I never ever want to hear this piece of garbage again. That it won Grammys over Fast Car is incomprehensible. Also that it won Best Male Pop Vocal Performance over "Father Figure." Tragic.

I know the Grammys aren't really the be all, end all, but...it won Song of the Year? REALLY? And it beat out "Fast Car" AND "Giving You the Best That I Got"? What on earth were they smoking in the late 80's?

What on earth were they smoking in the late 80's? The same thing they’re smoking now? Pretty much given that they recognized a year spearheaded by Black Intelligence by giving AOTY to this decade's equivalent of Can't Slow Down... DLR was a pioneering frontman for the 80s, but his solo career was something else.

The Jets' entire forgettable career served the sole purpose of making this possible, and for it I am grateful:

I didn't realize Don't Worry, Be Happy was so hated now, I thought it was more so just forgotten. I have no problem with its early exit though as I'm likely going to forget it again as soon as I hit 'create post.' Also that it won Best Male Pop Vocal Performance over "Father Figure." Tragic. I know the Grammys aren't really the be all, end all, but...it won Song of the Year? REALLY? And it beat out "Fast Car" AND "Giving You the Best That I Got"? What on earth were they smoking in the late 80's? And Man In the Mirror in ROTY. But George won AOTY that year and Tracy Chapman won BNA. Not that Bobby really had any business winning any majors, but no one got outright robbed (except for MJ maybe, but Bad was seen as a moderate 'disappointment' coming after Thriller so at the time probably no one felt that way about it.) 1988 was just one of those spread-the-love kind of years, and Bobby was a jazz musician so he was a shoo-in b/c that's exactly the genre Grammys voters liked to reward whenever they got the rare chance. Quincy Jones, Natalie Cole, Herbie Hancock. Bobby just sticks out b/c DWBH was such an obvious one-off.

Even Phil Collins doesn't like A Groovy Kind Of Love these days.
The other #1 he had from Buster was much better.
Richard Marx had all of his entries be higher than I thought for me because of me liking a lot of songs even less, but this was the lowest ranked for me too.

That probably doesn't bode well for the other Richard Marx songs (which I ranked higher) either.
Richard wrote an entire album about side p***y though. That's gotta count for something, right?

My soul just wouldn't let me snub him from top 10, not even with A Groovy Kind of Love. Yeah, he took a super cheesy song from the 60s and added twice the mozzarella by turning it into a starry-eyed ballad, but dangit it's just pretty. It shouldn't be played outside of wedding receptions, is all.

I had to boost Information Society because I know you all tanked it. I’ll make a crazy prediction: WOYM(PE) goes Top20 in this rankdown

Kinda funny, this blocked Pour Some Sugar On Me for the #1 spot.
Now where the hell is Samantha Fox?

I'm surprised to see "Wait" out this early. I know it's not one of the better hair metal songs of the era but I thought it would at least make the top 80.

How can you want an absolute banger like Naughty Girls out before disposing of the schlocky ballads and hair metal? Makes no sense!
Before now, I've controlled the impulse to tank songs which I know are not objectively worse than others. But songs like Don't Worry, Be Happy and, for that matter, I Can See Clearly Now represent a kind of covert satanic evil that must be routed from this Earth.
Richard Marx is married to Daisy Fuentes. I don't know what else to do with that piece of information but share it with you guys.
We did Brenda Kmart dirty, I see. One of the better "freestyle ballads."

That Groovy Kind of Love cover art is atrocious. Somebody should do a rankdown of cover arts.

I would sincerely hope we don't screw over 'Hazard' by Richard Marx when we get to 1992. I can kinda sorta see why his songs haven't fared that well so far but 'Hazard' does not deserve a trash performance.

