Her Madgest lands at Nos. 20 and 1 on Spin's 35 Best Videos of the Last 35 Years list. Why'd they go with that Who's That Girl photo, though, as the page's main image? :) "Weird" Al's parody of "Like a Virgin" also made the cut. www.spin.com/featured/the-35-best-videos-of-the-last-35-years/20. “Justify My Love” The Queen of Pop once ranked “Justify My Love” the best video from her own sprawling catalog — and while we don’t completely agree (see below), it’s impossible not to consider this erotic slice of voyeurism. Within, director Jean-Baptiste Mondino wanders through the halls and bedrooms of a very accommodating hotel, documenting snippets of sexual encounters heavy on the BDSM. MTV banned the clip, which only gave the singer a publicity boost. Not that she needed it. – R.R. 1. “Like a Prayer” Madonna made high art out of sacrilege with her notorious “Like a Prayer” video, a molotov cocktail of melodrama, racial commentary and religious symbolism. Director Mary Lambert would release a film version of Stephen King’s Pet Sematary a month later — but for both cola brands and conservative Christians, this was the true horror project. The rapidly edited scenes — including stigmata, bleeding eyes and the spiritual laying of hands — smashed taboos with madcap zest. “I wanted to speak about ecstasy and to show the relationship between sexual and religious ecstasy,” Lambert told Rolling Stone. “I think that subconsciously a lot of people understood this and were either enthralled or outraged by it.” Maybe even both. – R.R.

Also, Like a Prayer ranks # 5 on Spin’s top 35 songs of the last 35 years. SPIN magazine The 35 Best Songs of the Last 35 Years They’re the songs that changed the face of music. 5. “Like a Prayer” Madonna (1989) Life is a mystery, but one thing we can always count on is Madonna’s willingness to stand alone — and create controversy. Though they sang on the recording, the Andrae Crouch gospel choir refused to appear in the video, which, due to the depiction of stigmata, burning crosses and Madonna kissing a black man all combined to the American Family Association — and The Vatican — disavowing it. Bless you, Madonna. We humbly crown you Our Lady of Rock. www.spin.com/2020/11/the-35-best-songs-of-the-last-35-years/

"Vogue's been on other videos lists- had it been more than 35 positions, it may have appeared. :)
The Spin songs list has a single-writer byline, though she writes "we" in the intro. The videos list had different writers for each selection.

There’s a rumor floating around that Madonna and Patrick Leonard are writing together again. This seems to resurface every few years but the source is reportedly the same that broke the story early that Mirwais was working on Madame X so we will see.

I just posted this at UkMix...here's hoping it's true!

I think they are working on music for biopic. Maybe they are re-arranging the old hits or preparing to release some old demos for biopic.

I think he released some early demos to those crap “Pre-Madonna” compilations in the late 90s & that caused a rift.

Did not know that caused a rift. Technically, he did not do anything wrong. He owned the rights to "Ain't No Big Deal" in exchange for giving her sole writing credits on a couple of songs on her debut album.

She did compliment/thank Steve Bray in the 2009 Rolling Stone interview when talking about "Into the Groove." I had read somewhere that M and Steve had two tracks where the deal was that she had sole credit on one of them and he had on another. Or maybe I imagined it. ![](http://yoursmiles.org/ssmile/fun/s0244.gif)

They were waffling back and forth as to whether or not it was going to be her first single (instead of Everybody) but that issue was resolved when she traded him ownership of that song and he gave it to another artist.

Someone else recorded "Ain't No Big Deal"? If that's a known fact/common knowledge, my memory is doin' a number on me. ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png)

She must have had a very happy Thanksgiving since all her kids were with her. Even her haters admit that she's a great mother.

If that's a known fact/common knowledge, my memory is doin' a number on me. ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) "Ain't No Big Deal" The released version was produced by Reggie Lucas in 1982 and appeared as the B-side of her "True Blue" single in 1986, though this is an alternate version to the unreleased version. Originally intended to be Madonna's first single. Three more separate unreleased studio versions were also produced each by Mark Kamins, Stephen Bray and John "Jellybean" Benitez. They were all shelved by Sire Records when the song was recorded and released in 1983 by the female disco act Barracuda on 12-inch vinyl Epic Records. Credited as written only by Stephen Bray due to a publisher contract with July 4 Music. It was actually a Madonna co-write so she is understood to have taken sole writing credit for "Everybody" in trade. "Ain't No Big Deal" was included in the US compilation album Revenge of the Killer B's, Vol. 2. This Wiki is a treasure trove of unreleased Madonna music: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_unreleased_songs_recorded_by_Madonna

Speaking of discarded Madonna songs recorded by other artists, a favorite of mine is "Each Time You Break My Heart" by Nick Kamen. This song was originally written by Madonna / Stephen Bray for her "True Blue" album, but it was then cut. She gave the song to model Nick Kamen and she produced the track for him. It became a Top 5 song worldwide and Top 5 on the US Dance Chart. My older brother had the 12" single and I remember loving it. She also sings backup on the song. She also sang backup on another Nick Kamen song, though she didn't write it, called "Tell Me."
Nick Kamen originally became famous for this Levi's commercial (which I recorded and watched often ;):
Nick Kamen version of "Each Time You Break My Heart." Recognize the little boy in the video?

Thanks, MX. "Ain't No Big Deal's" history is one that sorta slipped on by moi, as I hadn't really read up on it. I've always thought M's version was fun and quirky, and would have fit in alright on the debut album.

^ Each Time You Break My Heart arrangement is giving me Causing a Commotion and Into the Groove vibes. Nick Kamen's connection to Madonna is pretty prevalent across his body of work: 1. He recorded "Each Time You Break My Heart" written / produced by Madonna / Stephen Bray. Madonna sings backup. 2. He recorded a song called "Tell Me" featuring backup vocals by Madonna (#1 for 9 weeks in Italy). You might see a Madonna demo floating around the internet / Youtube called "Tell Me." This is not a Madonna demo and is in fact her backup vocals on this song that someone isolated and called it a lost Madonna song. 3. He covered "Right on Track" by the Breakfast Club (Madonna's old band)(produced by Stephen Bray) 4. Felix Howard, the little boy from the Open Your Heart video, also appears in his video for "Each Time..." 5. Patrick Leonard produced his entire second album, "Us" He only had a couple of minor club hits in the States in the 80s, but he was pretty big in the UK and the rest of Europe, particularly Italy. He stopped recording somewhere around 1992. Sadly, after some digging around, I found he has been deathly ill with cancer the past couple of years. I honestly do not know if he is even still alive, which is sad, he is only mid-50s now. ![](https://www.attitude.co.uk/media/images/2020/08/nick_3.jpg.750x400_q85_box-0%2C8%2C2056%2C1104_crop_detail.jpg)

^Thanks for that info. And, yes, that's unfortunate to hear about Kamen. Weren't they rumored to have "a thing"?

This morning my husband in the car told me to play Take A Bow (of which I have never been a HUGE fan), but then we played You’ll See and THAT one I do like very much and made me think of so many great ballads she has that I haven’t listened in a long time. I thought of I’ll Remember too which I never hear on the radio. I’ll do a Spotify playlist of my favorite ballads. From Music all the way to her last album there were always at least 2 slow songs I really liked.

Although they are similar, “You’ll See” is definitely the superior track, the same cannot be said about its videos though. I LOVE her voice during the 95-96 years, such a pretty tone.
