Yeah if it’s already number two with that ACR rule in place then there’s no way it WONT be number 1 this year

Yeah if it’s already number two with that ACR rule in place then there’s no way it WONT be number 1 this year I can only hope. My fear is there is some other big song coming out that will block it. I know getting that Christmas #1 is a big deal.

I guess they were more holiday songs (18) in the top 40 than they actually played in the BBC Radio show:
04 December 2020 By Helen Ainsley
Plus there's an avalanche of festive entries into this week's Top 40.
Ariana Grande has held her own on the Official Singles Chart, landing a sixth consecutive week at the top with Positions following a strong challenge for Number 1 from Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You.
Positions now matches Ariana’s previous best Number 1 stint with Thank U, Next which earned six consecutive weeks at the top between November-December 2018.
This means that Mariah Carey’s festive staple finishes at Number 2, zooming up twelve places on last week. With a further three weeks to go until Christmas, there’s still plenty of opportunity for the song to reach the top of the UK Official Chart for the first time.
Meanwhile, Last Christmas by Wham also sees a huge uplift this week, flying 17 places to Number 3. Miley Cyrus returns to the Top 5 with Midnight Sky, climbing two spots to 5 following the release of her latest album Plastic Hearts, and The Pogues ft. Kirsty MacColl’s Fairytale of New York zooms 18 places to Number 8.
Ariana Grande’s 34+35 returns to the Top 10, rebounding three up to Number 10, while rising rapper CJ edges closer to earning his first Top 10 hit with Whoopty at 11. Further down, Dynamite by BTS leaps back up seven places to Number 30.
Liam Gallagher claims the highest new entry on this week’s chart with his brand-new single All You’re Dreaming Of at Number 35 - Liam’s fourth solo Top 40 single. Proceeds of the track are going to the charity Action For Children, who protect and support vulnerable children and young people across the country.
As well as Mariah Carey, Wham! and The Pogues, a further 18 Christmas favourites land inside this week’s Top 40 - just four days into December. They are:
Michael Buble - It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas (13), Shakin Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone (14), Band Aid – Do They Know It’s Christmas (15), Ariana Grande – Santa Tell Me (16), Elton John – Step Into Christmas (18), Brenda Lee – Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree (19), Kelly Clarkson – Underneath The Tree (20), Justin Bieber – Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree (21), Chris Rea – Driving Home For Christmas (22), Wizzard – I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday (23), Jess Glynne – This Christmas (28), Slade – Merry Xmas Everybody (32), Leona Lewis – One More Sleep (33), Andy Williams – It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year (36), Michael Buble – Holly Jolly Christmas (37), Bobby Helms – Jingle Bell Rock (38), Paul McCartney – Wonderful Christmastime (39), and John Lennon - Happy Xmas (War Is Over) (40).

What is the album rule in the UK? I'm surprised Mariah's holiday album isn't top 100 considering how huge "AIWFCIY" is there.

The 2 album tracks attracting most streams are neutralised to the level of the average of the next 10 highest streamed tracks associated with the album (or all tracks where album has < 12 tracks).
Basically the reason why GHs do so well. 10 evergreen hits on the album > 2-3 hits.

Meaning the song of the album.. Don't Start Now and Physical are among the album tracks for Dua Lipa but if they are the two most streamed, their streams are neutralised.

^While it is debatable whether the rule is fair, at least albums can't ride the popularity in streaming of their current hits as they do for the Billboard 200.

Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You is leading the charge on today’s Official Chart: First Look.
The festive hit is currently just 1,300 chart sales ahead of Wham’s Last Christmas which rises one place to Number 2 after 48 hours. If Mariah can hold on to her current position it'll be the first time the song's 26-year history that it scoops the Official UK Number 1.
Meanwhile, Jess Glynne’s Amazon Originals cover of Donny Hathaway’s This Christmas flies up 25 places to Number 3 on the First Look - and if it stays on track, this will be Jess’s 13th UK Top 10 song.
Another Amazon Original, Justin Bieber’s take on Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree is up 16 places to Number 5, set to become his 23rd Top 10 hit.
The influx of festive songs into the Top 10 this week means current Number 1 Ariana Grande’s Positions drops to Number 7 – but with five days of this week’s chart race left there’s still time for the song to rise back to the top.
Other songs rising into the Top 20 on this week’s First Look are: Merry Christmas Everyone – Shakin’ Stevens (14), Step Into Christmas – Elton John (8), Do They Know It’s Christmas – Band Aid (9), I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday – Wizzard (12), Driving Home For Christmas – Chris Rea (13), Merry Xmas Everybody – Slade (17), and One More Sleep – Leona Lewis (18).
The final Official Chart Top 40 will be unveiled exclusively on BBC Radio 1’s Official Chart with Scott Mills this Friday from 4pm, with the full Official Singles Chart Top 100 published from 5.45pm.

What's the deal with the Amazon exclusives?
Anyway all of the songs below "AIWFCIY" being holiday songs is encouraging to me in thinking "AIWFCIY" can finally nab #1. Holiday songs tend to dip during the week, but the closest songs being holiday songs mean they should all dip and "AIWFCIY" stays on top.

