^4M is eligible for 4x Platinum. There's about 31 singles and 4-6 albums that need certifying.
and...
"This Used To Be My Playground" out at midnight
01. This Used To Be My Playground 02. This Used To Be My Playground (Long Version) 03. This Used To Be My Playground (Instrumental)
It's Gold with the RIAA. With SPS, it's eligible for Platinum.

^Indeed. The digital and streaming numbers aren't great, though good enough to push it over 1 million when coupled with the 870,000 or so in physical sales.
"4 Minutes" has surpassed 4 million SPS? I knowit's been eligible for 3m for eons, as the digital sales exceeded as much.

Someone was posting on reddit about the Like a Virgin performance at the VMAs in 1984. I shared a story that I am not sure I ever shared here. We spent the summer of '84 in Italy and Greece visiting our family. We happened to be in Venice when Madonna was filming the LAV video. We saw them filming scenes of her dancing on the gondola by the Bridge of Sighs. I remember it wasn't moving and there was a big platform that filled most of the boat. There camera men on the boat filming her and men on either side holding the boat still with those long black poles. It was hard to hear the song, but we did hear bits and pieces but we didn't recognize it because this was like July '84 and it wasn't coming out for like another 6 months. We recognized her but it wasn't a huge deal, as the only pop hits she had at the time were Holiday and Borderline was the current single. I think my brothers and I were like its the hot girl who sings that borderline song, but that was about it. A few month later we see her on VMAs because we realized she was singing the song we saw her filming and bragged to all our friends that we saw her filming this song in Venice like we were so bougie.

I love this song, but what always cracked me up about this was the complete left turn she did with her followup song, Erotica. Playground was all about lush and dreamy vibes and a perfect summer ballad. Also love that extended bridge and key change in the Long Version. I was very surprised it did not get nominated for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards. It was the perfect kind of song that the academy loves...a sentimental ballad, a hit movie, and a big commercial hit song. It did get nominated for a Golden Globe (lost.) In fact, no song Madonna has written for a film has been nominated for an Academy Award. Though she has a good track record with the Golden Globes on Best Original Song. Her nominated songs for a GG are: 1)Who's That Girl 2)This Used to Be My Playground 3)I'll Remember 4)Beautiful Stranger 5)Die Another Day 6)Masterpiece (Winner) And we all know that two songs she sang, but didn't write, won Academy Awards: 1)Sooner or Later 2)You Must Love Me

Nice story, August- who knew, eh? "Playground" probably was hurt, in terms of an Oscar nod, by the whole Erotica/ Sex one-two punc- and tack Body of Evidence on to that, also. At the Grannys... er, Grammys, "Who's That Girl," "I'll Remember" and "Beautiful Stranger" were nominated i nthe Song Written For a Motion Picture category, with "Stranger" winning.

Ahh, I hadn't noticed the two versions of The Confessions Tour on my Spotify until yesterday, but I do remember those tracks being greyed out for a long time. Probably why I quit checking that particular album for updates.

^Billboard article: www.billboard.com/music/pop/the-weeknd-madonna-playboi-carti-popular-riaa-platinum-ceritfication-1235699679/The Weeknd, Madonna & Playboi Carti’s ‘Popular’ Is Certified PlatinumBy Heran Mamo 06/20/2024 "Popular" marks The Weeknd's 42nd platinum hit, Madonna's seventh and Carti's fourth. The Weeknd, Madonna and Playboi Carti‘s “Popular” just got a whole lot more popular: The song has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. According to the RIAA, platinum certification for a song recognizes 1 million units certified in the U.S. for a song, and one unit equals either one permanent download sold, or 150 on-demand audio and/or video streams. This marks The Weeknd’s 42nd platinum hit, Madonna’s seventh and Carti’s fourth. “Popular” was released a little over one year ago on June 2, 2023 via XO and Republic Records as the second single from the scrapped soundtrack album The Idol, Vol. 1 from The Weeknd’s HBO drama series The Idol. The official “Popular” music video exclusively debuted in February during Fortnite Festival, during The Weeknd’s takeover of the event’s Season 1 The song peaked at No. 43 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 14 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. With “Popular,” Madonna joined the elite company of artists who have earned Hot 100-charting hits in five distinct decades. The song also represents the first Madonna song to be certified platinum since August 18, 2008 with “Hung Up”; her most recently released song to reach platinum status was the Justin Timberlake collab “4 Minutes,” which was released in 2008 and certified platinum in June of that year. Also this week, Madonna’s 1986 “Papa Don’t Preach” single was certified platinum. “We had a different version of this song prior, so I’ve had these vocals for a while and I’ve kind of worked around it and then kind of kept it in the tuck. But now, it was time. And it felt right,” the “Blinding Lights” hitmaker (real name Abel Tesfaye) told Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe in an interview last June. “[Madonna is] the ultimate co-sign for this song, for this album, and for this TV show.” With “Popular” — as well as new diamond certifications for his singles “Save Your Tears” and “Die For You” — Tesfaye becomes the first Canadian artist to notch seven RIAA diamond certifications and the third overall to score that many, joining Rihanna and Drake, with Post Malone alone at the top with nine diamond records. Tesfaye also received platinum certifications for his 2023 The Idol hit “One of the Girls” with BLACKPINK’s Jennie and Lily-Rose Depp; the honor also makes Jennie the first female K-pop solo artist to earn a platinum single from the RIAA and marks Depp’s first platinum certification.

