Counting down 70-61 tomorrow...
Quick question: my plan was to move onto 1988 after this rankdown but now I'm wondering if ya'll think I should just do 1986 first? Then 1987? Then 1988?
1986 was pretty good for music, but that Top 5 is just ...
I agree on the chronological order. When I looked at the '88 list, and then the other three, I think it definitely stood out as the weakest. '86 has an odd top bracket, but most of the rest makes up for it. At the very least, it's as much of an eyebrow raiser as Look Away being the #1 single of '89.

That's funny cause the '88 list to me is so strong and I found it hard to rank. lol. I think at the very least I will start the '86 rankdown soon with a deadline far off in the future and get it going at least...

Oh wow! Next highest is 29? I feel like Saving All My Love For You is more well known, but can't imagine it outlasting this by too much. I hope I'm wrong.

I ranked her other song lower, but I expected this one to go beforehand, although maybe not at this point.

WHAT the...ABC got robbed hereSHAME!!! Counterpoint: You ranked "Method of Modern Love" at 68 and "Nightshift" at 79. This was a very up and down set. A couple of songs have overstayed already...but I have also still yet to lose a top 20.

I would love a 1988 rankdown, but it does make sense doing the years in chronological order Though i wouldn't mind a 1983 rankdown at all

Unhinged I think you missed a number on my Mary Jane Girls ranking, it was my #91 not my #9 Also 'If You Love Somebody Set Them Free' deserved so much better.

Catching up on the reveals just now!! Sorry for the spamming, but 1980s RDs made me urge to comment! lol And especially 1985, the first FULL year I tallied my personal ranking every week!!!!
100. All I Need (98): I didn't know this was the Melrose Place guy! LOL I thought he was just a 1-hit wonder. Good to know :) Don't hate it, just don't care much for it, although it was a personal top 5 back in the day 99. Separate Lives (63): I hadn't heard this one in quite some time. I remembered the chorus and thought it had better verses... but it was actually messier than I thought. I do feel both sound good, but yeah I over-ranked this one. Shouldn't been around #80. Oops! 98. Sentimental Street (94): Never heard of this, and don't care much about it either. 97. Penny Lover (64): This was another personal top 5 back in the day, and I still like it more than SOY and RWTN. Quite an iconic era! 96. California Girls (99): Interesting to know that Beach Boys actually did background vocals for this one. At that time, it was fun. I barely knew about Beach Boys in 1985, and it was all about that super fun video. Now it's lost that pro and just remains sort of a parody... 95. Do What You Do (96): Just too simple and boring. Sorry. Didn't make my chart, whereas Dynamite was a top 5 and When The Rain Begins To Fall a top 15. 94. The Search Is Over (57): >:( This is a good rock ballad, but of course Pulse would tank it... 93. Sea of Love (89): Robert Plant sang this very nicely, but it was so weird to see him do this. Again, I didn't know about RP back in 1985, and it just sounded nice and very much like the songs my mom liked :) personal top 5, but it hasn't aged well. 92. You're the Inspiration (40): >:( The song structure, musicality, melody, voices are all on point for me. It may be sappy and all, but well I have lots of room for that type of music from Chicago, Air Supply and the like. This should've escaped bottom 10 just from musical standpoint. 91. No More Lonely Nights (58): >:( My 3rd top 60 gone too soon. A personal top 5 and a strong Beatle-esque offering from Paul. Wish it had been a tad higher.
Time to see at least one diva gone at this point...

Did not expect to see the Thompson Twins out now after how Hold Me Now did on the previous rankdown.
There's a few songs I'm surprised are still in, but at the top of that is Sussudio. Pleasantly, but still very surprised. I ranked it higher than I would have if we had done this a bit earlier, but I've always thought that the general consensus of it leaned heavily to the negative these days and that it was a guaranteed bottom 20.
Also the double Sting KO reminded me of this.

