Bye Bye Pop Music in the Top 10... Pop music still exists. If people want to see pop music do better on the charts, they need to stream it. It's pretty simple.

More Rules should be at #5 in Radio Songs next week and Finesse could be in the top 10 if it keeps it pace of audience growth.

Finesse and Havana are POP by all definitions and they are #2 and #9 on Spotify. Also All the Stars is VERY pop despite being a song by Kendrick and SZA.
And Ed Sheeran is pretty much a pop artist and spent over month at #1 on Hot 100 so..

And Ed Sheeran is pretty much a pop artist and spent over month at #1 on Hot 100 so.. They are heavily influenced by other genres, though, specifically the ones that do well on streaming. A true 100% pop song tends to not fare well on streaming these days. Here's the thing: if your song can easily cross over to rhythmic and/or urban, then it's much more likely to do well on streaming.

If that horrible JT single keeps New Rules from the top 10... Time for Thunder and TGAG to vacate the region as well. (Cue the 23 posts complaining about people rooting for New Rules when it's "just another pop song" like Havana). The pulse croud loves pop songs. Much more likely they’d rag on “just another meaningless trap song”

Ed with Beyonce, Camila or JT could perform. JT is under contract for no appearances previous to the super bowl. So he will not be.

But I also remember Urban albums having huge sales, which seem to have basically collapsed. 2017 Billboard 200 YE: 1. DAMN. 2. 24K Magic 3. Starboy 5. More Life 7. Stoney 8. Culture 9. Hamilton 10. 4 Your Eyez Only 8 of the 10 top albums of 2017 were Urban.

Kendrick’s album is the only one that actually sold physical copies. (I count Bruno as pop) Well, SPS are more relevant than actual sales as even billboard uses them to create the YE 200. Bruno is borderline. He counts as both.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/8094143/bruno-mars-cardi-b-finesse-justin-timberlake-filthy-hot-100-projectionBruno Mars & Cardi B's 'Finesse' Headed for Hot 100's Top Five, Justin Timberlake's 'Filthy' Aiming for Top 15 Debut1/12/2018 by Gary Trust Cardi B could chart four concurrent Hot 100 top 10s, a first for a female artist. Bruno Mars and Cardi B's "Finesse" appears headed for the top five on next week's Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated Jan. 20). Plus, Justin Timberlake's new single "Filthy" should debut in the Hot 100's top 15, and possibly in the top 10. Above both songs, the Hot 100's current leader, Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé's "Perfect," which logs a fifth frame at No. 1 on this week's chart (dated Jan. 13), looks likely to remain on top. Let's run some projections. Highlights of next week's Hot 100, which blends streaming, airplay and sales data, according to Nielsen Music, will post on Billboard.com Tuesday (Jan. 16), with all charts posting the following day (Jan. 17; a day later than usual, given the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday Monday). As previously reported, "Finesse" launches as the Hot 100's highest new entry on the Jan. 13-dated Hot 100, at No. 35, on the strength of one day of streaming and sales tracking (and three days of airplay), after its remix with Cardi B was released Jan. 4; the song was first released as a solo song by Mars on his 2016 album, 24K Magic. Based on preliminary data projecting the tracking period feeding next week's Hot 100, "Finesse" could draw over 30 million U.S. streams and 40 million in radio audience, and sell more than 75,000 downloads. Such sums should send the song soaring from No. 35 to the top five. Timberlake's "Filthy," released Jan. 5 -- thus setting up a first full week of streaming and sales tracking for the Jan. 20-dated Hot 100 -- could launch with over 10 million U.S. streams, 30 million in airplay audience and 70,000 sold. Based on those projections, the song should launch on the Hot 100 in the top 15, perhaps in the top 10. Meanwhile, Sheeran and Beyoncé's "Perfect" should retain its No. 1 Hot 100 rank, with over 30 million streams, 140 million in radio listenership and 80,000 sold. With all numbers finalized, Mars should land his 15th Hot 100 top 10, and the third from 24K Magic, following the No. 4-peaking title cut and the No. 1 "That's What I Like." Cardi B would notch her fourth Hot 100 top 10 and, if her three hits currently in the top 10 can all manage another week in the region (joining "Finesse"), she'd become the first female artist ever to chart four simultaneous Hot 100 top 10s. On the Jan. 13-dated Hot 100, she ranks at No. 5 as featured (with A$AP Rocky) on G-Eazy's "No Limit"; at No. 8 with Migos and Nicki Minaj on "MotorSport"; and at No. 10 with her own former No. 1 "Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)." Among all acts, only The Beatles, 50 Cent and T-Pain have earned at least four concurrent Hot 100 top 10s, with The Beatles charting a record five for two weeks, including the entire top five on April 4, 1964. Timberlake will tally his first Hot 100 hit since "Can't Stop the Feeling!," which vaulted in at No. 1 on May 28, 2016, becoming his fifth solo No. 1. (He also led as a member of *NSYNC on the boy band's 2000 No. 1 "Bye Bye Bye.") Check back Tuesday, Jan. 16, to find out where "Perfect," "Finesse" and "Filthy" place, and for highlights of the Hot 100's top 10 and more.

^ That mistake I could understand, as both hits were released very close together in time, were from the same album, and BBB was clearly the more memorable song, so it might seem like that would've been #1 instead, but they should have a more rigorous editorial process to correct an obvious mistake like that.

The point was that the people that purchased urban albums switched to streaming them. He wasn't digging on urban's album sales. And I was making a point about how it doesn't change anything. What? Dude, I don't think you understood what conversation was even happening. People were discussing how the demographics of streaming had changed and pointed to how urban music went from being a huge album seller demographic to a huge streaming demographic. Then you got really defensive for some reason. No one was ever downplaying SPS album sales. The discussion was literally: -Hey, urban music has really grown tremendously in streaming over the past few years. -Yeah, and there's a correlation in the time that began happening and when urban music started to trickle off in physical album sales. Then you got defensive saying urban music dominated album sales citing SPS when no one was ever discussing SPS sales. No one was even criticizing urban album sales at all. Just that they don't sell much physically anymore, and that's why they stream so well. The urban crowd switched from buying physical CDs to streaming the tracks online. No one claimed it was a problem. No one criticized urban music at all. It was an observation. Then you got defensive for no damn reason. Your defending against an argument that literally never existed.

Could someone please tell me what SPS stands for, just out of curiosity? I googled it to no avail. Sales plus streaming. It's the shorthand for the number of album sale equivalent units. The Billboard 200 album chart is comprised of physical and digital album sales plus streams. I believe it's 15000 streams equals 1 sale or something like that.
|
|
|
Post by Baby Yoda Hot100Fan on Jan 12, 2018 21:17:16 GMT -5
^OK. For albums, the Billboard 200 adds pure album sales, plus streams divided by 1500 (this are called Streaming Equivalent Albums or SEAs) and digital track sales of the songs in the album divided by 10 (this are called Track Equivalent Albums or TEAs) to get the total equivalent albums, referred elsewhere to SPS (no, Billboard doesn't use the term sales plus streams or its acronym). Those album equivalent factors are the same ones that RIAA uses for certification purposes and in the case of the UK's Official Singles, each 150 streams of a song each one equivalent song sale are added to digital track sales of the song to get a song equivalent sales.
