I guess we can officially chalk this up as "Joyride", Pt. II? I seriously thought "Re-Education" would be among the first of the top 10 to go.

It's not often you'll see me be the third-lowest ranker for a Rise Against song, but this is one of those instances. It couldn't even crack my top 20. In an ACTIVE rankdown. Rise Against songs are normally locks for my top 20 in ALT rankdowns, much less Active ones.
While I'm glad Rise Against won't ever show up in an Active rankdown again, part of me is disappointed because of how much better their older stuff is, and they had a better shot of performing well with the Active crowd. Every single Rise Against single released before "Re-Education" is better than every single Rise Against single released after "Re-Education"... with one notable exception. But we'll find out about that one soon enough. Some may already song this song I'm referring to, the worst pre-2008 Rise Against single.

Red - you are the undisputed king of rankdown hosts!...you build suspense & engage your audience so well...your rankdowns are always so fun to participate in (or watch in my case here)...i may not like many of these songs, but i can't help but to follow along meanwhile, i will be continuing my DD rankdown reveals later this evening...i can't hope to be as great a host as Red, but i will do my best...in case any of you want to drop in and take a look

I mean, Rise Against is going to show up in an Active rankdown again...just not a retro Active rankdown.
Well, that was much less stressful in terms of hosting than the Alt rankdown was. I had a lot of fun hosting the '09 Alt rankdown, don't get me wrong, but with the constant mistakes that I was making, I couldn't really get to enjoy myself. With this rankdown, I made minimal mistakes, and, as a result of not being stressed out, worried about making a rankdown-ruining mistake, I had more fun hosting this rankdown.
As always, I'd like to thank everyone who followed along, submitted a ranking, posted in this thread...hell, I'll even thank those of you who didn't even do anything other than look at this thread once or twice. Why not? As I've already alluded to, you'll be seeing me host one of these rock chart rankdowns again, though probably not a retro rankdown any time soon. No, I'll see you guys when it comes time to look back at this particular year. Daryl may have the big rankdown, but I've got the better rankdown...in terms of song quality, anyway. See you guys in the 2017 Active rankdown.
And with that...BATTER UP, GREEN AARON--er, Green Baron!

Wow. Did not see that coming. Kudos to Slipknot for making top 5. Wish Alice In Chains could've made it to the top 5 though.

10. The Fixer - Pearl Jam This for me is their best song. Still made the top 20 on y list, because it's a great song. #10. is a deserving slot for it.
9. Sex on Fire - Kings of Leon Great song and their best yet. I ranked it considerably lower on this Active Rock list because it didn't hold up to the harder rock here, but still a great song.
8. Check My Brain - Alice in Chains This is one of their most melodic. At least for it is. A great one too. Just barely missed my top 50, but my top 50 all had Top 20 action on my personal charts. Those 10 songs right below the top 50 were the hardest to rank. Great showing.
7. All Nightmare Long - Metallica This is what I call "balls out fierce". If you don't like hard crunching guitars? Run, because this one doesn't take any prisoners. The Music video is also a masterpiece. I sthis the first time we get them in Top 10? Can't wait for "One" to appear.
6. Jars - Chevelle Very nice. One of their best. Just barely missed mt top 50. THis year was so competitive.
5. Dead Memories - Slipknot It's funny you guys rank this song so much higher here, because of the so called "weak competiition". What a bunch of bull. That means most of you are not as die hard fan as me? I kept it nice and high here, and it paid off big time. This is Alternative Metal at its most epic.
4. You're Gonna Go Far, Kid - The Offspring What a great song. It's fierce enough to rank high on Active. No doubt about that. I only placed it a few slots lower on this Active rankdown. This should have been top 5 on the last Alt rankdown we did too.
***3. Second Chance - Shinedown It's feels proper to be one of the last two memebers, with my #1 song still remaining, because I really love practically every song on this list. This Active year had to be good to me.. I have also put Shinedown's song continuously in my top 10 for the last few rankdowns. This had to pay off. I'm so happy now that I don't even need a Hinder extra to make my night.
2. New Divide - Linkin Park So happy this is the highest we have seen Linkin Park in one of these rankdowns. One of their best songs ever.
1. Re-Education (Through Labor) - Rise Against This is a cool song. I tried to put it a little lower on this rankdown. but I still couldn't keep it out of the top 50.

