Heatwave - "Boogie Nights"? I thought this one might actually take a little while to guess. Glad to be proven wrong. And, really, I would have been disappointed if some of you guys weren't Googling to figure out some of these hints. It might have been the only way to get this one, for example. For the next song, we're going decidedly less "classic" and hitting on a song that, frankly, hasn't quite stood the test of time in the same way that "How Deep Is Your Love" and the song being revealed after this song have. Interestingly, though, this HAS endured more than I thought it had. I thought this was just a random discovery, but, as it turns out, I HAD listened to this song previously before I fell in love with it, and it wasn't where I expected. I thought I had heard it originally through the film this song shares its name with, but it wasn't that film. It was another film released around the same time about serial killer David Berkowitz, Son of Sam, where I heard this song for the first time. Years later, I rediscovered it and fell in love with it all over again. Good lord, that groove.
Feels so right when you got the feeling Hold it tight get to keep on dealing Dance with the boogie get high 'Cause boogie nights are always the best in town

Song #7 might very well be the most influential song in this entire rankdown, depending on how you feel about a couple of songs still to come. While this song first got popular during the disco era, it would actually play a MUCH bigger role in the growth of electronic dance music thanks to its "ahead of its time" production from the man who would prove to be the godfather of the genre. The sultry vocal performance on this song, performed by music royalty, certainly didn't hurt, either.

Definitely Donna Summer (produced by Giorgio Moroder) - could it be 'Love To Love You Baby'?

I feel love - Donna SummerI will admit, I kind of love the idea of "MacArthur Park" suddenly being "sultry", though. :kii: When I said that this song was influential, I wasn't kidding. It's not just a song that has lived on beyond the disco movement. It's not just a song that has been an inspiration for other artists to follow in its wake. It's a song that helped to create GENRES. Without it, I'm sure that electronic music would have still been a thing. We had the Moog synthesizer before this, and Autobahn was released a couple of years before this song was first released, so it's not like the seeds weren't already planted. But this was the atomic bomb, the song that launched the career of its mastermind producer, Giorgio Moroder, into the stratosphere, and the song that proved to be the sound of the future, while also being decidedly of its time. Simply put, this is the power of "I Feel Love".
Ooh, it's so good, it's so good It's so good, it's so good It's so good Ooh, I'm in love, I'm in love I'm in love, I'm in love I'm in love

Ready for another swerve? TOO LATE, HERE WE GO! With this next chapter, we reach the largest chapter of this rankdown, and a necessarily long chapter, as we FINALLY really delve into my love of the 1980's. We start with an artist that I've always mentioned when I bring up my love of 80's pop, with, arguably, their most popular song. It was also featured in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, which is actually where my love affair with this duo began.

Hall & Oates - Out Of Touch? Rock and Roll Hall of Famers. I'll never get tired of saying that. Book Two, Chapter Three: Keep Feeling Fascination
I am obsessed with the 1980's, and particularly with pop music from that era. The best of 80's rock is probably objectively "better", but some of my greatest enjoyment has come from the popular songs of the period. How did this odd fascination begin? It's actually pretty simple: It all started with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Rockstar's ode to the 1980's. That was probably my favorite game ever for a brief period. I loved that game more than words could possibly express, and I especially loved driving down the streets of Vice City, listening to Flash FM and discovering a bunch of songs that I would find myself coming back to time and time again. The BIG discovery was a popular duo that has since become the poster children of my fascination with the 80's. It's your time to shine, you beautiful mustache!
Broken ice still melts in the sun And times that are broken can often be one again We're soul alone And soul really matters to me

This next song, like song #8, is a Hot 100 #1, this time from 1982. It has gone on to become a staple of popular culture, especially when it comes time to look back at the 80's. It was ALSO featured in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and was recently featured in a popular TV series. The music video for the song, directed by visionary director Steve Barron, is laughably hilarious 35 years later.

Lol I know this song because of a Darren Hayes remix; there's an official version of his 2011 single 'Talk Talk Talk' mashing his vocals up with the 'Out Of Touch' instrumental.

The Human League – Don't You Want Me Not quite, but a good guess all the same. The video for that song isn't laughable nowadays.

HURRY, BOY, IT'S WAITING THERE FOR YOU! Let's stay with Vice City, shall we? I loved Flash FM, but I also loved some of the other radio stations like Wave 103 and V-Rock. I didn't focus on Emotion 98.3 all that often, which is funny looking back, because I love a lot of the songs that were featured on that station nowadays: Kate Bush's "Wow", Cutting Crew's "Died in Your Arms", Night Ranger's "Sister Christian", Squeeze's "Tempted"...but the crowing jewel of Emotion 98.3 has to be this song. It has a laughably bad music video, but the song is not laughably bad. It has transcended time and has become its own part of pop culture, especially since the turn of the millennium. It doesn't hurt that it was also recently featured in the first season of Stranger Things. Surely, you hear the drums echoing in the night, too?
It's gonna take a lot to take me away from you There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do I bless the rains down in Africa Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

This next artist died just last year. While he would prove to have a fruitful solo career, his biggest success occurred with the massive band that he co-founded in the 1970's. This song is notable for being written for a specific episode of one of the biggest and most enduring TV shows of the 1980's. It was also parodied in another popular TV show that started in the 1980's.

The key hint there is "massive band that he co-founded in the 1970's". We're talking "one of the biggest bands of all-time" massive.

I'm looking up 2016 musician deaths. It's not Earth, Wind & Fire is it? Think bigger than that. Think "released the biggest selling album in US history (for a time, anyway)" big. And yes, it's Glenn Frey. But it's not "Smuggler's Blues".

I'm less sure about this one...Glenn Frey - You Belong to the City? Thought the "written for a TV series" clue was the part of that hint that would give it away, honestly. This next song wasn't featured in Vice City, but it might as well have been. Then again, it was a memorable part of A Vice: Miami Vice. A song purposefully written for the hit TV show, I had first been introduced to the song years ago while randomly listening to 80's music playlists...I want to say on Spotify, but it might have pre-dated Spotify. Anyway, it wound up popping back into my life when the singer of the song passed away last year. I found myself listening to it more and more, way more than I did his other big solo hit, "The Heat Is On", and it has since become yet another one of my favorite songs from the 80's. All for a song that was specifically written for a TV show. Well done, Mr. Glenn Frey.
You were born in the city Concrete under your feet It's in your blood, its in your moves You're a man of the street
SONG #10 Glenn Frey - You Belong to the City

I thought about using other songs for this next artist, who currently features in a rankdown accepting submissions right now, but I decided to go with this one. It's one of my favorite songs by this artist, and likely my favorite non-obvious song, which...is actually kind of controversial, but whatever. A cover of this song was featured in James' Shuffle rankdown.