These reveals are really weird. Some are right, but some are flat out WTF? #100. I Don't Wanna Live Without Your Love - ChicagoOne of the least memorable Chicago songs ever, but bottom 10. #99. Could've Been - TiffanyTiffany Puts to shame most of today's pop vocalists. First off. No Autotune needed. This is such a beautiful ballad. #98. Wait - White LionMakes no sense at all to put White Lion in the bottom 10. Other than to piss me off. 8D This was straight out flawless melodic Glam Rock. The Good looking "White" glam bands were considerably less Sleazey than their raunchy, counterparts, but I could dig both White Lion and Megadeth at the same level. This one was basically a glam rock love song. Love the lyrics in this one. Mike Tramp had some killer stage charisma. Also one of the nicest guys in Rock scene. White Lion decided to call it quits once Nirvana came along and ruined the Rock N Roll party for everyone. Obviuosly you guys wanna ruin it for me too. #97. One Good Woman - Peter CeteraI don't know who convinced Peter Cetera and Chicago to slip up, but neither were any good on their own. #96. Don't Worry, Be Happy - Bobby McFerrinLosing my #100 early on is a great sign. Always hated this song. Seemed more like theme music to a Fat Albert or Globe Trotters cartoon. #95. I Still Believe - Brenda K. StarrBrenda released a couple of good Dance Pop songs written by Jellybean Benetiz. "What You See Is What You Get" was hot, but I never cared for this particular ballad. later she went on to sing Spanish music. #94. J ust Like Paradise - David Lee RothWon't shed any tears for this one. I Love Diamond Dave, but this one wasn't as clever as his past hits with Van Halen. The one I liked was called "Stand Up" #93. Make It Real - The JetsI hate it when you all shit on beautiful pop ballads like this. and its not the first time you all dump on the Jets #92. A Groovy Kind Of Love - Phil Collins Phil Collins tanks with one of his best ballads. Wasn't cause of me. #91. Hold On To The Nights - Richard MarxI liked one Richard Marx song, and this wasn't it.

As tradition goes, here commences my own personal Top 100 of 1988. This year was very diverse for me. I charted Glam rock (duh), Pop, Dancepop, Alt, Freestyle and H- Energy club music. Blame it on the fact that I had a tower records around the corner. I'll leave some clues to the missing numbers which I will reveal as soon as they show up on this rank down. 100. R.E.M. - It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) (BB Hot 100 #69) (DOC #20)This was the one that opened up the charts for me to start charting this band. Very upbeat and bouncy. "Orange Crush", "Stand", "Losing My Religion"and "Shiny Happy People" (My Favorite) all followed. 99. Winger - Madalain (BB Hot Mainstream Rocl Tracks #27) (DOC #17)Before Massive hits like "Seventeen", and "Headed For A Hearbreak" , Kip Winger set the Airwaves on Fire with the first single off their debut album. 98. ? (BB Hot 100 #7) (DOC #12)97. ? (BB Hot 100 #3) (DOC #21)
96. Pretty Poison - When I Look Into Your Eyes (BB Hot 100 N/A) (DOC #21)The first thing you notice about Pretty Poison is that they resemble a Glam Rock band. They were actually a Dance Pop band leaning towards Latin Freestyle, who started out as a New Wave NRG band in the early 80's. This was the third release off their 1988 album 'Catch Me I'm Falling". The thing I loved about Latin Freestyle is that it always featured that Guitar solo. Much like the one you would run into in a Glam Rock song.
95. Clime Fisher - Love Changes Everything (BB Hot 100 #16) (DOC #9)British Sophisti Pop duo originally wanted Rod Stewart to sing this, but things didn't work out and they released it themselves. It turns out to be their biggest hit. If you listen to it, it sounds a lot like something Rod Stewart would have released back then. 94. Elisa Fiorillo - How Can I Forget You (BB Hot 100 #60) (DOC #14)Elisa was another discovery from Producer/song Writer Jellybean Benitiz. Jellybean was responsible for producing many hits for the 80's icons. Including Michael Jackson and Madonna. "How Can I Forget You" was Elisa's second hit in the U.S. The style? 80's Madonna Dance pop. 93. Whitesnake - Give Me All Your Love (BB HOT 100 #48) (DOC #17)No introduction needed for this band. They are the guys that got Tawny Kitaen to dance on their car. "Give Me All Your Love" was the 5th single of the 'Whitesnake" L.P. 92. George Michael - Hand To Mouth (BB HOT 100 N/A) (DOC #16)Here is were my George Michael singles for 1988 start showing up, so you can only guess how high the rest are? "Hand To Mouth" was never an actual single, but got a lot of airplay on KPWR also known as POWER 106 F.M. 91. Scarlett & Black - You Don't Know (BB HOT 100 #20) (DOC #14)Sophisti Pop male female duo from the U.K. who found minor success on the music charts. This is one of those bands that fall into the One-hit Wonder category. Even to this day, this song sounds great to me.

Honestly this year was pretty boring to me. I’d only go back and listen to my top 30. The rest of the songs are mostly just forgettable ballads. I don’t have a disdain for most of these songs. I just forgot about most of them a bit after I heard them.
