What do you think was the worst song to hit #1 since Hot 100 launched in 1958? Of course the definition of "the worst" is subjective, it can be either a bad novelty/product of its time, a song that influenced bad trends in music industry, or anything you really dislike.

Laffy Taffy or Souja Boy, I feel like there is another but I probably forgot about it.

Laffy Taffy by D4L, no doubt. Sexy and I Know It would come second, that song was attrocious. Party Rock Anthem is a masterpiece compared to that horrible follow up from LMFAO.

When this question was asked as a thread a few months ago, the answers seemed to lean more toward the last 15 years then too. I wonder how many of us have listened to every number one and can legitimately answer this?

I have listened to every #1 and will give two answers, more aligning with chart policies than with the song itself (one is within the last 15 years)
#1. I will go with every song that hit #1 during the last 3 months of 1974. Lots of great songs there but, how many really belonged at #1. It is no coincidence that 7 of the 10 biggest drops from #1 in chart history all occurred here.
#2. Harlem Shake - not for the song itself but for Billboard using this opportunity to kick off the streaming-era and not some other week.

I just looked at the list of those #1s from the last quarter of 1974 (when I was approaching five). That was a rough patch there.

Worst #1 of 2000s: Laffy Taffy (NO CONTEST)
Worst #1 of 2010s (so far): Probably Sexy and I Know It or Imma Be... but I also hate Love Yourself so much...(sorry lol)

I wonder how many of us have listened to every number one and can legitimately answer this? yes, I've heard every #1 hit since the Hit 100 formed in 1958, and I've even listened to every year end list since 1951, and I still came up with this conclusion. I can't speak for everyone else, though.

From the #1s that I have listened to, here are some I think are some of the worst:
Sugar Sugar (You're) Having My Baby (Everything I Do) I Do It for You Laffy Taffy

You guys aren't going far back enough. Disco Ruck went #1? O.o Guess stupid novelty songs going #1 is pretty common now but they didn't have memes to power songs like this...for some reason I guess this is what the radio latched onto

I mean, there was also REALLY good music being released around this time, but there was some really awful stuff being released, some of the worst songs ever created. And the worst part, as you can tell, is that those songs got popular.

Harlem Shake
Laffy Taffy might be up there. Rude by Magic. Some of the Adele ones.
Then there's probably terrible #1s from the 60's and 70's that I just don't know too much about.

I'd pick "Harlem Shake". Sure, there have been some songs, actually a handful of songs, that are worse but I truly dislike it because it was a viral/meme moment which only lasted for like 5 seconds. Most artists struggle to even crack the top 40 and something as trashy as that just debuted at #1.

Most artists struggle to even crack the top 40 and something as trashy as that just debuted at #1. The official audio of Baauer's Harlem Shake actually goes on for 3:17. The 5-second stuff, and a legit gripe about the chart methodology, is that Billboard counted all those short clips of people dancing to a fragment of it or it being in the background of something. IMO streaming should only count when people click onto a full length recording of the original version (even if they don't necessarily listen to all of it.)

I'm sorry, I meant that the "Harlem Shake" trend lasted for a short amount of time. It was "hot" for 2-3 weeks. I just used "5 seconds" because it sounded more fun.
