Kelly Clarkson Makes Us Laugh and Cry, Janet Jackson Flaunts Her Icon Status at 2018 Billboard Music Awards News By Nolan Feeney | May 20, 2018 10:59 PM EDT
“Tonight you’re just getting me,” Kelly Clarkson warned during her opening monologue at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards. She was trying to set expectations for her first-ever awards show hosting job — the kind of job, she pointed out, that usually goes to actors and comedians. But “just” Clarkson turned out to be more than enough; the original American Idol’s unfiltered commentary and enthusiasm for her peers — not to mention a watercooler-worthy medley of the past year’s biggest hits and, later, a high-energy rendition of “Whole Lotta Woman” — provided some welcome levity in a night that had its fair share of heavy moments.
The first one came from Clarkson herself: In a cold open before the official show kick-off, an already-tearful Clarkson spoke about the recent school shooting in Santa Fe and explained that she was asked to lead Las Vegas' MGM Grand Garden Arena in a moment of silence. “I’m so sick of moments of silence, it’s not working, obviously,” she said. “Why don’t we do a moment of action? Why don’t we do a moment of change? Why don’t we change what’s happening? Because it’s horrible.” Those are tough words to follow, but it’s hard to think of a more fitting segue than Ariana Grande’s spirited performance of her new single, “No Tears Left to Cry” — a triumphant single about picking up the pieces after tragedy, and also her first new track since the deadly attack at her Manchester concert in 2016. Yet that wasn’t the only performance of the night to reference gun violence: Bebe Rexha also got choked up as she introduced a performance from Shawn Mendes and Khalid, who sang their new duet “Youth” with backing from the choir from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., where another mass shooting took place in February.
Some artists used their time in the spotlight to pay tribute to late greats: The Chainsmokers and Halsey remembered Avicii and urged viewers to support those struggling with mental health while presenting an award for Top Hot 100 Song of 2018; the Chainsmokers also dedicated their win for Top Dance/Electronic Artist to Avicii later in the show.
Other artists used their spotlight to make feminist statements: Christina Aguilera and Demi Lovato debuted their new duet, “Fall in Line,” a women’s empowerment anthem that addresses the way society polices young girls, while flanked by dancers dressed up as actual policemen. Taylor Swift used her acceptance speech for Top Female Artist to thank both the female artists who paved the way for her and the inspiring up-and-comers who are just picking up instruments and embarking on their careers — a relevant message for a show whose commercial breaks were peppered with Uber ads featuring Ciara spotlighting the unsung female songwriters and producers working behind-the-scenes.
And then, of course, there was Billboard cover star and Icon Award recipient Janet, who powered through a melody of hits — including “Nasty” and “If” — after a video introduction that touched on the socio-political importance of landmark albums like Control and Rhythm Nation 1814. She then delivered a soft-spoken but impassioned speech that touched on, among other things, the #MeToo and Time's Up movements: “For all our challenges, we live at a glorious moment in history,” Jackson said. “It’s a moment when at long last, women have made it clear that we will no longer be controlled, manipulated, or abused. I stand with those women, and with those men equally outraged by discrimination who support us in heart and mind.”
Jackson was hardly the only legend present: Jennifer Lopez performed her new single “Dinero” with assists from DJ Khaled and a pre-filmed cameo from Cardi B, while Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue closed the show with a nostalgic medley of classics like “Push It” and “Whatta Man.”
But, mostly, the night was a showcase for high-powered collaborations — Macklemore and Kesha reminisced about the “Good Old Days” from a remote stage, while Maren Morris, Zedd, and Grey met in “The Middle” live for the first time — and newer artists, who used their air time to prove they’re only just getting started. BTS seemed to get the loudest reception of the night with a performance of “Fake Love”; Dua Lipa breathed new life into last year’s “New Rules” by dancing all over giant flamingo — the kind of high-production-value performance that cements an artist's star power and whets appetite for future flashy tours. Shawn Mendes, standing in a field of light-up flowers, delivered a stirring performance of his new single “In My Blood,” which was yet another reminder of just how far he’s come from making Vines and opening for Taylor Swift (who sang and danced along from the audience).
Meanwhile, Normani joined Top New Artist winner Khalid for a performance of their Love, Simon soundtrack cut “Love Lies,” drumming up excitement for her upcoming post-Fifth Harmony solo career with a fierce, extended dance break and some of her sultriest live vocals to date. And speaking of life after 5H: Camila Cabello, who made her live debut as a solo artist last year after departing from Fifth Harmony in December of 2016, took her victory lap with a performance of her chart-topping single “Havana” and her new Pharrell Williams duet, “Sangria Wine” — not to mention an award for Billboard Chart Achievement. In a night devoted to saluting superstars, reflecting on pop pioneers, and looking back on a year of hits, there are plenty of icons-in-the-making to get fans excited about the future, too.