lThe 80's were amazing, so let's get some extras in here. As always, my top 100 of 1985 looked nothing like Billboard's, so you can consider some of my picks as extras. 100. John Waite - Tears (BB #37) (DOC #15)From "No Brakes" album. Terrible quality video. Even for youtube standards. www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMr2QSNvD3A99. John Parr - Naughy Naughty (BB #23) (DOC #18)Actually the first single before "St Elmo's Fire". A cool Billy Squier like rocker. Jon Parr really looked like a "Wise Guy" www.youtube.com/watch?v=syhrz_AMLQU98. Roman Holliday - One Foot Back In Your Door (BB #76) (DOC# 15)Uptempo bop. This song was on the "Teachers" soundtrack. Great quality video. 93. Animotion - Let Him Go (BB #39) (DOC #12)Second single following success of "Obsession" which barley dented the Top 40, but I love it. It had an 80's Latin High Energy vibe to it. A couple more extras that missed both Billboard's ,and my top 100, but still good songs.Nolan Thomas - Yo' Little Brother (BB #57) (DOC #34)This is a great 80's music video. This could quite possible be the first Freestyle song ever? You can hear TKA and Stevie B. vibes all over it. The characters in the MV are supposed to be , Billy Idol, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi lauper, and my favorite Ric Ocasek from The Cars. Scandal - Beat Of The Heart (BB #41) (DOC #27)Third single off " Warrior" L.P. 90. Bronski Beat - Why (UK #4) (DOC #11)Did nothing on Us Billboard but got a #4 peak in The UK. Very uptempo synthpop song 89. Bryan Adams - One Night Love Affair (BB #13) (DOC #9)Bryan Adams was allover my charts in 1985. This was the fifth single off the massive "Reckless" album. Universal is a dick when it comes to youtube so no MV. 87. Night Ranger - Four In The Morning (BB #19) (DOC #9)Guess you all know I'm a huge Night Ranger fan. 86. Steve Perry - Foolish Heart (BB #18) (DOC #10)Second single off "Street Talk" Gorgeous AOR Rock ballad that crossed over into my 1985 charts. 83. New Edition - Mr. Telephone Man (BB #12) (DOC #8) This was the single that followed the one we just covered tonight. Very melodic R&B ballad. I wasn't as thrilled with Bell Biv Devo, but I followed Bobby Brown way into his solo albums. Too bad he was such an ass with Whitney. 81. Krokus - Our Love (BB N/A) (DOC #7)I love screaming along to 80's Metal. 'nuff said. A couple more extras that missed the cut on the year end charts, but still great songs.Rick Springfield - Celebrate Youth (BB #26) (DOC #22)From Rick's 1985 "Tao" LP. This album had some great songs with a bit harder edge than his usual Pop rock song, but also with some New Wave influences. This one just missed my top 100 of 1985. Nik Kershaw - The Riddle (UK #3) (DOC #37)Off his album with the same name, Nik was huge in the UK. This song went all the way top 3 in The UK. I think the song featured bagpipes or flutes. Anyway it sounded great to me. YAY!!! Love that you're posting more 80s music like in the 1984 RD :) Out of those, I had only heard: - Let Him Go: YES, this one was a personal top 20 following the bigger hit Obsession. I'm always up for Latin-vibed songs, but but I don't find the Latin connection here (??!!). Are you sure you're not confused with Let It Go? - Beat of the Heart: I was a fan of Scandal since Goodbye to You, one of my favorite 1980s band songs (and one of the favorite 1980s songs back home), and I liked every single I heard of them, although this one was below GTY, Warrior, Hands Tied, and Love's Got a Line on You (which had Jon Bon Jovi!). - One Night Love Affair: This one entered my chart together with Run To You. None was that popular back home, so it barely reached my top 15, although in the early 1990s when my brother bought Restless and I bought So Far So Good, I appreciated both songs much more. - Foolish Heart: DIdn't enter my personal chart, as I don't even recall hearing it on radio. I definitely heard it more in the 1990s when listening to Casey's Countdown :) not a super fan anyway, just an ok song for me, although I do like Steve's voice a lot. - Mr. Telephone Man: Managed to scrap my personal top 10 but with little longevity in my chart. I do like the 80s groove for this cover enough, and to be honest it's a song that in the long term ended up having lots of longevity, as in I never forgot the song... - The Riddle: I discovered this one in he early 2000s and liked it quite a bit -Nik's voice reminded me of Level 42's... Regarding other songs: - That Roman Holiday song made me think of some 1980s Def Leppard, ha! - Love that Nolan Thomas video! With the kids dressing up like 1980s icons lol Cool! - The main synth sound at the beginning of Why? and throughout the song actually reminded me of Q-Feel's Dancing in Heaven. I'll download it :) It sounds more Communards than Bronski. Good one!

90. We Are The World (2): OMG! OMG!!! OMG!!!!! What happened here? WOW!! I didn't know this was so hated. This was such a HUGE event of a song, like THE event song back in the day. Plus a huge hit back home, and as a kid I was just mesmerized at seeing so many huge artists joining forces. I remember watching the video multiple times, even recording it in VHS. Later that year, my school class made a casting to recreate this, and I got the Bruce Springsteen and Kim Carnes parts :) (hoarse voice at 10 lol) So this has LOTS of sentimental value to me. But not only that. I genuinely like the melody, and the possibility of listening bits of different artists with their own personalities like Tina, Cyndi, Stevie, Michael, Steve, etc. This was my longest running chart topper for many years, until Meat Loaf's I'd Do Anything For Love... And amongst my favorite of the 1980s. And yeah, I'd put Do They Know It's Christmas as another favorite of the 1980s, although I discovered that one a bit too late to have it enter my personal chart. Very, very negatively surprised at this one :'( 89. Who's Holding Donna Now (74): This was a personal top 10. I like the smooth groove of the verses more than the chorus, but it's a nice R&B song overall. 88. I Can't Hold Back (82): This is one of those 'chorus songs' to me, where I really like the chorus but the verses are too meh for me, so I didn't make it enter my personal chart. 87. Missing You - Diana Ross (70): Very nice tune, and Diana sounds lovely. Maybe a bit too sugary, but I admit I under-ranked this one a bit. It didn't enter my personal chart, as I only discovered it in the 1990s. 86. Never Surrender (83): Another 'chorus song' for me, and the way he pronounces some words made me like it less than Survivor's lol. Didn't make it to my personal chart either. 85. Valotte (75): I liked the classic sound of this one. 84. Suddenly (72): A personal top 10, that I still like sappy and all. He has a very nice tone, and that bridge elevated the song a bit too. 83. Miami Vice Theme (80): VERY symbolic song of the decade, but I just wish it were a bit more dynamic. It gets a bit samey samey after a minute. My favorite pop instrumental of 1984-85 was Herbie Hancock's Rock It: a personal #1 :) 82. Cool It Now (52): Everything was going better after that letdown of #90, and now this... CIN is cute and fun!! Yes, the kids sound a bit distorted at moments, but they also do some good harmonies here and there. Love the sound, melody, especially of the pre-chorus, the little rap, and those claps that were so 80s! A personal #1 gone :( 81. Too Late For Goodbyes (87): I always cringe at his "YYYYY"es in the verses. That alone annoyed me...
