen to its predecessor, Mars 103.1, as well but Groove Radio really combined all dance genres onto one station very well. 103.1 took on a dance format in the early 2000’s again – a totally different incarnation as KDL and Disco’s next rankdown will surely take me back to those days but even that station didn’t compete with Groove.