M and Carti are not listed under the "Artist" header, so it doesn't show up under their certified titles. (Same for "Me Against the Music"). However, RIAA is showing 9 million in certified digital singles for M- not sure how it came up with that total. In terms of what's been certified and posted, it's 4.5 million, plus 1.5 million for MATM and "Popular."
Acts' digital tallies includes digital-only certs and titles certified for physical shipments/sales that have been upgraded to include digital/streaming info.

Madonna has 8 Platinum singles:
Papa Don't Preach: Platinum Like A Prayer: Platinum Vogue: 2x Platinum Justify My Love: Platinum Music: Platinum Hung Up: Platinum 4 Minutes: 2x Platinum Popular: Platinum
Total: 8
Billboard has removed this line from the above article:
""Popular" marks The Weeknd's 42nd platinum hit, Madonna's seventh and Carti's fourth."

Interestingly if you do an Advanced Search for Madonna's singles where you select Digital, it includes some songs that haven't been certified since the 1980s. Not sure why/how those are being counted as digital, but that's where the 9 million total is from: "Like A Virgin" - Gold "Crazy For You" - Gold "Like A Prayer" - 1x platinum "Vogue" - 2x platinum "Frozen" - Gold "Hung Up" - 1x platinum "4 Minutes" - 2x platinum "Give Me All Your Luvin" - Gold "Papa Don't Preach" - 1x platinum

Totally stumbled upon this compilation of interviews / news clips on the relationship between Madonna and Michael Jackson. Interestingly enough, Madonna praises Michael's talent and generally speaks kindly about him. However, there are multiple news clips where Michael says some pretty bad things about her. Of course, it all depends who compiled this video and if they were slanted one way or the other.
Either way, it is very interesting.

I have always loved the Christina Aguilera song "Not Myself Tonight" and its a shame it wasn't a bigger hit. I also love the video which is an homage to the Madonna videos for "Express Yourself" and "Human Nature". You can also see a little nod to Gwen Stefani and the George Michael video for "Freedom '90." It is all pretty hot.
She even has one of Madonna's dancers, Paul Kirkland, in the video and he appeared in all promo performances of the song. He was a dancer on both the Re-Invention Tour and the Sticky and Sweet Tour.

^It's not the Angel/ITG 12-inch single.
This is digital single sales since ~2003 + streaming + video views = Sales Plus Streaming.

I cannot imagine that after 40 years and how HUGE that 12" was at the time, that it is not at platinum status by now. Well, wasn't the 12" technically the "Angel" single? I don't think "ITG" ever had its own physical single, so its certification would be based on its digital sales and its streams. :ETA: Ha, what areyoureadytojump said. But yeah, "ITG" is very likely still platinum, but not because of physical sales. Its weird how her team is doing these certs randomly.

Thanks for the observation, jeng, regarding the posted digital sum. Weird. Also frustrating that for singles certified gold or platinum under the old criteria, which have yet to be upgraded, it shows 0.5 or 1.0.
The RIAA has a rule that sales/streaming info for remixes more than 1:30 longer than the original version do not count toward a cert that includes the original version. However, I can't imagine the You Can Dance versions of ITG amount to much i nthe way of sales and streaming.

RIAA.com:
MADONNA Title: VOGUE Certification Date: June 28, 2024 Label: SIRE RECORDS Format: SINGLE 3x Platinum
The math:
2x Platinum RIAA certification + 1,622,000 SPS = 3,622,000 = 3x Platinum