Yeah, I agree this rankdowns are loads of fun. Red kicks some serious ass when he does these. Seeing these songs all together, also reminds me how much I loved hard rock back then. I have to say that the extras are sometimes even better than some of these songs. never stop adding those. I can't wait for 2008 ACtive games to start. Another of my favorite rock years.

I'm late but WOW RE(TL) is a left field winner and I can't say I'm too happy about it winning either. I guess at least it's an underdog so that's kinda cool?

>Jars one of Chevelle's best >Didn't crack Drindie's top Wow, f**k off, they're the best Active staple there is. have you forgotten I gave top 10 action to "Shameful Metaphors". That was a first time listen for me, but it hit me hard. Even to the point where I'm charting it as we speak. I think I even ranked it higher than you? LIke I said ,this year had a tremendouz amount of melodic talent on it. It's been one of the hardest for me to rank. I don'y know if you consider your #53 song great. I consider songs in my 60's to be great. Just that some sound better to me, than others.

Oh damn so your #93 was actually You're Gonna Go Far Kid, well I love it too but I prefer RE(TL) over it. Pleasantly surprised Rise Against won this, it's not close to their best but it's still a great song. As always you did a great job at hosting Red!

I feel like we always reveal the top 10 on a Friday night, and I end up missing the reveal because of that lol
Anyways, wish I would have bumped my ranking of "All Nightmare Long" up more because it was a nice surprise song to see do so well. I wish "New Divide" would have won, but I can't ever hate at Rise Against winning one of these. They just consistently make great quality music. Thanks for hosting Red, looking forward to 2008!

I do wonder if I could have helped get "Second Chance" to #2, if not #1. As far as I'm concerned, it was the biggest rock song of 2009 for a reason. I have a very special place for it, not only because it's such a great song, but because I predicted its success well in advance. Back in the 2000s, I was one of those people who actively sought out brand-new songs to listen to, so I could say that I'd heard of them first if they became big hits. I even kept big lists, year by year, with all the new music I'd heard sorted by the dates on which I heard them. The first time I successfully called a rock-to-pop crossover was when I introduced some friends of mine who listened mostly to pop, hip-hop and R&B to "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" by Green Day on November 27, 2004. They seemed to enjoy it on their first listen. By that time, "Basket Case," "When I Come Around," "Brain Stew/Jaded" and "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" were the only Green Day songs that crossed over to CHR, and it'd been six years since their last CHR hit, but by spring 2005, "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" became Green Day's biggest hit by far, even spending several weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Enter Shinedown. They were a band that was ever-present on rock radio for about five years already, and they were very well-liked even by people who didn't listen to rock music much. Alas, they still didn't have a song cross over to CHR, except for "I Dare You" getting a few spins. May 5, 2008 was when I heard "Devour" for the first time, and that song kicked ass all the way to #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart by the end of that summer, but it was on September 20, 2008 that I first heard "Second Chance." When I heard it, I played it for my pop-/hip-hop-/R&B-loving friends, and they enjoyed it. They'd heard a couple of songs by Shinedown before, and they liked them, but I told them all that if Shinedown was going to have any song cross over to CHR, it'd be "Second Chance." By the end of 2008, the song reached #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, and its slow boil began on the Hot 100. I felt vindicated when it first entered the Top 40 in spring 2009, but I was beside myself with amazement when it became a Top 10 hit in summer 2009. When I saw "Second Chance" reach #7, I called my friends and reminded them who introduced them to the song in the first place.
Sadly, "Second Chance" remains the last Active Rock hit to become a Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, and if that's not going to happen for the remainder of this decade, then I hope it happens in the 2020s. I don't like the way mainstream hard rock and metal have been ignored for all but the very beginning of this decade.

Red, I'm not sure if you are happy or not that craziaskowboi didn't send a list, because he would have usurped your glory on your #93... but he would have drove it to a lower position

I have a love/hate relationship with Theory Of A Deadman. Most of their songs are either awesome or terrible.
With that said, some of the radio editing of "Hate My Life" is hilarious. I especially enjoy the second verse, when some radio stations have the lyrics mixed to say, "I don't get paid nearly enough / to put up with all of excuse..." That's like the lyrics in the second verse of "Get The Party Started" by P!nk getting mixed to say, "I'll be burning rubber / you'll be kissin' my enz..."
What the FOCK?

Damn, with me and craziaskowboi, we could have boosted Nickelback into the Top 40 with "Burn it to the Ground" (and maybe "Something In Your Mouth" out of the bottom 20).
