It didn’t “deserve” a #1 position on any other previous week, but it deserved a #1 peak. That’s what they meant. It’s had enough overall success and longevity that made it bigger than most #1 songs, but in the future people would only see that it had a #2 peak, which wouldn’t tell the full story. Now it has a #1 peak and doesn’t have to be included in any “songs you can’t believe missed #1!” compilation. :) Yeah, but that's not how charts work, so people complaining about so and so deserving #1 just sound like whiny broken records. Charts only show a week by week popularity, not an overall popularity. Thriller wasn't a #1 hit either, and it never deserved to be there. What it does deserve is high recognition as one of the biggest hits from the 80s. Peaks really don't mean shit.

This topic is beyond stupid every time it comes around.
All a #1 peak means is that there was a week, where over that rolling period, you had the most chart points out of all the songs for that specific chart. Nothing else.

Okay, so here is my opinion:
A song can deserve a peak, but not a position on a chart in a given week.
A song can deserve a peak, as in it not being a specific week, but rather "the overall performance made it deserve to peak at #1". Not the quality.
What I mean:
"OMG New Rules deserved to be at #1 this week"
vs
"OMG TOL deserved to peak at #1" Both are true: New Rules is a good song and I hope that it'll get a high peak, while Thinking Out Loud was huge and deserved to peak at #1, based on it's performance.
That is my opinion though.

You guys are misunderstanding my point.I just feel that a song that spends multiple weeks at #2 deserves a #1.Havana was #2 for 7 weeks.I feel the same way about One Republic Apologize, Missy Elliot Work it, Foreigner Waiting for a girl like you or even PSY Gangam Style.Sometimes the Hot 100 #1 is not reflective of what the most popular song really is.

Sometimes the Hot 100 #1 is not reflective of what the most popular song really is.I get it, but only over time and in retrospect, and in our own perception. In the moment, however, whatever is #1 *is* technically the most popular for that week by the current set of rules. This is why historical charts that span years and decades don't recognize peaks, only overall points.

Sometimes the Hot 100 #1 is not reflective of what the most popular song really is. Yes it does. For the one week it represents. A peak is a slice of a pie, not the whole damn thing. What aren't people getting about this? The Hot 100 has never been and will never be "this song is extremely popular this month, let's put it at #1." It has and will always be "this song has scored the most points in these past seven days based on our algorithm using several different metrics, so it will be listed at #1 this week." It's a rolling chart using data, not an overall chart using "this is how I feel." It's not an overall chart at all. "Havana" could literally have the most combined number of points of any song on the Hot 100 in history, but if it never had one week where it had the most for that one particular, then it won't be #1 and never "deserved" to be there. People need to stop sucking the dick of a peak. It represents nothing but how a song performed in that arbitrary seven day period. Like there's not even a real reason the chart is posted weekly. It could be posted every 13 days but a song still doesn't deserve to be anywhere unless it has the correct number of points to do so, and it won't mean anything other than "this song was the 56th most popular song in this 13 day period."

Gosh I came here looking for data/numbers/charts for the week. Instead, we people who are unhappy/griping about the #1 song not getting there sooner. Enjoy the #1 and move on. ;)
At least TC and Filthy get huge lifts from the SB. And when are the new metrics going to be reflected? Which fan base will meltdown when their favorite queen gets 'screwed' out of a chart peak with new metrics?

It’s called timing. Some songs have good timing, some don’t.