I really need AIWFICY to hit #1 this year. I used to live in the UK, and that song is EVERYWHERE, even mores than in the US. It's just completely inescapable this time of year.

What's the deal with the Amazon exclusives? All songs older than 3 years are on permanent ACR, so basically every Christmas song is at a disadvantage, aside from recently released ones, which the Amazon exclusives are. This is how River went #1 last year, when it would've been #11 without the ACR rules. Furthermore, Amazon has an incentive to put their exclusives onto their Christmas playlists. So passive streaming could lead to Justin or Jess could being #1 on the 12/25 chart.

I assume it means they are only available on the one platform (i.e. "exclusive"). How do they get so many streams to top the chart?

Out of curiosity, do y’all have a YE projection for the British charts?

So Blinding Lights is projected as the biggest song of the year in the UK too? Hell yeah! Also, nicely done with Don’t Start Now also being the 4th biggest song of the year with a peak of #2

Out of curiosity, do y’all have a YE projection for the British charts? It's too difficult to estimate due to the convoluted rules, since ACR and the 3-track rule don't apply to the year-end charts.

It would also be nice for "Last Christmas" to finally hit number one in the UK. Of course, then it would lose its title as the biggest selling song in the UK ever not to reach the top! Maybe AIWFCIY and LC can each sneak in at least a week. Heck, give "Fairytale of New York" (another UK Christmas standard that peaked at number two) one too!

Jess Glynne and Justin Bieber pulling a River with these Amazon exclusives Lol right? I’m a huge Ellie fan but River hitting #1 is one of the most egregious examples of chart manipulation in recent memory, if not the most. Definitely worse than Life Goes On. Franchise & Trollz, and that’s saying something.

Shawn Mendes not making the top 5 albums this week is shocking to me! I know he’s not THAT big in the UK, but losing out to Yungblood and week 2 Gary Barlow?? Yikes
EDIT: #12?! Couldn’t even beat Miley & Little Mix. This is very bad for Shawn. Wonder how he’s gonna pivot from this

Mariah Carey’s wish comes true as her iconic festive hit All I Want For Christmas Is You finally reaches Number 1 on the Official UK Singles Chart 26 years after its release, and breaks a new Official Chart record in the process, the Official Charts Company can confirm.
The track climbs one place this week, completing a 26-year journey to the top spot. Upon its original release in 1994, All I Want For Christmas Is You peaked at Number 2, just missing out on the coveted Christmas Number 1 that year to East 17’s Stay Another Day.
An enduring staple of the festive season, All I Want For Christmas Is You proves good things come to those who wait, as it reaches the summit in its 70th week in the Top 40, and sets a new chart record - no other song has spent more weeks in the Official Chart Top 40 before eventually reaching Number 1 in UK chart history.
The song notched up 10.8 million streams over the last seven days – the most streams in a week by any song in 2020 so far. Across its lifetime, the song has also racked up a cool 1.24 million pure sales, making it the UK’s 84th best-selling song in history, according to Official Charts Company data.
Since the advent of digital, Mariah’s Christmas classic has returned to the Official Singles Chart every December since 2007. Proving its ever-enduring popularity, the last three years have seen it match its original Number 2 peak position, but 2020 is the year that the British public have finally sent it all the way to the top, following a tussle with fellow festive anthem Last Christmas by Wham!.
Celebrating the news, Carey told OfficialCharts.com: "Happy Christmas UK!! We finally made it!!! We are keeping the Christmas spirit alive together despite how dismal the year’s been. Love you always! ♥️ Joy to the world 🌎😇🎄!!!!”
Host of BBC Radio 1’s The Official Chart, Scott Mills, added: “Truly one of the greatest songs never to be Number 1 has finally reached the top spot and on the 11th of December! Hopefully it can hold on until Christmas Day!”
AIWFCIY led the annual resurgence of Christmas songs to the Official Singles Chart earlier than ever this year, re-entering the Top 100 on November 13 - plus its earliest ever Top 40 reappearance on 20 November - as the British public wishes away a difficult year in favour of getting into the spirit earlier than usual.
Martin Talbot, chief executive, Official Charts Company said that the song's chart-topping success has been "a long time in the making," adding that it is "fantastically apt for 2020 to be the year in which the British public finally take Mariah’s timeless festive classic all the way to the top of the Official Chart. What a fabulous, feel-good way to round off a challenging year for so many of us.”
Carey leads a thoroughly festive Top 40 this week, which includes a further 22 Christmas songs, six of which feature in the Top 10: Wham’s Last Christmas (2), The Pogues feat. Kirsty Maccoll’s Fairytale Of New York (4), Shakin’ Stevens’ Merry Christmas Everyone (6), Michael Bublé’s It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas (7), Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas (8), and Elton John’s Step Into Christmas (10).
Jess Glynne’s festive cover of This Christmas, released this year, zooms 25 places to Number 13.
Elsewhere, three Christmas songs reach new all-time peaks this week: Ariana Grande’s Santa Tell Me (11), Kelly Clarkson’s Underneath The Tree (16), Michael Bublé’s Holly Jolly Christmas (30).
Finally, rising Australian rapper/singer The Kid Laroi lands his first UK Top 40 hit, Without You vaults 53 places to Number 23.
