#1 Bieber featured on Despacito #2 Nelly & Florida Georgia Line In hindsight, your first pick is not that strange. Despacito was inevitably gonna get an English remix to go to #1 on the hot 100. Justin Bieber was who they picked because at that time, he was the most popular pop artist.

Ed Sheeran (acoustic pop/folk sweetheart with rapping skills), Bruno Mars (throwback pop/R&B darling), and Chris Stapleton (beloved country artist) working together on a rock pastiche ("BLOW").
On a similar note, Juice WRLD, Brendon Urie, and Benny Blanco on "Roses".

At the time, Britney Spears feat. The Ying Yang Twins was totally unfathomable.

Run DMC & Aerosmith is probably the most influential "strange" collaboration ever.
The most bizarre one is probably "Accidental Racist" by Brad Paisley & LL Cool J. Not because it's a country/hip hop hybrid, but it's totally bizarre SONG as well.
Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue was unexpected but super cool back in the 90s.
Then there are several pop hits with rappers just hopping on them but it doesn't make them strange.

Wale, Major Lazer, Wizkid, and Dua Lipa. A 2013 rapper collabing with a DJ, an Afrobeat singer, and a British female singer was strange af.

Didn't Major Lazer work with basically everyone?
On their first album, Pon de Floor was co-produced by Afrojack They had HAIM on their second album, way before they were big, also Peaches and Ezra Koenig. Not to mention Shaggy and Laidback Luke. On their third album, they had Ellie Goulding and Wild Belle.

Taylor Swift and T-Pain once came together to make a hip-hop parody of "Love Story" and it was titled "Thug Story."
At the time, Ke$ha and Iggy Pop was a strange mix for "Dirty Love" (and uncredited for "Only Wana Dance with You") but of course that was only her second album immediately following her dance pop debut. It's pretty evident now that she has strong rock and country roots.

Maybe I'm alone on this but I feel that Trevor Daniel and Selena Gomez is a bit strange. It would be less strange tho if Trevor was rapping and not singing with Selena.

It isn’t strange now because they are dating but Blake Shelton & Gwen Stefani would be a strange pairing if someone told you 10 years ago that they would have a song together someday.