Whoever produced this show needs to produce for the Grammys! Every genre was represented. Nice throwbacks and long overdue tributes were recognized. PERFECT.

Who is responsible for the horrible camera shots? They did not do well with all the confetti and then constantly panning into the audience at the most awkward times.

Yeah there were camera shot issues but I was talking about who put together the performance line up.

That would be more the director and cinematographer, though production could be involved too.

Whoever produced this show needs to produce for the Grammys! Every genre was represented. Nice throwbacks and long overdue tributes were recognized. PERFECT. Huh? No hard rock.. No alternative. No country. No Americana. No blues or soul. The only legitimate hip-hop or rap act was a legacy performer, which is particularly crazy since this is a chart show and that's what's dominating the charts right now. This show did some things right, but genre representation was not one of them. It was a mainstream pop show.

TV Ratings: Billboard Awards Steady-ish in NBC Move, 'American Idol' Finale Dips
NewsTV / Film
By Michael O'Connell | May 21, 2018 12:23 PM EDT
The first part of the musical competition's season-ender takes a spill against the awards show.
Sunday night (May 20) went heavy on the music for the broadcast networks, with NBC's telecast of the Billboard Music Awards and the first part of ABC's American Idol finale taking up the top two slots in the key demo.
The Billboard Music Awards, prior to lifts from time-zone adjustments for the coast-to-coast live telecast, led in the demo with a 2.1 rating among adults 18-49 and came in with just shy of 7 million viewers. The comparable stats from the 2017, its last year on ABC, were a 2.3 rating in the key demo and 7.7 million viewers. Billboard's show will perk up when adjustments come in, but the kudos are still facing an all-time low.
NBC's awards, toplined by host and Idol alum Kelly Clarkson, certainly dampened ABC's American Idol finale. The competition was down to a 1.3 rating in the key demo and 7.4 million viewers. Among adults 18-49, that tied a low for the ABC show — clear evidence that younger viewers were torn on Sunday night. It wraps its revived run on Monday night (May 21). Elsewhere on the net, the series finale of Deception came in with a 0.6 rating in the key demo.
Fox aired its last Brooklyn Nine-Nine, averaging a 0.8 rating among adults 18-49, with two episodes of Bob's Burgers (0.7 adults), The Simpsons (0.8) adults) and Family Guy (0.9 adults) also on the schedule. CBS put out new episodes of 60 Minutes (0.8 adults), NCIS: Los Angeles (0.8 adults) and Madam Secretary (0.6 adults).
*Both Billboard and Music Awards producer Dick Clark Productions are sister companies of The Hollywood Reporter.

In addition to being one of the more entertaining award shows in recent memory, one of my favorite things about last night's show is that it motivated me to check out artists I'm not familiar with. I've been bored with a lot of pop music in recent years, and I never really paid attention to Fifth Harmony. But after Normani and Camila killed it with last night's performances and their charm, I actually want to listen to them!

Oh Lort. The fact that she has had 3 songs on the Hot 100 while other female rap artists struggle to even bubble under says A LOT about the streaming generation.

I think Dr. Phil deserves a good spanking for bringing her out into the world. I dug the Salt n Pepa/En Vogue finale. Even with Kelly trying to worm her way in at the end.

Kelly Clarkson Steals the Show at Billboard AwardsEd Sheeran took the Best Artist trophy at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards, but he was hardly the headliner at Sunday’s event in Las Vegas.May 23, 2018 by 30dB According to Social, host Kelly Clarkson made the biggest impact, earning a 77 percent positive score over the past day. In addition to an opening performance in which she covered musicians ranging from Taylor Swift to Kendrick Lamar, Clarkson issued a forceful message against gun violence in light of the most recent school shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas. “I’m so sick of moments of silence,” Clarkson said. “It’s not working, obviously. So why don’t we do a moment of action? Why don’t we do a moment of change?” Janet Jackson was also a big hit at the BBMAs after receiving the Icon Award: She delivered her first TV performance in nine years—and an inspired speech, both of which were enough to garner a 74 percent positive score. The South Korean boy band BTS showed off its new single, “Fake Love,” and did so in front of a deliriously loud crowd of fans. Social loved what it saw, but not quite as much as it loves Clarkson and Jackson. BTS has a 66 percent positive score over the past day. Taylor Swift nabbed Best Female Artist, but she remains a polarizing figure—she has a 58 percent positive score following her rare awards show appearance. –Alex Shultz goodmenproject.com/arts/kelly-clarkson-steals-the-show-at-billboard-awards-wcz/

Since her albums/songs flop now maybe she can me the new LL Cool J and just host award shows? ^youd have a point if her albums were actually flopping. Meaning of life has sold on par with her contemporaries. 200k is a very normal sales number these days and shouldn’t be seen as a flop
